I love this game. I don't think I'm quitting it any time soon.
What kind of changes in the game would make you quit it? Either from a new patch or a whole new expansion.

Making it completely like WoW. There's a reason I'm here playing 14 instead.
i am already ready to quit.
what keeps me here is the lack of a good alternative. especially since i am a console player. so when a new awesome MMO releases on console i'll quit. but it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon...
I don't think I'll ever fully quit, but if they continue to ignore community feedback I might go back into the extended hiatus I was in for most of 4.1-4.2.
What NewAgeDoom said + if the lore team starts lacking care in story consistency in blatant manner (still something happening on wow btw)
If they continue the same predictable formula for ALL of their remaining expansions. I love the game and all, but the repetitive stale formula in this game is beyond annoying. If I don't quit, then, like Enla suggested, I would take a extended hiatus from the game.
If it went completely free-to-play probably, I'd see no point in continuing any longer. The quality would quickly shift downhill.
I’d they went free to play and the cost of the now extra stuff it takes to play how I’ve been playing exceeds $20
I'm very petty and there's a lot of minor gripes that could disinterest me.
My main problem is that the game just feels way too "safe" I guess. While it is nice to know when content is coming, it does start to get a little dull when it's the same thing every time. If 5.0 comes out and it follows the same formula (6 areas, 2 jobs, another "human with animal ears" race if we get one, etc.) I might have to dip out for a bit before I get completely bored with the whole thing.
Then again I did recently buy a medium so I'm now kind of forced to play.
I already did.
The announcement of freemium app and medicore expansion SB has been so far.
I still have sub days left so I can still post here.
Will probably check out the next expansion next year but if it's the same ol stuff with 90% put in mogstation instead of ingame reward It won't take long until I remove it again.
If it ever becomes F2P then I will never ever touch it again. I do not play F2P games, I used to play RIFT, I quit the day they made it F2P and never looked back.
I quit GW2 too, although you have to pay for the expansions to enter those areas the core of the game became F2P so I removed that too.
I still play wow after 12 years and I still have fun with it so that's good and that has even less change of going F2P compared to this considering how much more players they have over 4 times as much.
I'm currently playing Bless Online NA/EU version, while the gameplay is fun I'm actually having doubts due the poor translation and considering how much people have issues with the game running properly..
Anyway same rule here if it ever becomes F2P I'll remove it.
I love the game, but I would have to say that the micro transaction that I genuinely feel forced to pay in order to get full enjoyment of an expansion or update will be their last attempt to get me to pay for anything, including my subscription. I don’t honestly mind the optional stuff, and as long as it’s reasonably affordable and completely optional, I have no concerns about buying it if I happen to want it. But I don’t need it. The moment it ceases to feel optional though... i’m just not the person who wants to pay for a product that turns out incomplete, then be forced to fix the problem myself by paying even more to the offending company. Just my preference.
This. Free2Play junk like gachapon/lootboxes and P2W micro-transactions make games into "highly profitable, contentless voids". Japanese developers even know this is a thing because they shutdown 100's of mobile games every year that have that mechanic, once they empty the wallets of the whales. They then come out with a nearly identical game to make them start paying again.

Ummm, I guess I'd consider quitting if the game started being too unfriendly, like... getting equip became super hard and dependant on luck, or if they stopped releasing cool glamour items ingame and everything became cash-shop...
Basically, all the things this game doesn't do. I guess I'm staying for a long ride!
If the subscription price surpassed my personal max of $19 a month.
Brainless content being prioritized.
If they basically continue the same story/quest formulas. Like, I was really pleased with how they incoming spoilerWhich I found was surprisingly new for them to do. I expected it "if this was a regular game and not an MMO, X would totally be happening right now /begrudges the fact that FFXIV is an MMO for 3 seconds... then sparkles at the surprise/." I would like to continue to see "new" approaches like that. I was also pleased to see we got to make more choices in SB, and little things like our classes were acknowledged by NPCs.let us play as Alphinaud in the latest patch
Otherwise, it seems like SE is getting cosy how things are currently done because it's been successful up to a point and I think if it was the same gimmicks every time, I'd grow tired of it and quit. It's kinda like an artist drawing the same things the same way without ever improving themselves because they know X is received well (in general), so they get content and hit a plateau. However, I can tell that SE is trying to explore/experiment a little at a time while playing it safe, so I'm okay with that.
Other things that would drive me crazy: bad directing, IC inconsistency (I find Thancred a bit inconsistent between ARR and HW+, and Yda also fell out of character in HW [you could call it char development, but I found it really... poor in general]), no fulfilling sidequests to serve as relief from tragic MSQ, so many deaths so little time (at this point I just don't care if a character dies).
Start rant/ramble xD: and this wasn't enough to make me quit, but I really dislike the lack of variation in accents among the characters now. Like, in ARR (while fantasy/pseudo accents(I think)), Raubahn, Seedseer, Merlwyb, Alphinaud, etc., all had different accents and speech patterns from each other and I kind of imagined it to be a cultural thing. Now, the main cast has roughly the same or too-similar accents, and almost everyone has same/similar speech patterns regardless of character or origin (e.g. everyone says "you and yours" at some point, and while it's to display antiquity, it's a bit tiring. The same thing can be said various ways, you know?). It just really annoyed me that we went from a potluck of various fantasy accents to all UK accents from ARR to HW. Like, I get Ishgard being primarily UK accents, but Ul'dah, Ala Mhigo, and Gridania should have different accents, you know? I was relieved that Hien and other Doma characters did have slightly different accents (despite similar speech patterns and UK accent under tones) to reflect their different culture/area.
Edit: I totally prefer Raubahn's current VA over the ARR one (the ARR one, at least in the very beginning, was terrible), so, it wasn't all bad.
Edit 2: someone made a really good point: if the prices go up, I won't be able to afford it. Or rather, I won't want to afford it. My gym membership is cheaper (at $10 a month with contract), which you'd expect it to not be in this day and age... I'd rather save up sub money for more solo games if prices went up. I probably wouldn't go to another MMO as I tried 'em and didn't like 'em as much as I like this one.
It's gotten to a point where I no longer have interest in any new coming content. Every new patch is just like every new patch from 2.0 on, and I don't even look at what's gonna have. Like, it's not new anymore, per se. More of the same, over, and over, and over again. I'd be genuinely more interested if all a patch brought was a very extended MSQ, and nothing else. I don't even want any new dungeons, there's nothing I'm expecting anymore. I came back to try 4.3, and I barely log on. I don't even care about Ridorana's weekly, or any for that matter.
If the game went F2P and starting locking everything behind paywalls such as quests for zones, gil cap, xp cap per day, etc... For F2P games I don't mind cosmetic items or boosters, but not a big fan of basic gameplay elements being gated.
Or if for any reason Yoshi P went completely mad and made the game into open world free for all PvP.
If it went free to play. Becuase I know they wouldn't be keeping up the quality if they did that. and I can't spend that much money. (I spend WAY more on F2P games than P2P)
Final Fantasy XVII Online A Realm Remixed HD bloodstromed 4K VR 012/2 Days
I'm kinda ready to move on to the next MMO Square decides to throw at us. Hopefully this time there will be less things holding back the game. I will still follow the story of XIV as long as it remains interesting however.
I'm pretty much at that point now. I've been playing Elder Scrolls Online for the most part since the free to play trial week in March only coming back here to do the new content and reset my housing timer. I was planning to sell my materials, pack up my household items and drop my sub after the last 4.x was released. The only thing holding me back now is ESO added spyware to their client this last maintenance cycle so I might be back to looking for a new game if we aren't allowed to opt out.
I always figured I’d quit the day people started running around with wings on..... I’m still here though so I don’t know. Maybe this game is just a bad habit I need to kick.
Every so often players complain about this game missing features that WoW has. Some would fit in well but others would require the game to become unrecognisable to accommodate them and they just make me internally groan.
I left WoW behind for a very long list of reasons. If XIV became like WoW I'd leave.
Increased frequency of lag spikes due to NTT's server jumps.
Increased reliance upon the MogStation items and gaudiness of their items.
Further bandaid fixes that will later be considered by the devs as "good enough" over sunk-cost fallacies, despite that they'd have held a better efficiency to have just done a complete job in the first place.
Or the game continuing to reveal little or have little by way of future design goals, or failing to bring in features in fitting applications (to seem complete and attractive in themselves) that each work towards those goals.
(...Honestly, I'm hanging onto this game by only a thread atm, and have already cancelled my sub to wait until the next Savage tier. But if it shows little improvement, it'll likely be until next expansion, if ever.)
If they copy and paste another hw type expansion
Lootboxes!
Padalji added as a playable race
If they increase the difficulty in casual content much more. I'm not really seeing a lot of fun or joking in the new trial or raid, more like relief that it's done.
PvP becoming the main focus of the game (in other words, PvE content virtually abolished or at least cut back to insignificance).
Really though, the game being put to pasture due to it's age and it's story wound up like FFXI has would probably be when I move on (after I completed all the storyline of course).
If the game went F2P or introduced a paid feature which is mandatory for me to enjoy the game.
If flying or swimming was discontinued. I already left WoW partially for this reason, so don't think I can't do it again.
Being forced to PvP to progress in PvE.
A noticeable drop in quality or quantity of free in game cosmetic stuff.
Overuse of RNG as a method to increase content longevity. All Greed is an example of this because they could have implemented generic Leg/Gloves/Boots/Chest tokens instead if the goal was to improve people's ability to gear alts.
If they make the game too heavy for my potato PC. A game this old is not worth what upgrading would cost.
Gamer unfriendly decisions like deleting old content (like WoW's legendary quest) or making our options more limited for no apparent reason.
If SE keeps doing what they're doing, my time will come. The only reason I haven't yet is because it's a mindless activity to share with my girlfriend; when her interest wanes, I'm out for good unless SE has course-corrected, demonstrated that 'server limitations' are a thing of the past, and determined that standard content isn't going to cater to the lowest common denominator.
- No new race in 5.0
- No new healer in 5.0
- Astrologian gets butchered. I worked so hard on my relic steps for 3.0, and I’m doing the same in 4.0. I swear if it gets ruined someday, I will be so soar.
I'm constantly teetering at the edge to be honest, I often take lengthy breaks and play some other stuff. FFXIV does not keep my attention for very long at all anymore.
waiting. and waiting, and waiting. Log in, queue for expert roulette, 30 mins later no pop, log out. Impossible to get into diadem. Getting tired of it.
Any other new/better MMO to be honest. The only reason I'm still playing this game is because I've played 10+ years of WoW and there simply isn't anything better on the market right now. So as soon as we get a new one that looks promising I'm gone and I'll never look back to this...atrocity.
-Terrible/outdated UI, barely any customization
-stale game design
-slow combat
-forums that look like they were made in 2001
-terrible ingame and website support
-too much blatant cash grabbing (mogstation, extra retainers for money instead of expansion via ingame currency, freemium garbage, etc.)
The only good points this game has imho are the storytelling and the somewhat decent housing(if you're able to get a house that is).
If it become pay to win, if the game becomes too easy (a bit of challenge, I don't want brainless content), if the mog station has all the nice glamours for an extra sub fee every week...
No, no. vBulletin 4.1.3 was released in 2011. They remain the same ever since.
Really, the reason anyone is playing FFXIV is that it's the only Asian MMO to not adopt the shakedown-to-progress gachapon model. All these new MMORPG's last, at most 3 months and then their North American publishers throw in the towel and let them rot. Here's a summary from a youtuber https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV48C6yzfFY
If FFXIV moves anymore towards the F2P P2W model, I'm done. MMORPG's are a lost cause, and you kids these days have no idea that while the "cosmetic cash shop" has been around for like 20 years, the various gachapon models the asian developers keep finding new ways of "it's not gambling" excuse it. Yet where is the actual gameplay? You can't tell me that players login to the game just to pay to play these awful gachapon RNG games in a contest to see who can out spend the other idiots.
When they push the "optional" extras too far, if my friends stop playing, or if a better MMO comes out.
Despite all the little things I dislike, FFXIV remains a pretty good game.
I periodically quit FFXIV haha most of the time it did not have content to make me stick with it so I play other games waiting for a patch and a week or two of play in Eorzea and I'm done.
