You mean that you can interact with? Because some areas do have endemic life, usually in the shape of birds flying around.
Yeah, the most I've seen is a few birds but it's not very noticeable, and they're usually flying really high over the zone, I mostly notice the shadow if anything. It's nice during little ladies day when there's the little bird dolls in the cities. We just need that, but more, and everywhere! :D
Don't forget the lone shark roaming the Ruby Sea.
With all the aggressive monsters around, would you want to be a small wildlife critter scampering around while everything is looking for anything to smash?
Maybe the minions are the fauna of the game and we slave them after free them from the chest/rocks/etc where they where in eternal sleep.
I miss when the mob AI was more interesting and the aldgoats would follow you around, oh the good old days! But yes this games lacks a lot of NPC interactiveness which is a shame.
I would love more little critters like birds, snakes and animals like that and I would love to have more passive monsters/animals. Its completely strange to have all those herbivores aggroing on you as soon as they see you..and have all those bad monsters going/flying around camps. How exactly is anyone still alive there? (They cant really fight unlike us)
The eccosystem is not really believeable imo. Too many aggressive animals and way too less normal ones. It would be cool to see young ones too and have their parents protect them if you go near them. Or let monsters be harmless until you go near their nests or attack one of them, then a herd could follow you.
Or maybe have passive monsters that love to run away from fights so you need to stun/sleep them or kill them fast.
A cat roaming around isn't going to make me go out more.
I'm just standing in one of the major cities (apart from Limsa Lominsa, I avoid that RP plaughed location), and just spam my roulette. The only time I'll go out again is when they release the new expansion and that will just be untill lvl cap and then just stand there spamming roulettes again.
I'd rather have them to spend more time on you know content that matters? (for me at least I guess).
Oh and you know ... #serverlimitations.
Not all ideas are for everyone. They obviously care as much about non-battle content as they do raids and dungeons, they're always adding new aesthetics to the game, such as glamour, hair styles, mounts and pets, etc. It would be nice if they do the same for the game's environment :D
As long as the blood thirsty guards to places can't harm them I'm all for it.
Bring on the ambient creatures! I was actually thinking about this the other day when I was playing one of my other games. I'm so used to seeing peaceful creatures in games - either in the form of "white name" animals which are just there for the environment, or peaceful EXP animals which don't aggro you on sight.
I'd like more ambience in general tbh, wildlife, people, and sounds etc. If you switch off the background music this game is really quiet. It'd be nice if they made the game a bit more immersive.
Aside from the school of fish, sharks, and birds mentioned I'm fairly certain I've seen butterflies somewhere....or maybe that was fortnite? Can't remember at this time lol, but yes I do agree with this.
Eureka has a bunch of butterflies in some places during fair weather
I am pretty sure that I saw snakes in Shroud but I am not sure
In the early parts of the game there *are* a lot of creatures that don't attack you on sight. It's one of the things that annoys me about the expansions - everything now wants to kill you, no exceptions but sprites.
Dialogue mentions that dodos are kept as domesticated birds, chickens exist (though we don't seem to see them much, there's Enkidu and you can buy chicken eggs), aldgoats and buffalo are apparently kept for milk, and the Red Rooster Stead also has sheep.
Dogs definitely exist, going from the last Heavensturn event.
There was also a passing mention in the lorebook of someone having a pet cat, but I can't find it now.
Anyway, the game could definitely do with more 'NPC animals' around.
Could be (but I myself never saw one) but the ARR were a bit better anyway, since they had passive animals. Now its just: well this little bug also wants to kill you. Its getting less believable.
The ruby sea is really depressing, especially after the great scene in the benchmark trailer. Now barely any fish swim there and it just feels so liveless.
That's something that annoyed me a lot. I was actually looking forward to the swimming and underwater stuff but then there's barley fish and tbh not much to do.
They hyped that underwater stuff up so much before SB launch in all those streams and such and now it's been months I've been underwater ... there's just not anything to do aside from the very few MSQ you had to do in there.
One of the reasons I play FF over something like WoW is the fact they do care about the game environmental detail and atmosphere, night, day, weather and all that. I'd rather they added more instead of an extra dungeon for the roulette grind. That's just me though, different people enjoy different things.
That said, even WoW is packed with critters and wildlife, the server limitation excuse for absolutely any interesting change or QoL in the game gets a bit lame when most other MMO's on the market manage these things fine.
"WoW is packed with critters and wildlife"
And this has been the case since 2004. I see no reason why XIV shouldn't have this.

1.0 had frogs.
Hell, I'd love to see NPCs that move around some, too, rather than standing still 24/7. It's always unnerving to go to a city in the dead of Eorzean night and see it just as populated as it is during the day. I realize for quest-specific NPCs this might not be worth the effort, but can't we see the non-critical ones wandering around in accordance with the clock?
Edit / Addition: 5 gil says that if SE ever introduces flora and fauna packs, they're classified as 'bonus content' and sold on the Mog Station next to the HD texture packs people keep asking for.
There's not even any animals in the Royal Menagerie! I thought we rescued Ala Mihgo, repopulate the castle with some gardeners and animal carers, and fill it with wildlife and non-aggressive mobs :D
That's a good idea, though I'd prefer that we can't attack them like mobs.
They could also add animals that we could pat and play with in towns. Make them react differently to different emotes, and maybe even add an achievement involving seeking out and interacting with these animals!
Aw that would be cute. Like some dogs running around, barking at you. I love that in Mhor Dona you can sometimes see a carbuncle going around. Having more of that with animals (just use the minions for the look) would make it feel more alive. And if NPCs are having different routes with different times would bring it to life even more.
Rift has those critters too. I believe they even help when a rift opens and they are near. But its just soo much better if you walk around and have some random animals that dont attack you.
Just no cats. Any game that has cats make so many people get distracted they stop doing what they were doing before they saw the cat(s) and had to go over and pet them. I personally wave at the piggies in Xelphatol any time I get that for roulette. I do love cats just I'm worried I'll get someone dead because I'll have become distracted by a cute cat while on my whm.
It makes me happy to see so many people liking and agreeing with this idea. I just hope that if they do listen, that they add them to existing zones and not just new zones in the 5.0 expansion ♥
