They are actual weapons :p

Although most of them are just knuckle wrap based weapons just with a different name. Also can't blame them for it, PUGs originally just a boxer. So range extension weapons wasn't considered, just extensions of the fist weapons.

I think the issue with the way hand-to-hand weapons look is merely an issue of size. If they shrunk it down to actually form-fit to the hand, it would make a bit more sense. That said, I seem to recall something like this asked about hand-to-hand weapons in FFXI many years ago. I think the logic went something like this: "The hand-to-hand weapons have an exaggerated size so the players are able to see them more easily." This is probably why you don't see things like brass knuckles, since there would be barely anything to show.
As for the other weapons mentioned, they would have to make a whole new set of animations for everything, and then people would ask "Why doesn't such-and-such class/job get a different weapon type too?!" If they had the time and resources to spare, however, I agree that it would be cool.

I agree, but I don't think it's worth scrapping files that exist already.
Claws are found throughout FF as the Monk weapon of choice: From FF6 to FF11 to FFTA2. True, I think they're more of a ninja weapon if anything, but they've always been in the series as a Monk weapon and I think SE wants to sustain tradition with XIV.
Monk gets Nunchaku in FF1, but they're pretty useless compared to barehanded fighting. Also, FF11 devs could have made glove-like weapons for MNK just as well as FF7 and FF8. If you've played these, you'd know that Tifa and Zell both had gloves that change, instead of gaudy range-extenders. Most of the gloves have metal attached to the knuckles, and Tifa even has a pair with claw extenders.
One thing SE should do is add more weapon types per class. CNJ and THM are the only classes with more than one weapon type, and there's little point to having a shield on either. When I use a Wand of Tremors on my CNJ, I wear a Dated Decorated Buckler for just that: decoration. Conjurer is all I have, but that doesn't mean I think it's fair DoM to have an extra degree of character variance more than DoW.
GLA should be allowed Great Swords (Defender is a common GSword name), WAR should be allowed one-handed axes, ARC could have different size bows depending on the situation (near or far or something) or use instruments FFTA2-style for blunt damage, and of course PGL should have something like Nunchaku, since I think XIV has the graphical capacity for swinging weapons. For that matter, CNJ and THM could benefit from slightly better melee weapons, like Hammers and Flails.
Personally I think it can all wait until SE has everything else figured out, but that won't keep me from wanting it!
Nunchuck can be cool though
monk vs samurai
ok so its soul calibur, but you get the idea.
I wouldn't mind seeing Monk with various Weapons (ass all jobs/classes having one ex weapon, but being able to use other weapons) but I think they're going to keep it H2H as Pugilist is also H2H.
But we'll see when at the end of the Month, we will see.
They say jobs are not weapon exclusive, but for now did not have plans to add crafted job weapons. Maybe later down the rode you can choose what kind of monk you want to be and certain weapons do certain things. Would like to see other martial arts weapons other than the current pugilist set up. But please no nunchaku :[
I want one of each of the TMNT weapons so at any given moment I can relive my childhood as the turtle of my choice.
I agree with this and have agreed with it since the game came out.
PGL/MNK weapons, IMO, should be smaller and actually attached to/on the hands as opposed to handheld things. Basically, overwrite gloves or put them on top of gloves.
Random and kinda off-topic but I kinda wish people would stop considering only Hand-to-Hand fighters as martial artists. My Sword'n'Board warrior or Axe-holding oaf is every bit a martial artist as the Monk next to me.
As for Monk weapons, yes I'd like to see some properly modeled ones and <Katar> weapons, <YES, please!> ^^ Also, kicking daggers/spikes attached to our shoes now that we be getting kick animations too^^
The main problem I see with the weapons OP is suggesting is the need to have many different animations for each type. Of course i would prefer it if SE stopped being lazy and added 2-3 different weapon types along with animations for each class/job. But I don't see that happening sadly. Here's hoping for v2.0 eh?
Because it was mentioned, lets help educate the world here. Its not nunchuck or numchuck. Is "Nunchaku" ( Nun-cha-kus).
Also known as nunchaku, nunchucks, chucks or chain sticks, originally a farm tool used to harvest rice, it developed into a traditional Okinawan weapon and consists of two sticks connected at their ends with a short chain or rope.During the Japanese occupation of Okinawa some 350 years ago, invading warlords prohibited the use of ordinary weapons such as the gun, sword and spear. So, the Okinawans turned to karate and kobu-do, which is the art of karate weapons such as the bo (a staff), sai (a short sword with the two prongs at the handle, kama (a sickle), and surushin, a length of rope with weights attached to both ends) for protection. Some kobu-do weapons were farm implements which the ingenious farmers converted into effective protective devices. For instance, the forerunner of the nunchaku was an instrument used to pound grain, which was later put to practical use as a weapon. The nunchaku was constructed of two hardwood sticks which were securely connected by rope braided from horses' tails. Today, the sticks are tied with rope or chain. Because of is innocent appearance, nunchucks could easily be mistaken for a toy or harmless bundle of sticks. In a defensive situation, however, it could be used to strike, block, hit, twist and pinch.
By all means not a traditional "monk" weapon. Okinawa is not notorious for a history of monks, but farmers. Not to mention, I agree with a previous poster about everyone assuming Hand-to-Hand = Martial arts.
While I think that different martial weapons for MNK would be cool, I feel it's unnecessary
DEFINITION PROVING THIS PERSON CORRECT JUST IN CASE YOU FEEL THE NEED TO IGNORANTLY FLAME
Martial arts are extensive systems of codified practices and traditions of combat that are practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental, physical and spiritual development. The term martial art has become heavily associated with the fighting arts of eastern Asia, but was originally used in regard to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. An English fencing manual of 1639 used the term in reference specifically to the "Science and Art" of swordplay. The term is ultimately derived from Latin, martial arts being the "Arts of Mars," the Roman god of war.[1] Some martial arts are considered 'traditional' and tied to an ethnic, cultural or religious background, while others are modern systems developed either by a founder or an association.
2nd) i feel like 2 people at max said nunchuck, everyone knows nunchaku...but I appreciate the history drop, some people aren't interested in weaponry as you or I, and I'm lazy and can only copy past one definition per day
While I agree it'd be fun to have one other kind of weapon, Bo would make sense to offset the high speed of H2H. People also need to remember while this job is called "Monk", it's Final Fantasy Monk. So while it might be interesting to seem some of these weapons remember that most final fantasy monks use their hands.
I support this thread. I haz suggestion:

You know what would be a great throwback for MNK weapons? Bare knuckles as your best weapon. Not only do the devs get to slack off, but they can legitimately declare that it's a way of calling back to when MNKs and their variants were best when bare knuckled instead of wielding some sort of weapon.
Can we have gloves as weapons? Like Rikku's and Tifa's weapons? pleaaaase ^_^ I want Premium Heart!
Tell me you didnt enjoy SAM with Polerm and Great Katana And spaming sidewinders .... apart from even dreaming of the epic relic bow ... when it used to count ...
Edit: wasnt SAM and RDM the only 2 jobs that could equipe 2 Relics? i used to think about giving my RDM Relic sword And Relic Dagger ... i even think i saw some people do that on a video once but it was a THF maybe i was mistaken
Wait what? How does this relate to PGL/MNK weapons? And PLD and BRD could also equip 2 relics: sword and shield for the first and dagger and horn for the second.
Back on topic, in response to Babydoll, glove slot is already taken as an actual armor slot, so maybe fist coverings as weapons? You would also have to take into consideration how the devs will incorporate new weapon designs in, especially with the variety of gloves you can already wear. Add on the fact that people want to see shinies with their awesome super special new weapons they got, and just having an overlay over your current gloves just wouldn't cut it.
Love, I love "martial arts" misspellings...normally I see "marital arts", so I gotta say this is the first time I've seen "matrial arts"....makes one wonder if there's an art to getting married?

The Greeks were reliably knocking each other about with himantes and sphairai using codified practices long before most of Europe had even decided whether zero was actually a number. The reason gods existed back then was so when you made a sword out of iron over 15 inches long you had someone to pray to, because it was probably going to break like a kit kat on the first thing you swung it at - but you could always punch a guy with something hard wrapped over your knuckles.
Pretty sure they're "actual" martial arts weapons. Pretty sure they're in the martial arts weapons hall of fame right next to the pointed freaking stick.
^^^Excellent point.
Was going to point out that (martial arts != KAH-RAH-TAY), but I went back I saw that several other people had already corrected OP.
I think the current PUG weapons are great, and I have little desire to see any of the suggested weapons in game. As the PUG fights with H2H skill, I think only the katar, and possibly the tonfa are decent representations of H2H. But even then, I much prefer the reinforced fist or claw.
I thought the monks in EQ with their staffs...staves? were cool.
