Heya any other ideas for new tank besides BLU (spits) put those ideas out
The thing with tanks is the offense doesn't really matter. It's the defensive gimmick that give the tank it's flavor because defense is what we do. We get punched in the face and don't fall down.
I keep thinking of City of Heroes tanks.
Invulnerable - basically just strait up damage mitigation
Willpower - becomes more resilient and hits harder the more enemies that are around him.
Dark - life drains and debuffed enemy accuracy
Regeneration - massive health looks and self heals
Ice - slowed enemy dps and hard controls
Fire - passive damage to nearby enemies. This one never made much sense to me.
Super reflex - very difficult to be hot
Earth - I don't remember this one's gimmick
I might be forgetting some. But of those above paladin fits invuln and warrior fits regen. I don't know where dark knight fits in as I'm not overly familiar with its moveset.
So the real question is what kind of tank can fit the other gimmicks or some new gimmick?
FF isn’t really known for its tanks so the pool is rather slim pickings for classic jobs, it’s mostly PLDs and cover tanks. The reason BLU gets brought up a lot is because monsters can have defensive and healing moves they can learn and aggro generation can easily be tacked onto any offensive moves making it an ideal candidate.
Other possibilities?
Rune Knight? Like Celes/FFXI, though as a greatsword wielding magic tank it may hit too close to DRK, unless they retool it, maybe as an evasion tank?
Templar? One handed spear and shield. Not really sure about what it’s gimmick could be. Holy magic would probably hit too close to PLD.
Viking? One handed axe and shield. Could focus more on party wide mitigation than personal mitigation, things like shout to raise party defense and warcry to lower enemy offence.
Beastmaster/puppetmaster? Pet tank, might be a little hard to work with the way pets are designed.
I’d say dancer as an evasion tank, but I’d personally prefer to see it as a melee range healer.
2 gun shields job.

It blocks, it shoots, it shield bashes. Like gunblades only better.
FFXIV's main problem isn't jobs as they have no problem turning a job that is originally a certain role and turning them into another role, same thing happened with DRK. Their problem lies in the weapon pool. The series has a TON of jobs but there's like 6 of them that uses swords, another 6 (hyperbole) that uses staves and like 3 that uses guns.
FFXIV tries to keep all classes distinct when it comes to weapons but it can't be helped that some weapons will share some resemblance (Swords and Greatswords and Katana being all swords), adding even more will give them problems in variety and design. Popular jobs include Spellblade which uses swords so that's gonna be a problem, Blue Mage uses Sabers in some games and swords/daggers in others. Dancer right now has an advantage with being a job with a unique weapon not seen in game yet (Cloth from FFT).
Making Archer become a Bard instead of making Bard its own job and Archer become a Ranger is something I'm sure a portion of them regrets.
I agree especially with the Archer and the Bard. That should have not happened in the first place. For weapons, the FF series still have some to spare, they still can do maces, scythes, whips and nunchaku. Ace from type-0 even uses a deck of cards, which is different from the one AST uses. No idea what weapon can be assigned to a Dancer....
I think combining jobs is a great idea, leads to more variety and less job bloat.
Too many jobs would be just as bad as too few, especially multiple jobs that are too similar to each other.
I imagine a Bard on its own, just like a Dancer who can only dance, would be pretty boring to play. Combining it with Archer, who otherwise would only have basic bow weaponskills, was a perfect match.
Likewise, Time Mage wouldn't work too well on its own considering how OP Slow and Haste would be, yet combining it with Astrologer/Gambler on a healer class has produced something unique that works really well in FFXIV's role system.
As for Swords, I think this has more to do with personal judgement.
You could say Swords, Greatswords and Katana are all 'just swords' but they're not, they're all bladed weapons, and each function completely differently, and are all tied to different classic final fantasy jobs.
It's no different to saying Bows, Crossbows, Guns and Cannons are all 'just firearms'.
I do think we could do without a 'Rune Knight' or 'Spellblade' however, as another one-handed sword would be too similar to Paladin and Red Mage.
So this could be where our job combinations come into play. A Magitek Knight with a Gunblade that uses elemental aspected aether to charge up its weapon. Perhaps it draws this aether from enemies and can utilise utility spells from the Blue Magic spellset.
There we go, Blue Mage, Spellblade and Gunblades, all in one cohesive job concept that's friendly to FFXIV's established lore.
Okay Tank Ideas
Runic Knight Ala Celes it's simple really Sword and Sheild like the Gladiator but with a different set of attacks (I feel a Runic Knight should be a bit more Agile with a guage that builds up from using the runic sword ability then once it's full allows an unleash effect that either does a 180 AoE When Unleashed on Mobs That sends their agro sky high, does a 250 single target when used on boss monsters, or absorbs incoming magic damage and negates it.
Mime basically allow for quarterstaff wielding and have their thing be they mimic the attack of the monsters they fight. I dunno it's a thought okay.
Magitech Knight Gunblades nuff said.
Beastmaster comes to mind. Doubt they'd know how to make a pet job work well enough to make it a tank though.
Copy paste from the other thread:
I'm a huge fan of Chakrams. I don't really want Dancer to be a healer honestly. If I were designing it, I'd probably have Dancer be a melee DPS that uses Chakrams. The idea would be that it's a whirling dervish of dancing death with fast paced mobile combat. Lots of low fast hits and the ability to transition to a ranged form (think opposite of RDM). In that it can use chakrams as ranged weapons for a brief period before returning back to melee. I'd even support it being a "melee version of a BRD/MCH" with some utility attached to it. I draw my inspiritation from a game called C9. It was an niche action MMO, but it had a chakram based class called Erta that was STAGGERINGLY fun to play, even if the game itself was pretty mediocre/bad.
Ideally, DRK should have used scythes instead of great swords. This would have further opened up great sword for a slower more powerful melee DPS job (DRG, NIN, MNK, and SAM are all pretty "fast" jobs).
I think the game may need to shift to allowing jobs to differentiate from roles in the future a la specs, or open new avenues of job customization in the future. It's going to get strange in a few years when the source material dries up and they're forced to create content that stands on its own with no guidance or nostalgia to bolster it. While FF is a massive universe, there is a ton of overlap between them that limits the depth of the pool somewhat.
A few examples could be:
Holy Knight/Swordsman - a la Agrias, Wiegraf, & Orlandu. This "spec" would drop its defensive utilities (HG, Cover, Sentinel, etc.) and pick up more offensive abilities. It would be built off the PLD archetype, but still uses a Sword and Shield and heavy armor and be a DPS.
Chemist - Branches off from MCH and is a healer that uses an elemental pistol. It specializes in "Mix" to craft items that do all kinds of positive and negative effects to be used on the party and enemies.
SAM - could be a tank iteration of the job that specializes in less physical attacks and more "Draw Out" katana effects with blade parries and other defensive utility. Same thing could apply to DRK, a DPS and a tank iteration.
Obviously not all jobs have the ability to "branch out", but it might offer some room to add new jobs or at least differentiate them enough where there aren't a lot of new ideas for jobs.
Alternatively - maybe they go an expansion with no new jobs and focus on revamping a lot of aging systems/code. I'd support that.
I love that idea of a dancer using chakrams.
I think it could easily be the third physical ranged (what else can you use besides arrows and bullets? Boomerang? But thats pretty much a chakram anyway) and specialise in debuffing enemies with dance steps, like songs but quicker with shorter durations, that you weave between gcd weaponskills.
I've always had an idea for a War hammer swinging Magitech "power armor" Tank, Kinda like "Iron Nero"
Besides Blu, I'd like to see rune fencer, gun hammer(Nero's weapon) and beast master(a pet tank would be done poorly in this game, but if they made it where the pet is a side piece to u actually tanking I think I'd work) besides rune fencer they all have unique weapons so at least that is good.
I wonder if they'd finally consider making Machinist and actual Machinist rather than just a Gunner with a spare autoturret if they also had Chemist to consider. The thought actually makes me chuckle at one of the most often given cons for a Chemist job -- that it's essentially a profession, more so than a class. Well, what would a Machinist be if there were engineers in this game? Or heck, if lore/songs were a profession... (Bard)
On the topic of dancers, my own favorite is actually the blades and shawl build, but chakrams would be decent enough as well. It just wouldn't make quite as much sense to make movements which would cancel your momentum if your using a consistent-curvature drag-through-the-cut slicing weapon. Gotta admit, though, that those chakram would stick out -- in an attractive way -- even more than a blades-and-shawl setup would, flashing, twirling... Mmm.
Im in this camp the Nero-esque Magitek Knight type. Also anything that keeps us from getting yet another bladed weapon is a win. Its Hammertime already.
There was a post a long time ago along a similar vein to this.
And for all the tanks with a shield ideas. SE basically said never again to all of them. Much as Axe/Mace/Short Spear and Shield could be cool, were basically only getting 2H or DW from here on out as I doubt theyll make a Wep/Shield as one item class in light of PLD.
I had been thinking about a pet-tank idea where the pet is your mitigation.
Like, the pet is an aura/barrier that while the tank is in tank-stance absorbs some of the damage on on the user and the emnity combo heals your pet a little based on your damage so you can maintain your pet-shield.
The DPS-stance could then increase the pet's damage instead of the user's.
This could work with something like a Beastmaster tank where instead of summoning and/or controlling animals, you are channeling animal spirits.
What if it was a shield only class? Like some sort of Captain America build.
Lol I know that but you missed my point. SE is looking for a new class to add to the series and if that class is a tank, I wonder what kind of ideas there are out there. I personally want a giant fan/war fan user like Temari or Madara from Naruto. It’s Japanese themed and would fit into the SB lore
How about with Beast Master you warg into your Beast and control them that way. Your tank stance is you switching between the beast and yourself.
Well any new classes aren't going to be introduced in Stormblood, they'll be in 5.0, so being 'Japanese themed' doesn't mean anything.
And frankly I think a fan wielding tank sounds rather strange and much less likely to be a tank.
Fan users have typically been dancers or mages.
There's precedence for blue mage being a tank.
let say you kick a animal you have that animal attack you back. let say you kick a puppet that puppet won't anything to you.
puppetmaster is better Job to focus on Migrations tanks where beastmaster be dps short/medium range dps with focus relationship between pets master as well element of taming and find rare pets is best choice for beastmaster
my view in mmorpg is fantasy and reality are linked when one design video games you want a lot element of reality to play in
I rather not give PETE an excuse tried get FFXIV in trouble
Just because they haven't done it yet doesn't mean they can't reuse weapons. Say they wanted to add spellblade(SPB), what's stopping them from using PLD swords? let's say they make it a STR based dps. Just throw a SPB tag onto all PLD swords... done. As long as it's a separate job it can have an entirely different ability set from PLD and GLA (assuming GLA even still exists come 5.0). Now let's say they want to make it an INT based dps that uses swords, add the SPB tag onto all RDM swords... done again! Say, just for arguments sake, they wanted to make it a healer. They'd have to create a new line of swords with MND as the main attribute, maybe degens or scimitars. But then any new sword-based healers they add could also just be added onto this new sword.
Essentially, they just need to make a variant of each weapon type for every main attribute and then they could make any job using any weapon and just tag the new job on the old weapon. Any new book healer? goes on the codex. Any new book dps? goes on the grimoire. New book tank/physical dps...? New book type, maybe tome?
The only issue here is the shield. Not every sword dps should have to or even be able to use a shield. They'd have to find a way to make single handed swords gain the full attributes that are split between sword and shield while also disabling the use of the shield. Maybe all new STR sword dps could have a trait called doublehand that prevents the equipping of a shield while doubling STR and VIT on equipment in the main hand slot.
I would like to see a tank job that uses a halberd kind of based off the Swiss guard. I know Dragons are the main trademark polearm job but troops equipped wit halberds have been shown to be elite bodyguards in games and real life. No idea if any other FF game has done that before.
There have been a number of interviews where the idea of introducing jobs that are new to the franchise was mentioned.
Basically the various comments approximate to the following points.
- New jobs to the franchise are something that they would potentially like to do.
- Final Fantasy has a huge number of iconic jobs for them to pull from.
- Because of the huge pool of existing jobs within the franchise, many of which are considered iconic and are desired by fans of the series, those jobs will likely get precedence when deciding what new jobs are going to be implemented into the game.
- Jobs tend to begin as game-play concepts and then what iconic job it could potentially fit and be used to build is considered. If they really want to do a certain game-play concept but no existing job from the series really fits it, they may then introduce a completely new job to the franchise.
TLDR: Completely new jobs to the series are something that they would be up for but since this is a Final Fantasy fan-service MMO, existing iconic and fan favorite jobs get priority.
Honestly, I am expecting something along the lines of a gunblade magitek tank or something other Garlean inspired.
They can't. The system is setup so your weapon is they primary determinator of your class/job. They could reuse the models sure, but they would still have to make completely new items. A point to drive it home, if you try to equip a greatsword, globe, gun, katana, or rapier & focus, your job crystal is auto-equipped, but you cannot try to equip a job crystal and have it auto-equip a weapon. Effectuvely theyd have to revamp the entire class system to "tack-on" additional jobs to currently existing weapons. Also of note due to this, weapon is the only equipment slot that CANNOT be unequipped.
I'd like an Oriental type of tank that perhaps could be focused more on dodging (PLD = Block, War = Parry, DRK = Barrier). It would wield a large glavie weapon (think a handle with two blades on either end) and other hand is free. It could focus on Martial arts type of magic similar to monk (call it ki or Will or something) or drawing magic from the primals in Kugane.
Its Ultimate skill called Mirage (name is a work in Progress) = allowing it to dodge all attacks for 6 seconds with a CD similar to Warrior.
It could have no Anti knock backs but have 2 gap closers
its tank stance could reduce damage by 15% and increase dodge rate by 20% and enmity gen
Personally im just sick of all the European inspired tanks PLD, WAR, and DRK are all so similar, adding ANOTHER tank that does the SAME thing but with a Mace and shield / hammer is just boring (additional Blunts in games have a history of being very uninspired creations) so I dont see the point.
I nearly forgot this, but FF5 remakes an exclusive class called the Cannoneer. We can have a Ranged physical Tank that doesn't necessarily carry a cannon but has a mid range blunderbuss and can call in cannon fire
Just because its not in there doesnt mean it can't be put in when they decide to do this. Weapons are gonna clash between jobs and in a game with you can Multiclass as the main appel they are gonna have to keep adding classes to keep the player base happy. The soul Crystals are gping to be the Key here to do this.
Dancer. Dancer, Dancer, Dancer.
Evasion tank.
Look, I'm a DRK. My job has been screwed so many times because the magic defense became a joke after patches and the job doesn't have anywhere to go. We're not the best strength, we're not the best defense. We're "okay" and we're "balanced" but we've had over 200 pages arguing that. I won't argue that here, but all this excess talk is just another DRK.
We need an evasion tank. Buffs that guarantee evasion for a set period of time equivalent to the amount of damage mitigated by defensive buffs. DRK had parry but parry became useless, bring it back with Dancer in a productive counterattack ability that's been renowned in the Final Fantasy multiverse.
Zephyr Cape alone was one of the best defensive items in FF6 for those mentioning Magitek Knight.
We need unique roles. Take it from a tank that's been forgotten. We don't want another forgotten tank.
Honestly I would like to see a magic type tank, with maybe a whip. I would say wand, but that might be tricky since they phased those out.
In my eyes you could have it use the 'shadow clone' style of combat. Which in simplest ways to explain how I feel it would work is would be kind of like the mesmer from Guild Wars 2. It would use clones to extend it's life while also increasing it's damage. Different effects can be placed on the clones so when they die different debuffs get placed on the attacker. The tank would also switch places with a clone if it takes damage, and all aggro done by the tank gets placed on the clones. Finally the whip could be used to pull mobs in close and/or bind.
....Huh, well I guess I just want something like the mesmer in the game. Best way to not only get a new type of tank in, but a magic one to boot.
Earth's gimmick was being the only tank with ALL resistances and the ability to not be knocked around.....purely because they didn't have the ability to even walk around when all armored up. (for the longest time Earth was the only tank with any defenses against psychic damage AND they covered all the other types.)
And fire's thing was that since they constantly put out damage around them they were the highest dps tank and agro'd enemies by existing in the same vicinity of them....add to it that they are the only tank initially to have a self revive that explodes and makes you entirely invulnerable for a bit (both re-agroing your targets and giving you the benefit of the Invulnerability tanker with extra benefits). These two were pretty much THE go to tanks in the game followed by invulnerability since they were the best defensively and offensively. And then Willpower showed up with EVERY good part of every other tank build except a damage aura but no real identity beyond jack of all trades.
