A friendly PSA: Always check the vendor selling price before listing your own on MB

I can't tell you how much money I have ended up making because people aren't watching how much they sell items for on the MB, and that's not counting people who drop zeros or neglect to manually put in prices for their wares.

For instance, Clear Demimateria III sells for 5k through the vendor. I've seen people put it up for 3500 or so, meaning they miss out on 1500 gil plus the market fees. Another recent instance are many of those walls to glam up our houses; one that vendors for 3475 gil might go for 2800.

Just... You might as well go to the vendor and sell this stuff, all of ten to twenty feet from the retainer bell. Walk those few extra feet and you make more money. So please, check your prices. xD

They don't read the fine print. When you're about to put it up for sale through mb, it actually lists the vendor price on the item tooltip. I feel like people don't pay attention and lose out. But hey, what can ya do /shrug

Haha... I was actually wondering if anyone else scoured the market board for cheap listings like me.

I assume some ppl think they're being nice and just selling the items so that somebody else who wants it can get it... but on the flip side they might be undercutting somebody who gathered and crafted the item themselves and are trying to make gil for some other upgrade... /shrug


Personally, I don't like seeing items on the MB for Vendor price or less... so I buy them all up and vendor them myself. I mean, I haven't math'd it out, but I have this long theory that cheaper mats means more crafters means more competition for high level crafting items means I can't sell my end game stuff for as much...

You can make more just selling vender sold materials for 2-4 times what the vender charges.

When I first start any MMO I usually look for cheap listings to vender but then you can move on from there.

Considering the shear number of people I see listing items for exactly the vendor price, I think it might be the opposite; people DO check the 'fine print', but they're totally misunderstanding what it means. I'm pretty well convinced at this point that some people either see the vendor price and think that's some sort of average of what the item goes for on the MB, or don't understand how to go about vendoring an item.

You do realize that only a small fraction of players come to the forums and of that small fraction about 99% already know this. In fact people do it all the time to undercut what is on the market.

Or while you're listing stuff at the MB, right click > Have Retainer Sell Item.

Why walk to the vendor when your retainer can do it for you?

Isn't the default price when you go to list something on the MB the npc vendor price? You don't even have to check the tooltip--if you're lowering the price from what it initially lists, you're taking a loss.

I would say the bigger PSA would be to check vendor prices before buying an item from the MB. There are a lot of vendors items that are incredibly marked up. I've taken advantage of this a few times, but I'm generally far too lazy to keep it up for long.

This is all the truer if you've on good relation with the beast tribes because they let you buy tons of stuff no vendor can. Double double if you have all crafting guilds unlocked for their vendors. The problem is that you need to jump around, which is one reason why a lot of people won't bother.

Their laziness is gil in my pocket :)

No, don't do this, it's a terrible idea. People too lazy to check if something can be bought from a vendor (or too lazy to make the trek to that vendor) are some of my best customers. I've mostly been dealing in crossbreeding and housing items since the new wards were released, but I fill empty MB slots with vendor items at a modest markup, and they're great for a small but steady income between big ticket sales.

I try to balance it out.

If I notice something is very cheap to get on a vendor, I won't put it on the MB at all. Waste of my Retainer space.

If there is little to none of the item on the MB, I'll put it up at what I think is a reasonable price, and adjust when necessary. I mainly focus on putting HQs of the items up.

What annoys me though, is someone putting a level 10 piece of armor up for 100k gil. I mean, really?

Ofc Im always checking it. Im always listing my stuff -300% cheaper than the cheapest listing.

when i read the thread title, those were the 2 things i was gunna use as examples XD. Much gil through clear demimateria that people just waste on MB

I don't so much scrounge the markets as I check them if I'm in the area and am eating something or else brushing my teeth before bed, and I check for specific items that I know are likely to have this happen. With the Clear Demis now dropping from the Eureka Lockboxes, and also with a side fund I started as a pseudo experiment and project, I will laugh if I become able to buy a mansion--I've no intention of moving from my cozy cottage, but still--thanks to money that people on my server basically wasted on these things.

"Oh, you wanted to buy this mansion and couldn't? Sorry, all the money I gave my friend to buy this place was from those Clear Demis that you underpriced."

Some people do it just because they'd rather players use them. I mean, you barely need money in this game as it is, some people just don't care so much.

Basically what SenorPatty said. When selling an item, the defaut sell price is always going to be the vendor sell price. But I've heard from people who sell lower that they do it as a "service" to help players who can't afford much. A kind thought, I guess... but then market board PVP players just snipe it up and vendor it. I do this a lot; materia is my number 1 item to check for this. People always sell lower than vendor.

Then again, some people just want to list lower than the current lowest price and don't pay attention to vendor sell price, I guess. I gotta go with Skivvy though... bigger PSA, check vendor price before BUYING. Just do a google or garland tools search... It's not that hard. You'll find the vendor and price easily.

Yes, the default price is the npc vendor price, but you're selling at a loss at that price. The marketboard subtracts a fee whenever you make a sale (it was 5% the last time I paid attention to it). This is why when you list something for 1000 gil, you only get 950.

Pretty much this. I put up about 60 orchestration rolls for 1 gil on the MB thinking I was being nice and providing orchestration rolls for those that didn't wanna Eureka. Instead 1 person bought them all and probably vendored them for 150 gil each. Pretty sad considering its only 9k in profit doing this. I can make that much with a single hit on a gathering node.

It's kind of funny to see people selling the dyes used in the week's fashion check for 5K+ even if they're available from the dyemongers in major cities.

That is even worse lack of attention. The default price are the vendor price. To me that means that the person who's selling at MB don't even bothered to change the price. That makes me wonder why that person don't just sell it to vendor NPC, since it's faster gil than selling it at vendor price - tax.

Shhhhushh!!! You'll kill my Copper Ore sales on MB.

I almost think items on the market board the sell for less then npc price should be auto sold after exiting retainer for npc value.

It's kinda funny how people sell certain things for vendor price, but end up losing a bit of gil because of the fees. Never really understood the point of that. Why not just vendor things if they aren't worth more than their...well, worth?

so how does one sell to the market board for the full price? For some reason they only let you sell for the minimum price instead of the full price. Which vendor do i even go to? they won't sell for the bigger price, they always go for the lowest price...

The vendor price is the default price. Those people still don't read the fine print, but just click on OK without changing anything on the price.

I have so many countless millions of gil that I'll never have anything to spend it on because this game is vertical and not horizontal like FFXI was.
So I usually put low value stuff up for 1 gil because I just don't care anymore.

Why not just throw it away? Would be still faster than selling it on the MB

I once sold something for 3000 instead of 300,000 that felt bad XD
