What retainer jobs should I level?

Personal aesthetic tastes aside, what retainer jobs should I go for? Which are currently considered the best? I have 8 retainers and I was thinking of doing 4 combat, 1 MNR, 1 BNT, and 2 FSH, or would it be more effective to have more MNRs and BNTs than that?

I have 4. A DRG (like me =]) and one of each gathering. Honestly I've never really been in need for more than one type of gathering at a time. I guess in order to answer what YOU should make your retainers you should think about what you're going to need materials wise. Hunting materials (monster drops) always sell good since people don't want to go gather them themselves, if you want money. If you're going to do crafting you'd want to think if you're going to specialize or omnicraft and allocate appropriately: carpenters would want botanists and hunters, goldsmiths need miners and botanists and so forth.

I think it all depends on what items you'll be needing them to bring back more often for crafting, etc. That's the only thing I can think of to make much of a difference, if you already plan to have a wide range.

Combat go for whatever jobs you have the best gear you can craft or get for your retainers, otherwise it doesn't specifically matter what jobs they are for combat.

I know Botany can get you some nice stuff from the higher tiers but don't know what, just what i've heard since I don't do crafting/gathering.

The rest I have no idea on, not sure what the benefits are to crafting based jobs for retainers.

Depends on what materials you don't want to gather yourself. FSH is generally the least useful retainer - it can't catch all the fishes you can, and the ones it can catch are not all that useful. There are a few nice things you can get from the FSH exploration missions, but once you have them, then you have them.

They way I would do it in your case is: 3 combat, 2 MIN, 2 BTN, 1 FSH.

I will -never- pay for more retainers, so my 2 retainers are SCH and BTN.

Hmm With the xtra one I have 3 miners, 3 Botanist, 1 Fish, 1 DRK, 1 Drg.

Reason: Miners/Botanist are great if your crafting specially for Housing projects, well equipped I get a lot of HQ materials and rare gear from expeditions. Fish; mainly for Alchemy and food, Drk/Drg before it was worth it when they gather 30 pieces , now that is 10 I just use them for high end materials. Expeditions are nice if they are lvl 350+ in gear.

I very much love my gathering retainers. Min/Bot can save you lots of effort, especially if you know you want to craft something later but are busy doing dungeons. Have them get the stuff for you. They don't even care about spawn timers for unspoiled nodes. It's super handy.

Combat ones can serve the same purpose for leather and stuff like that, but also just finding random stuff. With how many you have, you can cover the gauntlet but I'd probably go with at least 2 MIN/2 BOT. Possibly 3 of each.

I have 4.

1 hunter, one botanist, one fisher, one miner.


It all works out well

I only pay for 1 extra retainer at the moment, so I have 1 combat, 1 min, 1 btn. Honestly the combat retainers are the most useful to me personally. Kinda wish I had more than 1.

if you have 8 retainers, you should have 2 combat, 2 MIN, 2 BTN, 2 FSH.

or 1 FSH and 1 more of any of the other 3.

Combat retainers are typical the best since it allows you having to avoid farming mobs. At the moment, I don't even have a FSH retainer as they offer nothing in Stormblood. Best thing they bring back is mats for Seafood Stew, so I'd avoid having more than one of them. My own arrangement is...

Three DoW/M
Two MIN
Two BTN

Miner is incredibly useful if you do gardening. Grade 3 soil every hour whereas BTN can bring back a lot of potion mats.
