Male Spring Bottoms. What the hell?

Can I get an official response from the dev team as to why the male version for Spring Bottoms looks like trash level 10 crafting gear. Thank you.

Oh damn, so it's ok that the females get some Daisy Dukes hotpants while the men are still left behind with yet another piece of boring gear. I would of loved some kind of trimmed shorts that's actually in line with Spring rather than them. Really wondering if they will do Summer Gear and how exactly they will look....

Its well documented that the equipment design team has a bias toward female characters.

It's weird to me that something like this

makes the dev team so uncomfortable to the point where the item shown in the OP is the alternative they'd rather have.

Sadly, for SE, they think that only females play this game. This is obviously not the case. (We know there are guys who play female characters. We get it. It's okay.)

SE, you need to realize that MEN also play this game and also pay your salary with our sub money. Treat us equally or risk losing money.

I want you to have options as much as the next guy, but those are the exact same patterns, just one is longer and doesn't have the ends rolled up. It's not TRASH.. it's not what you wanted but it's not trash. Is it shorts? do you want shorts? cause you can ASK for shorts without saying something else is garbage.

Because male knees are disgusting, specially Lalafell ones.

We do ask. It's just that there's apparently a 2 year waiting time for guys :T

We have been asking, for a while in fact... SE seems to have plugged their ears to our cries.

And can you honestly say those ugly mom jeans aren't trash? Come on. There are so many people who wouldn't be caught dead in pants like that. I bet we'll get "extended shorts" for summer again because male legs are so icky and discomforting to the designers.

You're looking at the wrong thing. The pattern doesn't matter as much when Generic Pants™ is all they seem capable of dishing out for us. You take that same exact pair of pants and make them even knee-long, a bit baggy, and boom, you have about the most innovative design for legs-slot for males this game has seen in years.

This movement for male short shorts should have a mascot to grab the attention of the devs. I propose you adopt Godbert Manderville as your mascot, gentlemen! For muscle is what makes a man, and clothing should not hold you back from showing off your manliness the way only a Manderville man can!

i bet you the fix will be to give the female model the long trousers instead of the shorts

See Godbert even existing baffles me. The guy runs around most of the time in the nude, if he bothers to wear anything he doesn't even wear pants at all, he wears a dress-esque piece for the Starlight events, and there's an entire questline - yes, a questline where you need to repeatedly apply salamander oil on his body, and then this is revisited in the Hildy quests when you need to do the same for his son. But giving guys pants that don't cover from waist to ankle somehow makes them too uncomfortable to implement.

I'm not offended, but I'm going to say that instantly using strong language like "trash" to describe everything you slightly dislike lessens the impact of everything else you say. Don't say trash when you mean plain. Word choice , especially in text, is very important.
I don't see that as "feminine gear" though. It's rolled up shorts. The idea that it's "feminine" in the first place may be why guys don't get something like that, societal embedded perception keeping the designers from seeing that kind of things and just making it for everyone. Now I need to ask for context, if both sexes had gotten the exact same shorts would you be happy? Do you think there are people who like the long jeans? Personally I'd bet someone else has been waiting for pants with a jeans pattern for a while.
Personally, it's not striking. They're rolled up shorts. It's actually a little weird to have rolled up jeans shorts in the context of this thematically old-timey , leather and metal, lop sided everything world. But hey, enjoy the shorts, I don't have to wear them. I do think that posting about every new gear we get with a "why does females get a *** and males only get a ***" is always going to disappoint you. However requesting, and yes repeating that request a LOT, for what you actually want: shorts, capri pants, poofy arabian pants, hakama whatever, will gain more support (I'd gladly support most extended options for gear, though I'm gonna say we really don't need anymore options for subligars).

Heck we already have subligars and other "underwear" dudes run around in already anyway. So if you don't give the crowd that wants to show off their legs more options they'll just run around in those more. If the dev team was wanting to avoid that they're already too late.

Personally I feel like this is less a "men showing skin" issue as it is a potential styling issue. They probably had a specific look in mind for the male Spring set as the shirt looks somewhat dressy, so they might have thought it would look odd with shorts (at least at the length male shorts tend to normally be). Thus pants instead. A lot of the sets in this game feel that way.

That doesn't make it right though. They could have given both genders a choice between pants and shorts and let us decide. Because how I would like to dress a guy and how the guys on the dev team think men should dress are potentially two very different styles.

Probably because when they do give male characters "feminine" gear, other (more?) people complain. See what happened to the WHM AF. Male characters had pretty much the same AF1 and AF2 for WHM as female characters. People complained, so SE made the AF3 much different between them.

People complained about the WHM AF1? But that looks very nice on guys (especially Roegadyn). AF2 is a dumpters fire, though.

I definitely agree that males and females should get the same attention to gear. I even imagine it would take less work to make the gear unisex... they actively created two different models for this piece and moulded it to each model rather than just copy/pasting the same short shorts for everyone. Why can't boys have cute clothes too??? I was so disappointed when I saw the girl shorts and knew instantly that the guy version would be worse...

someone on reddit called them medical scrubs and i died. although tbh, their comparison isnt too far off....

just further adds salt to the wound that se decided to give people with male pcs a torn up manderville outfit as an exclusive purchase. but in all honesty i think it's a pretty decent metaphor to show how se cba to give male characters something so simple as a pair of above the knee shorts.

Um..above the knee shorts haven't been in fashion for ages. You can watch any movie from the 70s or 80s to see how ridiculous they can look. Maybe a long, narrower below the knee short with rolled up cuffs would look better, but there's no way an exact copy of the girl's shorts would work well on male characters.

Let's just be rid of gender locked gear. All it does is stunt creativity and potential comedy. Both bring a lot of joy.

The most pressing fashion issue I often see on this board is the lack of a bunny suit for men, so forgive me if I'm not sold on their judgment either.

TBH, it's really hard to design flashy clothes that don't look ridiculous or like a costume on them, so understated is a lot safer. I think also for a japanese person, shorts have a big "little boy" connotation; if you look at films from the same time period, the kid is almost always rocking above the knee shorts. Kind of why the pair Sora in Kingdom hearts wears is ok on him, when the near same thing on Tidus makes him look silly.

I think a game that did really well for men's fashion is the visual novel Bad Apple Wars, and I wouldn't mind SE looking at that game some.

It kinda irks me when we have unisex gear but the models are different for some reason. And this effects males and females. I've heard plenty of players who play female complain that an item they think will be pants becomes a skirt and stockings for them or odd short shorts, like the SCH AF1/2 gear and Bard AF2/3 gear; and remember the big issue with the DRG AF1 armor people were pissed. Likewise, people didn't like the Ifrit tank armor on guys as the chest window made no sense. I'm tired of seeing a piece of gear I think would look nice on me, just to have it look completely different, for no reason. Why does the female Quan get the leg designs but the males is all white, stupid. Yet something like the original Bard AF gear is okay? SE confuses me.

SO much this. They have some really old fashioned Japanese culture constraints or their gear designers have no idea about basic male clothing and gear fashion.

I never understood that they dont create short pants for males while this game has subligars on mass..I mean those show way more than these shorts ever will..SE please..

We have subligars, we have banana hammocks... and then there's the AF1 WHM set. Where guys finally get shorts! ...but it's only because someone pressed the Red Button™ so the trade-off is that for ladies a piece of gear that rightly should've been pants or what not is a pair of panties. It's like they can't find a decent middle ground.
