Recommend a class which will do the least harm!

Lol, when I say the least harm, I don't mean to the mobs, I mean to a group!

I'm a new player, fairly 'mature' and don't have the mental and physical dexterity of the latest Tekken world champion if you get where i'm going.

I'd like a class I can battle through to max level to experience the game, but as and when I group, I don't want to be "That guy!"
If you rely on me to tank or heal, i'm afraid you're probably gonna die or rage-kick me... or both!

Suggestions? (this could include going back to Minecraft!)

So id say BLM 1-50, RDM 50-70. BLM starts out fairly simple(fire stance for damage, ice stance for mana regen, keep thunder dot going whenever possible). It gets its staple AoE attack early(fire 2 at level 18), so dungeons arent too bad. And you really only have to hit one or two buttons every 2 seconds to do good damage. Dodging attacks while trying to finish casting can be annoying, but you just need to learn attack priority(this attack will kill me so i stop casting and run, that attack will hurt me so i can finish casting then run, some other attack does very low damage so i can ignore it and keep going unless my healer is dead or mad at me). At higher levels(over 50) BLM gets more complex as you have more stuff to keep track of, which is where you could potentially switch to RDM(which you have to be 50 to unlock anyway). RDM is also fairly easy(cast quick spells to proc duelcast, use duel on long spells, balance mana levels, use melee combos when up), and while the damage is lower it has a couple advantages. Its much more mobile then BLM(so dodging is less of an issue), and at higher levels it has a heal and a res that it can bust out in emergencies(BLM has essentially no unique utility currently, just damage).

...Kind of an odd way to put it. All DPS in this game are viable; in the very high end raids, some are seen as a little behind, but they're all still capable of doing the content. If you don't want the responsibility of tanking or healing...

I'm going to second the vote for RDM. It's rotation is relatively easy, but also brings a ton of utility to the party -- namely resurrections, and you can give healers MP. And if you happen to mess up and eat an avoidable aoe... you can heal yourself too. But, fair warning, 'helping' heal the tank or such when it's not an emergency will probably annoy healers.

I would suggest that you TRY tanking and healing. They're surprisingly easy to play, require little in the way of off-GCD moves (which is mainly where the physical dexterity requirement for some jobs comes into play), and mechanics tend to be pretty lax for them (At least outside of raids).

Red Mage may be easy, but it also has a very rapid button-flow.

I'd honestly recommend at least trying healing or tanking first; they tend to be the easier insofar as dexterity is concerned. I'd recommend Warrior or White Mage for something fairly straightforward, without much button-sprawling required.

Regarding tanks, I was going to try a GLD as reading up on PLD, they seem a fairly simple playstyle.

True, they all start out fairly simple. How complex they eventually get and how quickly they get there varies from class to class. And the fact that you can level every class on the same character with no penalty means theres little reason not to try multiple things. As far as tanks go, from what im told PLD is the most intuitive but i havent played it personally. For healers, WHM is supposed to be the equivalent(though the healing fairy means that at lower levels the burden on a SCH is lower).

RDM as people said, or you can try Bard as well.
Support abilities, high moblity and not very complex rotation (based on proc with dots)

Smn...by far the easiest...just spam ruin....plus your pet auto attacks :/

BRD has a low skill floor but by the time you get close to 70 you will be tracking a lot of different things; it can be quite hectic (at least in my experience). It's not as convoluted as MCH or SMN by a long shot (hah) but just keeping track of everything during an active fight can be a bit overwhelming.

If you want low-stakes, WHM is very easy- straightforward to play, tons of raw power, and great at turning around a scary fight. Healing in general in this game is actually pretty easy until you start doing EX/Savage content. There's a few bumps on the road to 70 but they aren't outrageous - if you err on the side of caution and know where your "srs bsns" buttons are you'll probably be fine.

As a new player who started out as a marauder, here is my basic experience:

It does start out pretty simple and The Smith lessons are super helpful. It took me some time to get to 50 since this was before the MSQ exp boost, so I was given more time to learn. The rudest comment I got was 'why on earth wouldn't you use tank stance' in one mid-level dungeon, which is not rude at all (of course I'm sure they complained about it in private later). That was when I learned about stances! :D

That said, you need to have fast reactions if you start out as tank or healer, not to mention a thick skin because there are some buttheads out there and tanks/healers are easy targets. Otherwise, the safest type is gonna be one of the long range DPS classes (archer or thaumaturge or arcanist) just because it lets you stand away from the action somewhat. Fights get more demanding later on no matter what the class, so be ready to learn and experiment and ask others for advice!

(PS I still do stupid things as a tank like chase butterflies during Ravana but at least I don't fall off the cliff on Titan normal now. Progress!)

A class you can constantly mess up on and everyones fine with it? A dps is the easiest to get away with this, but no matter who you pick if someone is looking for faults in others theyll find them. DPS parsers let others know how everyone is doing, and are allowed by square as long as you dont rub it in other peoples faces.

What im trying to say is, play what you want. I had a friend go from pugulist/monk to black mage since they werent having much fun 60-70. This was after them playing monk all of 1-60. I play mostly warrior, but ive been playing summoner cause theyre also fun. Play what you want when you want.

Pretty much everything is viable, especially for leveling content, that it really doesn't matter what you pick :)

That being said DPS classes are considered to be less stress than tanks or healers, but they have longer queue times. Tanks and healers have shorter queue times, but people like to blame them when runs go wrong, even when it's not their fault. If the run goes well though, it's usually a guarantee of getting at least one commendation.

If you're willing to take on the extra responsibility, I will always recommend starting as an Arcanist and making proper use of its ability to be both a summoner and a scholar.

This will allow you to do the solo quests as a summoner, and get fast queues as a scholar. If you're doing that from the beginning (well, from level 30+), dungeons/trials should happen enough that you never feel like you're just jumping to scholar without knowing how to play it (it's people that wait until they're 60+ or 70 that generally have that problem, but someone that switches back and forth from the get-go typically will have no problem playing both equally well).
