From what I know Mateus was a very popular RP server.
It's something I've wanted to try but haven't ever gotten around to.
Mateus and Balmug have big groups of people who do it.
I RP on Cactaur. There's a handful of folks floating around but I don't know if there is a full on group.
I like to dress the part of my job, use emotes to display my desires and emotions in parties, and I generally speak from my character's point of view in content so I guess I role-play but that is about the extent of it. I heard Balmug has role-play and it just reopened. The way you worded your question though were you perhaps looking for an rp linkshell?
There's a P active RP group on Siren, I can get you in touch with the group on Discord if you'd like.
That's about my level of roleplay too. I save drama & sex for my webcomic stories.
I'm basically looking for information on things like Linkshells, Free Companies, & Discord channels because I know rpers can organize themselves in all sort of ways. :)
Also glad to see Tridus and Moro responses. Don't be too surprised if you see a lalafell in your neck of the woods.
That's the extent of my role-playing as well. While not extensive role-play, you can look at it as I am perpetually in this state when I am online, and it's actually weird to me when people start talking about RL situations via chat. For me, the typical out-of-character chat is usually still related to the game. This could be frustrations with RNG, or a DF group, to informing the FC about their current progress with a goal they have.
I tend to get into character when progressing the MSQ, or anything of strong significance such as the quest lines involved with raids, or job quests. If you start talking bills and kids, I will usually remain silent. I don't log into the game to deal with adult schite.
Well, Balmung is the biggest RP server on Aether, with Mateus in second place. Right now you may sneak a character onto Balmung as they lifted the blockade, but do try other servers as well. You may like a small RP community over a large one.
I wanted to try my hand at RP and first I tried with an alt in Mateus, then I did an alt in Balmung and let me tell you, the difference is huge, not just because Balmung is considerably bigger, but the quality of RP I witnessed was totally different. I'm not talking bad about people in Mateus, I wasn't there for too long, but Balmung convinced me to move also my main character there. Of course there's weirdos like everywhere, but hey, just stay away from the Quicksand and you are okay! (or from Ul'dah in general lol)
There are two RP Fc's on Midgardsormr and i think one or two LS. We're not too big or too small and most of the RP tends to happen in the housing wards. Though occasionally it has popped up in random spots. That's one of the server's charm is the occasional random whackyness. Unless it's a Mr. Face event then most of the server is in on it and that can happen all over the place.
I don't "speak in character" but otherwise, I do that too.
I also like to emote at NPCs or locations when it seems appropriate. Bowing to important people, 'paying respects' to the dead.... it just feels right for the story and my character.
(A lot of extra dialogue goes on in my head as well, anything from talking to shopkeepers to important emotional moments.)
When we do stuff that you can do at your level (like roulettes), we'd love to have you. :D Send me a friend request and I'll get you onto the server where we organize stuff. Last night we did a full team of 8 on Sigmascape and got everyone's loot for the week, so now we can do other stuff. :)

After the free transfers the amount of rpers sky rocketed, a lot of them left but there are still tons left over. It’s looking like there will be several houses reclaimed once enough time elapses.
I have macros set for each class for when I am in dungeons. As a PLD, for example, I start a dungeon by saying the Night's Watch oath. If people respond, then I continue with the RP. Most people seam to be into it, but from time to time either no one responds or they say no RP please and Ill just stop. I have different text macros for different abilities, as well as when the dungeon ends. I find PLD to be the easiest (and albeit most basic) class to RP as. but thats just my .02.
I tend to only be able to do this in dungeons as there is really no RP community on Famfrit. I do the basics tho... emoting appropriately to NPC/PCs, kneeling to the dead, etc etc. If I catch someone examining/looking at me, I usually wink or bow, or give a quick Hail! to a friend if I see them about
I normally like to lurk on here but seeing that you are from Cactuar and rp I was wondering if I can get in on this too. I've joined one rp linkshell there but they are in the process of rebuilding everything so I haven't gotten to involved with them yet. I'm working on my character's bio and stuff so I would love to put it to use sometime!
I think this likely comes down to a number of factors beyond population. Population is certainly relevant as the larger the pool, the more likely you are to find quality people within it. But beyond this, I noticed a few things when Balmung locked and people started to transfer off to Mateus: One is that most of the well-established, high-quality RPers stayed. Most likely because they had built up friendships within the community, had a house/FC that they liked, and felt like leaving the community would be crazy.
The second thing I noticed in heavy amounts was that a lot of the people that transferred off to Mateus seemed to have issues on Balmung. Either problems with some of the people on it, bad blood, or whatever else. I'm not even remotely saying that Mateus only has problem-folks on it(I've rolled a toon there even), but it's a factor. When Balmung locked every person that decided to leave for Mateus in my FC were people that were causing drama and weren't happy and/or were looking for a fresh start.
So I think you have a lot of different factors for a lot of different people that might make it different from Balmung. Most importantly in my opinion is that Balmung has always been the 'main RP server' and that tends to be where your more hardcore roleplayers gather. Same can be said for just about every MMO to date when it has come to the RP community.
