Im at work, so I can’t skim through the various reddit/forum posts about this, but have you checked Square’s site regarding lost or damaged tokens? Here’s a link - http://support.na.square-enix.com/fa...90&id=496&la=1
Well, if it's dead, you could try popping it open and see if there's some kind of small battery that you could replace. Even if you break it, you're not any worse off than you were before.
Can't say I haven't been a little worried about this myself at times.
My token's kept plodding along since FFXI Zilart somehow and the procedure to remove it is gated behind a login that needs it.
Ooop yeah I'm a dork =( I had it in my head I got it with one of the FFXI CE's, but thinking about it, that one came with XIV's CE and I ordered the one I'm using currently from Square themselves a little prior to that.
Afaik this only works for software tokens (aka the phone app)?
The security tokens came out in 2009, dunno how you woulda had one since Zilart ;p. But likewise, the one I obtained in 2009 is still going strong after being used almost every day, several times a day occasionally.
Edit: As for OP, I hope you remember your Emergency Removal Password: https://secure.square-enix.com/accou...vc/coercioncan. It's the only way around this without waiting as far as I recall.
Yeah Ive had this token since the FFXIV collector's edition for 1.0 I believe. It's trucked along quite nicely until now. Ive emailed tech support as its all I can do right now... They really should make it so you can use the code on the back of the device to remove it....
I feel the need to point out that SE gives you an emergency token removal code on your account page when you attach the token in the first place and they advice you in big red text to keep it somewhere safe so you won't lose it.
I think this is only for the software token.
Fo the physiical token you need a working one to remove it yourself.

To remove the security token, please follow the method below:
1. Log into the Square Enix Account Management System
2. Select "One-Time Password" under "Services/Options"
3. Click on "Adjust Security Token (key ring type) settings"
4. Select "Security Token Removal" from the available options
After removing the Security Token, you will no longer be required to enter a one-time password when you log in.
Please note that after removing a Security Token, you will not be able to use it again. If you wish to use a Security Token in the future, you will need to purchase a new one.
If you play FINAL FANTASY XI and have a Mog Satchel because of the Security Token, it will no longer be available in the game once you remove the Security Token.
Whatever code it IS giving you? WRITE THAT DOWN. It may be needed later.
I hate security tokens for games. I had an authenticator for another game's account once.... changed my phone and had a very hard time correcting that situation.
I prefer the company texting me codes for additional security if need be.... tokens and authenticators can be a huge pain.
Wow, this thread really hit close to home as I've also had my keyring token since XI and I've been wondering how much battery life is left. In recent months I've noticed I'd need to press the button a bit harder to get the one-time password to appear- so I feel like it might've been near it's time. I wasn't aware if it just "dies out" or you get a warning on the screen, so just to be safe I immediately just deactivated that one (RIP) and registered the unused one from ARR's CE. To be honest, I read about the emergency password but had no idea that it wasn't for the keyring token- I had been putting off acquiring it thinking I still had time. Now I see it wasn't even relevant for me.
ANYWAY, I read this on the service agreement for registering the new one:
So, there must be a low battery warning? I didn't know about that (damn, I probably could've still got some more use out of the old one). Has anyone seen what it looks like? This is all I can share to be of help.Quote:
If you have a Physical Security Token and it runs out of batteries, it shall no longer obtain a one-time password and, consequently, you may be unable to log in to your Square Enix Account and the Services. Accordingly, if you have a Physical Security Token and the Physical Security Token indicates that its batteries are running low, you should immediately disable your Security Token registration or obtain a new Security Token.
In the event that your Security Token runs out of batteries, malfunctions, or becomes otherwise inaccessible or unusable, please contact the Square Enix Support Center for further assistance.
-Oh, and there was this, so the battery removal thing being a no-no is legit:

every time I push the button on my token and nothing happens this exact scenario plays through my mind and it TERRIFIES me. ... and then the button works.
I should switch to the phone one.. but.. effort...
I've had my physical security token for a couple of years now when i started playing ARR, and it's still going strong I think. I also have one for WoW, and that one is quite a bit older, but it still works as well. I might have to consider getting the mobile security app for WoW before i get the one for XIV. This same scenario scares me, and I don't want to end up basically losing the game because of something so stupid.
I hope you're able to get your situation sorted out, OP.
Kinda makes me wanna disable my token now (I've had mine since 2009) and switch to the phone...
The thought of having to deal with SE support is more scary.
From what I understand, with the physical tokens, the emergency removal password is the serial code on the back.
Try it? https://secure.square-enix.com/accou...vc/coercioncan
Yep, this is how it started on mine, but it was like that for months and months that I didnt pay much heed to it. When it finally died of course it had to be after support hours on a Friday
Lol. On the plus side, I just finally got my account back. Took all of 2 minutes with chat support once they reopened.
Moral of this story, if its taking longer or harder button presses, or your token seems to take a while to display a code... remove it and get a new one or get the software app.
(Note: If you do the software app, make sure you keep your emergency removal code handy in the event of an issue)

I tried this, it does not work.

I actually happen to have two extra keychain security tokens on hand. One from my husband's 1.0CE, and one from the 2.0CE. So, I'll just use one of those. The token that died was from my 1.0 collector edition so it's lasted quite a few years.
Anyways, thanks to everyone who tried to help. It was muchly appreciated.
Mine doesnt work when i push the button anymore. I literally have to push and wiggle the button to get a code. I havent gotten any letters though. The contact between the button and what it presses against must be failing in mine.
Eh. Nostalgia I guess? I like the weight of the physical token in my hands. Also I'm the dumbass who forgets their phone and loses it all over the place. I'm olde - when I first had a cell phone it was a Nokia the size of a small brick and couldn't be lost like my supersexyslender S6 can....
1.0 or 2.0? 1.0 came out only one year after the FFXI ones did, so would make sense if that one. It also depends heavily on your usage more than the time passed; how many times do you end up using it per day? etc. Since posting in this thread I have actually noticed my XI one is slower to pop up after being pressed down than it used to be, so I think mine is on the way out as well.
Well, it is the 1.0 but for some reason it just feels like it should have lasted much longer. Its really hard to accept this as the culprit when I'm wearing a mechanical watch that has lasted 10+years. My only guess is they really did use a very cheap battery.
Edit: Turns out this watch doesn't have a battery in it, its even powered mechanically. Who knew, it was passed down to me from my dad.
Welp I guess the real question is, do we feel like we deserve the phone version for free after paying for these? We won't get no where unless other people are running into the same problems and we all raise our voice. I don't feel like I should have to spend money on the phone version, these physical versions should be transferable.
I will literally run this thing till its dead and pester the hell out of SE support just to get it removed before canceling it and buying the phone version if it comes to it.
To the best of my knowledge, they're rebranded Digipass GO 6's which are expected to last at least 7 years. Don't know when exactly you got yours, but it's been 7 and a half years since XIV 1.0 came out so that's not too bad! :D
Mine was the 1.0CE token that died prompting me to make this thread. Honestly though, for the cost (normally goes for $10US) Its been a great little device that's been at my beck and call for years! Even if I didnt have replacements, I'd buy another one just because overall its less of a headache than the cell phone app.
(I used the cellphone app for a secondary acct I have and it was nothing but headaches for me. I ended up buying an extra token for that acct a while ago not realizing I had 2 extra keychain tokens sitting in CE boxes...)
