What sort of lies and perfidy from the time of the Allagan Empire are so important that we are now collecting Tomestones of Mendacity?
So the theory of the trial series being based on the Four Symbols was right. Ayy.
... more when I get home, whenever that is.
I could not watch: Are there any clues to what bosses are in Sigmascape? Anything from another Final Fantasy? I am hoping each Omega features bosses from a different one.
And Four Lords with a white tiger? I am predicting a Black turtle, a Red Bird, and a Blue Dragon since, you know, Chinese mythology, lots of anime, and Final Fantasy XI and XII mark a precedent.
And Tomestones of Mendacity are an interesting choice. The value of tomestones was always what they could tell us about the Allagan Empire. Its way of making war (soldiery), its arts (poetics), its beliefs (scripture, verity, philosophy, creation). I guess you can learn a lot about a culture by what it lies about, but it's funny they would be labelled like that :p
EDIT: And the Four Gods played a huge part in the excellent but oft-forgotten Final Fantasy Type-0. I am actually surprised it took them this long to include, though given the Geomancy/Astrology aspects of the Astrologian quests in 4.0, it makes sense to have them now.
I'm curious as to how the patch's name is going to play into things.
Mostly whether it's just figuratively referring to the start of a new age in Doma's history, or if there's a more literal interpretation to it. The only mention of a "sun" we've had in lore would be Azim, so perhaps the steppe could be more involved in this part of the MSQ then I expected.
Well, we know the Allagan Empire was dealing with rebels who wanted to dethrone Xande after Amon brought him back. So anything the rebels came up with would probably be declared to not be the truth (Mendacity) by Amon and Co. I could easily see Verity (truth) being Allagan state-okayed files while Mendacity (lies) are files they denounce.
That's a fair point. It's also very likely to refer to more than one thing as patch titles are liable to do. I believe that 'Sun' may also refer to Hien and what he represents for Doma. It also may play into Omega somehow.
Ultimately, though, I think you're on the right track. The Azim Steppes received overwhelmingly positive feedback from what I've seen on various sites and Hien is tied rather heavily to the Xaela. I think the MSQ will definitely take us back there and this seems like the perfect time to do so.
So I predict that whilst 4.1 focused mainly on Ala Mhigo and Ul'dah we'll be seeing 4.2 revolve around Doma and the The Azim Steppes. I also think that Kugane is likely to receive focus in every single content patch.
I expected 4.2 to focus on Doma, since 4.1 was nothing but Ala Mhigo. We have two fronts to deal with, and I completely anticipated ping-ponging between the two regions during the reconstruction process. Curious as to who the major players are going to be, since except Tataru the Scions probably can't be too involved given the boat trip. I'm also expecting Gosetsu and [Yo]Tsuyu to make their reappearance here. (What is the actual patch name, by the way?)
Glad to see Azys Lla get more attention; I thought it was the most under-utilized piece of content from Heavensward. I'd have preferred some new piece of the area be explored, such as the Habisphere, but I'll take what I can get. Also nice to see Hells' Lid get explored, though I'm curious as to how it'll distinguish itself from Sohm Al (Hard).
As others have said, basing the new trial series on the Four Symbols from Chinese mythology means that in addition to the White Tiger, we're very likely to get a Blue Dragon, Black Turtle, and Vermilion Bird from 4.3 - 4.5. (The names for these bosses will likely be Byakko, Seiryu, Genbu, and Suzaku, unless they go with the original Chinese names that I don't know and probably couldn't remember the spelling of anyway.)
Eureka is FINALLY here! At last, something for casul players like myself to do besides grind tomestones and run Rabanastre once a week! (I'm maxed on Kojin rep, have capped tomestones in both values, and just need like 2 more Rabanastre clears to max out my gear without raiding.)
Eureka is not here for sure. They've said the same thing about it appearing in 4.25 as they said about it appearing in 4.15 (it is aiming for release in 4.25). Only we now have concept art and a tad more information about it. And currently... I've yet to see how it's any different then the Diadem with a PotD stat growth mechanic slapped on top of it. We still havn't seen any gameplay of it. So I'm not holding my breath. SE has said that they're going to be showing more information about it at Live Letter 41, but until then... nope... not expecting anything. As it is, I am disappointed that we won't be able to progress a Relic weapon/armor in the normal game itself (no more leveling other classes while tombestone grinding for relics), so it might turn out to be more trouble then it's worth anyway.
Long story short, SE has been heavily favoring the raiding community so far and I don't see that stopping.
From the name alone, I am hoping to see more of the Steppes. Maybe find a Moon for our Sunbro... Valentines Day is Mid February, after all.
'Rise of a New Sun'.
I think this time around Eureka is actually ready to go live, it's just 'delayed' so that content can be staggered. Something always seems to be held back for a month these days when a new patch arrives. It happened with Rival Wings.
The thing were I'm a little bit curious is that 4.1 didn't really opened a new story. If we compare with 3.1, where the Warriors of Darkness were revealed and where there was the turmoils linked with the statute of Ishgard, in 4.1 we have the opening for the Anantas which seems to be pretty much closed by the end, the fact that Ala Migho is going to be rebuild thanks to the help of Ul'dah (is that me, or in this game, Ul'dah is the most important city everytime ? It was the same for Heavensward after all. Everything seems always okay in Limsa Lominsa and Gridania...), and that Raubahn is coming back home. Except from that, we have Gosetsu and Yotsuyu coming back in Doma, which we knew from the end of the 4.0 and the little talk in Garlemald.
So I get it that they don't reveal the plotline for the next expac before the .4 or .5, but at least there is an introduction of sort of what is going to happen in the transition. We had rebuilding of Ala Migho, now we will have rebuilding of Doma, with probably a story regarding Yotsuyu and her somewhat redemption, but after that? Don't get me wrong, I really like the story of FF14, but I kinda feel that 4.1 was lacking of an compeling start...
Also I would really like to see more of our friendly neighbours Ascians at some point. They are after all our worst ennemies no?
As of 4.15, I can't disagree. On top of the usual extra boss phase for high-end raiding (Neo Exdeath), both Shinryu EX and Unending Coil aren't exactly casual content. Like I said, I really don't have a lot to do right now except for running Rabanastre once a week for an upgrade item. When Eureka is released, if it's just Diadem with some extra bonuses added on, it still won't be the sort of thing that's up my alley (or even doable right now) since I'm for most intents and purposes a solo player.
Thank you! That makes me think the Steppe might be involved as well.
Ul'dah gets a lot of focus because it is the most dynamic (re: prone to conflict) of the city-states. Gridania is stuck under the rule of the Elementals and Limsa has Merlwyb as a strong-willed leader who isn't lacking in the political power department. Ul'dah has a lot of players and power spread around, making it very easy to have a power struggle come up. On top of that, Ul'dah is the wealthiest city-state, meaning the majority of funding for any major project is likely to come from there. As the main recipient of Ala Mhigan refugees, it is also tied more closely to Ala Mhigo than the other city-states. (I agree the attention Ul'dah gets is somewhat excessive, but see above.)
I believe that the main arc starting in 4.1 was intended to be Fordola moving toward the path of atonement. The 4.x series, as anyone could have guessed from 3.5 onward, was always going to be about rebuilding Doma and Ala Mhigo. (Did anyone actually think we'd fail to liberate them?)
The Ascians are our main obstacle, but they are mostly background instigators, not actors on the stage. Us having to fight and kill Lahabrea, Nabriales, and Igeyorhm directly and in such a short timeframe (approx. 3 months by my estimation) is highly unusual given how ancient they are, and considering the conflicts led to their deaths this will have undoubtedly pushed the remaining Ascians to playing a more conservative game.
I'm hoping that the Hell's Lid storyline will involve Tansui in the same way that Skalla involved Arenvald and Alphinaud. The Ruby Sea is largely controlled by The Confederacy so it would make sense for them to show up if a threat is identified in the area. Catching up with memorable characters and going on an adventure with them is something I want to see more of moving forward. That I may have a crush on Tansui is completely unrelated. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I also want to see more of Magnai - and the Xaela in general - to see how they're faring. Extra points will be dished out if we see a few members of some of the tribes that did not get screen-time the first time around.
I'm cautiously optimistic about Yotsuyu's involvement in the story moving forward. I'd prefer her to be faking amnesia in a last ditch effort to try and get close to Hien. I'd prefer her to not succeed (admittedly since I'm rather biased and like Hien quite a bit) but I simply don't want her to become a shy, submissive 'waifu' for Gosetsu. There's history between them, since the implication in previous exchanges between them is that they both served Garlemald's interests in the past. Though I'll be rather annoyed if it turns out that both Fordola and Yotsuyu are getting a redemption storyline that also allows them to live afterwards when the likes of Gaius, the Warrior of Darkness and Regula did not. Especially in regards to Regula, I want to see Emperor Varis' reaction to his best friend's death.
Relevant Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Spoilers:
Some of the major antagonists in the game are shown to be fiercely protective of each other and show genuine concern when the protagonists threaten their companions. That is what I want to see more of within FF14. It's a lot more interesting than having the antagonists cackle and treat their underlings and comrades as pawns.
Just curious, is there a transcript repository listed somewhere? I rather not scavenge 16 hours worth of cutscenes. I'm thinking it's something related to the Steppe other than Hien's coronation, there was a little bit question hanging at the end of steppe line.
I haven't actually looked through it personally, but this (EDIT: Stormblood-specific) MSQ text transcript was linked to Reddit a while back (and very recently updated for 4.1). It might be useful.
Gamerescape's FFXIV wiki and the XIVDB seem pretty comprehensive. Tried those? (I'm not actually sure if either has cutscene text, but i believe they at least have quest and journal dialogs).
They're useful but kinda hard trying to place a context when it spans several quests lines. I'm interested how the tribes relation is between Xaela and Raen. The Ruby Princess only took exile since Doma was fallen, it's possible they're coming back to the Steppe is it? Also would be nice to see how things are now between Magnai, Sadu, Cirina in 4.2.

Is that Exdeath still hanging around the top of the picture? Why's he still there?
On an unrelated note, I hope they do something more visually interesting with the other 3 trials, Byakko looks kinda disappointing. Really looking forward to Genbu, at least.
EDIT: gaddangit now the image isn't loading properly, it was there once already... Was the patch banner
Story wise, really curious what's going to happen in Doma. We've wrapped up Ala Mhigo and a loose end from back in 1.0. Though I'm going to bet we probably won't see much of Doma until 4.3, since the dungeon announcement I feel we are going to be dealing with the Confederacy for the majority. This upcoming patch feels like it'll be more "Diplomacy with Alphinaud!", starring the WoL and some other NPC (Prob Alisae). Hope it's not a snoozefest like the early 2.x bits, but after 4.1 the dev team really amped up their storytelling.
Fractal Hard probably won't fit in the main story, but I am curious why we're going back there.
Four Lords I'm looking forward to, I enjoyed the Warring Triad arc. Not sure if they're considered primals or just slumbering gods awakened after the fallout with Omega v Shinryu.
The ancestors of the Ruby Princess have been ruling from the Violet Tides palace for generations. She's simply the current ruler of the underwater Raen. The Raen themselves were never forced from the Steppe. They've been living in various areas of Yanxia (as samurai in service to Hein's ancestors), the bottom of the Ruby Sea (they prefer isolationism), and Hingashi (ninja clans) for as long as they can remember. Generally speaking, the Raen tend to assimilate to the culture around them for the sake of harmony while the Xaela stick to their ancestral culture like glue.
XIVDB has all the quest dialogue that has no voiceovers. I still havn't found a good resource for that.
The obligatory informational NPC at Sui-no-Sato claims that the Raen were driven from their ancestral homeland, which would be the steppe (Were she referring to the tribe as a whole), though I suppose she could just be referring to their group which was taking shelter from the wars on the surface.
On a side note, I'm kind of hoping that Yugiri will eventually be allowed back into Sui-no-Sato now that the Garleans are gone, considering that the main reason she got kicked out in the first place was because they were afraid her involvement with Doma would draw the wrong sort of attention to them.
In full honesty I think 4.1 also kind of intended to be the book end of the entire Ul'dah struggle that has been played out since the beginning of 2.0. Nanamo has finally reach a point where she understands what she needs to do in order to move forward as Sultana to be able to deal with the Syndicate, maturing to the point where she no longer needs Raubahn support. Allowing Raubahn to return to his homeland to help them rebuild and Pipin to grow into replacing Raubahn at the Immortal Flames. Honestly at this point I see them moving away from Ul'dah and moving forward to other story points. I think it wrapped everything up in Ul'dah as well as it probably could. Frankly as much as I wasn't against the storypoints. It was definitely becoming tedious after so much of it.
It never sat well with me that Ul'dah received such a disproportionate amount of story focus in comparison to Gridania and Limsa. In particular, a lot of the potential issues with Gridanian society were hand-waved and lessened during the shift from 1.0 to 2.0 whilst much of Ul'dah's problems carried over in full.
At this point, though, I'm more interested in exploring the wider world beyond Eorzea - so 4.2 revolving around the Far East excites me quite a bit.
The SMN level 70 job quest revisits ARF (maybe spoiler)
from a failsafe mechanism by an allagan clone machine to find the best SMN and copy them.
The allagan might did something similar to resonance (or artificial echo) since the job quest sort of imply it, with extra defenses of course after the last one.
That was probably because Gridania's 'problems' were mostly supernatural/metaphysical in form (the whole greenwrath/woodsin thing with the elementals), while Ul'dah's were mostly political (save for that whole raising the dead thing with Warburton) and thus made for much easier implementation (and thus is more believable).
It's also far easier to craft narratives around familiar concepts like political corruptions and conspiracies when it's just dealing withhumanspoken-led societies and not a magocracy dictated by a race of bad-tempered aetheric faeries who are nature personified.
As for 4.2, new info is up on the Lodestone - looks like some ideas from FFXI are now sneaking in. Besides Byakko being the new trial, none other than Tenzen from Chains of Promathia now has a Hydaelyn counterpart. If it turns out he has a katana with the power of a Primal inside it (*cough* Phoenix *cough cough*) I'll eat my Curtana. :p
Also, on the patch artwork, who is that bloke standing next to Cid? I recognize Biggs, Wedge and Jessie, but that guy with the shades I just can't place.
May you elaborate on what you know of Byakko and any other FFXI stuff? I never played it so I’m super curious and excited about 4.2. My first thought when I read 4 lords were the elemental arch fiends.
Well, Byakko along with Seiryu, Suzaku and Genbu were the four so-called 'Sky Gods', four HNMs (High Notorious Monsters) players could fight in 'Sky', the floating citadel of Tul'lia. They were part of the Rise of the Zilart expansion but I can't remember if they ever had any real storyline or lore behind them other than being ancient monsters from the Zilart civilization (I only fought them once with my then linkshell, and they fully deserved the 'HNM' moniker ;)).
As for Tenzen, in a kuponutshell he was a major character of the Chains of Promathia expansion where he was a SAM from the Far Eastern nation that came to the Middle Lands desperate for help as his nation is being consumed by Emptiness, his katana containing the spirit of the avatar (FFXI's summon monsters) Phoenix, which vibrates to alert him when danger is approaching.
Although primarily a protagonist he did end up temporarily as an antagonist in a particularly difficult CoP main story boss fight, but he eventually is made to see sense and by the end of CoP's main story, apologized to the player for his actions. There is far more to his story but more would be a spoiler, but this is his history if you're interested. ;)
Either way, I am very intrigued how his FFXIV counterpart is going to be featured, although he is stated as being part of a legend, so it's presumed that he's now long since dead alas. But I guess we'll find out either way. :)
Really? It doesn't look like him at all (I thought it might have been that chap in the Ivalice quest line - Jenomis I believe his name was? (I haven't done that storyline though as I'm not a raider, so forgive my ignorance).
Either way, as the others next to this guy are all clearly the members of Garlond Ironworks, I doubt it would be Nero as he regards them with disdain (to say nothing of Nero's lingering resentment towards Cid). ;)
Nero is currently working for the Ironworks (Jessie hired him to get back at Cid since she was getting tired of Cid using Ironworks money to fund his personal projects. Nero's apparently getting paid 4/5 of what Cid is getting paid for the Omega job.). Cid, Biggs, and Wedge's reactions to Jessie managing to do that are hilarious. Nero's also not as abrasive as he was in previous patches. There's one point where he compliments Wedge on an engineering job in the Deltascape and everyone else gets minor brain breakage over the idea of Nero admitting someone else did a good job. So yeah, he's one of the more active characters in the Omgea story and will probably be here though the end of it.
Ah, right, that makes sense (I admit I haven't done Omega yet either - as mentioned me and raids.... do not go together, owing to a very bad experience in Labyrinth of the Ancients one time soured my whole attitude toward raiding that I won't go into). Hence my ignorance of that little detail (in hindsight, it makes perfect sense, given that superdeformed SNES-era chocobo from the Omega story (Alpha I believe his name is?) is also in that pic (I admit most of my raid story info comes from second hand sources like the FFWiki so it's bound to not always accurate), so therefore Nero's appearance does ring true.
Anyway, thank you for clarifying that Obsidian and Theodric. :)
From the MSQ preview, it looks like we're going to be dealing with Gosetsu and "Yo"Tsuyu's reintroduction to the narrative.
This could get interesting. Hopefully the trailer doesn't make the plot too predictable...
Doubt that he will have Phoenix in his sword, as that particular primal already does exist in the game as part of the Coil of Bahamut raids.
Also, the game points out that using primal infused objects is a bad thing. According to the lorebook, that's how the 13th shard ultimately fell. To more specific it was about using the power of trapped primal/eikon/whatevers in auracite I believe, but swords sound just as bad.
But I wouldn't be surprised if he's connected to Suzaku.
Finally been about to come back to the game and catch up with the story! Just in time for hints about 4.2 as well. I have missed this place.
Anyhow, I think it is unlikely we will see 4.2 and Yotsuyu be effectively a copy of what happened in 4.1 though I think there might be some similarities. I an see two directions it could go.
Firstly it might involve information Yotsuyu knew. If she knew important information and she has reverted to the mind of a child it might mean we need to find a way to have her recover her memories. It would also explain why she doesn't get executed once she gets there.
Secondly, her return might start causing skeletons to come out of the closet. Doma lived under imperial rule, acquiescing to Imperial direction for a long time. The things that Doma and its people may have allowed to have happen during that time to placate their masters might be something that is dredged up by Yotsuyu's return.
Either way I expect we will learn a lot more about Yotsuyu's past and what it was like before the first rebellion in Doma in 4.2. The other thing I think we will see start to happen is hints on the direction the story is going as far as leading to the next expansion (which I will eat my keyboard if it isn't going to Garlemald).
As for Omega, we will clearly be moving forward. Perhaps we will find out how the Allagans put him on ice or why the restraints aren't working. I have had a feeling from the first part that Omega has made two potential mistakes. Firstly, if his theory holds, he has effectively made himself the target of whatever 'power' to surpass the odds he believe we have. Secondly, I think it has made an error in judgement with Alpha that will somehow end up coming back to Omega's detriment. Clearly he seems to have annoyed the little psudo chocobo.
I wonder if Midgardsormr was the original Shinryu that spawned the legend.
I don't have many thoughts about the four lords. The main thing for me is I kind of hope they aren't primals this time round. I think it would be more interesting otherwise.
Edit: Apparently the Scions are in financial troubles and we have someone wanting to potentially hire the WoL according to the new Dungeon preview. Makes me wonder if this is a side thing or a lead in to whatever is happening in Doma. I can't imagine any of the people we worked with in the Liberation need proof of our abilities. Maybe it is tied to the Four Lords instead of the MSQ? That would certainly be different.
