I Love Healing But Have Bad Habits

I really do! Coming from WoW, the longer global cooldown was offputting, at first. Yet, I've come to appreciate the extra time in provides to make a decision.

But, with that extra time I find myself falling into old "twitch" habits. For example, I don't pause to observe the amount of remaining health of mobs. This has resulted in many miscasts of Aero III and Holy.

The same can be said of my healing. But, what can I do but consciously fight against my ingrained twitch responses?

Have any of you developed habits from other games which are impeding on your healing in FFXIV? I'd like to hear about them!

I have the habit of making whatever I bind to 2 outside the flow of normal rotations, due to that being where I put travel powers in City of Heroes. And I never rearrange my HUD.

I tend to zone out and not pay attention to dps.

When you make a twitch response, it is an actual response to something that is occurring in game. The first thing I would do is figure out what conditions trigger the response.

In the best-case scenario, it could be solved by developing a new trigger that has its own merits plus overrides the problem one.

I found healing in pve really slow paced, but in pvp i need to stay focus 100% of time, i tend to get distracted for various reasons in any case

I have no bad habits. I am a perfect snowflake who makes casters wish they had my rock-throwing DPS. Other healers also wish they had my green-number throughput. You flawed mortals should bow your head in awe. Bow it. Right now.

Being WHM I felt the fault of buffs like those on RO's priest. Also found that the few buffs were very short (besides Protect, of course) and took me some time to get used to the (way) shorter buffs time. And cure has cast time, tetra a long cooldown... =(

Basically I had to learn again how to heal. Healing here is totally different from what I was used to it. And sometimes I let buffs fall down.

I don't have any from other games, but I do have one from this one: I get way into DPS and forget to heal sometimes. It's especially bad if I've changed jobs and have been DPS the last few runs.

I'm sure a lot of healers can relate. I've been guilty of going nuts with Holy, a time or three. ;)

I tend to forget about my DoTs when healing bigger groups, especially in stuff like Rabanastre. It's been a hard problem to solve because it's pretty easy for me (as a former WoW raid guild healing leader) to tunnel on what the hell alliance B is doing and if they need healing help instead of on the fact that there's no healing required in my alliance so maybe I should stick a DoT back up.

Well, Tridus, I would not necessarily call that a bad habit. ;)

my habit is good but also bad in a way i guess.

i dont like seeing anyone in my party fall below 70% of their max hp, every time, doesn't matter if iam dying or inside aoe, i just instinctively heal them.

on one hand my guild and other compliment me a lot for this "safe healer" style, on other hand this habit give me a lot of trouble on 8 man party because i tend to heal everyone and because of that my heal often overlapping with the 2nd healer.

It's good and bad. :) It does mean I'm aware pretty quickly when another alliance needs help, but it also distracts from what I could be doing (hi dots!).

spamming keys. I've picked up this habit to mostly compensate for the lag, especially in other games like Ragnarok Online or multiplayers, and at times I know I tend to overheal or double-cast here. I'm now mainly using a controller but I can't shake it off :P

Without question it's tunnel vision.

In casual content, this is especially true with an over-geared tank. I get so used to keeping them up with regen, that when heals are actually needed, I'm totally zoned into the mobs. I know every healer is guilty of this at one point or another, which helps me feel better about it :p

In harder content, it happens when an elimination mechanic is present in a fight I am still learning. I become so focused on not getting eliminated from the fight that I am not tuned into everything else that is happening on the field. That's not the biggest problem though. The biggest problem is I STILL fail the mechanic despite tunneling in on it. I am simply thinking about it too much, instead of just performing like I do in familiar content.

Sometimes I tunnel. I need high deeps yo!

Other than that? I might be too stingy with my Cures. I never use Cure, only Cure II.

i just remember, as range class i tend to get close to melee range despite being range.

This. Used to happen a lot to me but I've mostly gotten away from it happening unless the tank is of the wet paper variety. Now I usually just focus on the tank's HP bar while spamming the Holy button. Once I see them dropping I throw in a Cure II or Tetra, and I try to save Assize till the end of the Holy spam.

As a tank, I notice pretty much every healer feels the need to run ahead of the tank and turn around to heal. This is annoying because it can pull patrols. The irony is, I find myself doing the same thing when I heal >_> I guess it’s just easier to see the tank from the other side

Its not like i usually forget to heal... usually, i just forget for a moment i'm a healer because HOLYHOLYHOLYHOLY
At least no tank ever died when that happened, even without the use of Bene...
Because i try not to overspam holy if the tank has big pulls and NEEDS the healing,t hen i try to spread the stuns out before they become immune.

But Holy... is just... so much fun
