Is this a good computer?

Thinking about getting this new computer to play FFXIV. Can you guys tell me if this is a good purchase?

It looks like a good deal to me but I'm no computer expert.

yes, but

the 8 GB memory is bare minimum. you'll be fine as long as you just play ffxiv, and discord's fine too, but if you try multitasking, you may have problems (for example, running two games at once)

also, you have to think towards the future. if you're comfortable installing more memory later to bring it up to 16 gb, then no problem. i did a quick search but wasn't able to confirm whether you can even upgrade the memory. good luck!

okay, i checked the ffxiv requirements and 3 gb is minimum, 8 gb recommended. so if you only play final fantasy, no problem. but if you plan on playing any other games, i feel 8 gb is minimum

Looks like a pretty solid machine and should do perfectly fine for running FF14. I would add more ram at some point in the future as mentioned but that computer will open some doors gaming wise. If you don't know how to check the kind of ram it has just take too a computer shop and they can tell you. There is also plenty of videos on youtube that can help you become more computer savy. :D

Hmm, the processor is a little dated, but it should handle FFXIV without any trouble. The ram is, what I would consider in "starter mode," as you pretty much will want to upgrade to 16+ down the road. I'm kinda iffy on the 3gb graphics card. That just seems a little low to me; and I'm fairly sure that with only 3gb graphics and 8gb system memory, you will be running with your graphics setting somewhere in the middle, and pushing 50-60fps at best.

I know it takes a bit more money, but future-proofing yourself when it comes to getting a new gaming rig is ALWAYS a good idea. Computer tech advances so quickly that lower end machines will get left in the dust a lot sooner than most people would think. Before buying the Wal-Mart Wonder 'Puter, try taking a look at a pro PC retailer. A good one that I've reccomended to some of my friends is www.ibuypower.com.

I'm not sure but I checked reviews on other sites and it said the processor is actually very new. Also, FFXIV's native fps is 60, any higher than that and there are problems (search reddit to find the issues).Just want to avoid confusing things here. 50-60 fps is not low at all, it's the fps the game runs best.

Have you considered building your own gaming pc? It's really not that hard these days and there are a lot of resources online on how to do it even for people with no prior knowledge. The big bonus being you get not only more machine for your money you get better parts as well. Most pre-built computers cut corners on a number of the components like the mother board and psu.

The CPU is alright for gaming purposes, we're not sure if OP wants to go full hardcore or just a functional PC for their purposes. It also depends on what's their budget and work around it, although I agree that picking the parts yourself is almost always the best option. Also, even though the graphic card also should be alright, I think that replacing it for the 6GB version or jumpting straight to the 1070 would be a better choice and more future proof.

I'd like to ask if OP wants to play something else with that rig and, if that's the case, work around the most demanding game. What's their monitor, the intended resolution (I'm expecting 1080p or so). If it's for XIV alone, it's gonna work just fine.

Wow thank you guys for your responses. The only game I play is FFXIV. I'm not a hard core gamer. I thought about building my own but couldn't get it down to around this price. My main use for the computer is for school (writing papers) and playing FFXIV. I already have FFXIV on the PS4 and since I was getting school computer I wanted to find somthing that could play the game too.

That CPU is absolutely fine for gaming, if you're not interested in streaming or recording there's very little reason to go bonkers on the CPU, you'll generally see better returns investing in a more capable graphics card instead.

And on that note, regarding that graphics card, the 3gb 1060 is absolutely fine for stock games at 1080p, but you'll quickly outgrow it if you've got any interest in modding games such as Fallout or GTA. IMHO a 1070 is a better card to aim for even if you have to hold off on the purchase for a little bit. As others have said, it's just the better purchase in the long haul.

Also not sure what this 'ffxiv doesn't work well above 60fps' thing is? I aim for 100fps with my X34A and it's an absolute treat.

Don't sweat it about the ram, it's an easy upgrade down the line and with ram prices as they are currently, that's something that you're likely better off doing at a later date. Again, it's money better off spent on the GPU.

One luxury I'm amazed that no one else has mentioned tho: An SSD is literally the biggest single quality of life upgrade you can make to any PC, and they aren't expensive anymore. If you really aren't keen on doing any tinkering yourself, consider getting a build that's got one out of the box. You can thank me later.

Only spotted this thread just now, but you're right. I moved from a 5400RPM drive to an SSD. Load times dropped from about 2 minutes (they seriously were that bad for me, worse than Sonic 06!), to about 15 seconds. It's such a breath of fresh air!

that computer is just fine for ffxiv. a ps4 has 8 gb of memory. if you continue to play ffxiv and similar games, you won’t need to upgrade (there’s tons of games you can play with that computer)

an ssd does make a big difference when you’re loading, but it makes little to no difference when you’re playing the game. you won’t be any worse of than ps4

Spec wise it should run FFXIV without issue. However given history with HP in the past selling generations of the same computer without addressing hardware defects I personally wouldn't buy it. Two that come to mind is a desktop series with defective motherboard that would stop recognizing drives connected to it and the series of laptops that would generate enough heat to cause the motherboard to delaminate and allow the components connected to it to peel off. Both cases HP continued to make and sell updated versions of the product while still using the defective component.

I'd research not just that model but the series that HP belongs to beforehand to see if people have been reporting issues with it's hardware.

Yup, an SSD is life changing. There is no turning back after getting one. I noticed the difference specially with hunts back in the day. Otherwise I'd sit on the loading screen as I read on the shout chat "ded" ; ;

This is wrong. Not only RAM has virtually no effect on FPS, but I run a similar setup as to what OP posted (except I use a 6GB 1060)and I can reach 90 fps+ in most areas - in situations like instances reaching over 100 depending on what's on screen, running at 1080p max settings. The difference between a 6GB and a 3GB isn't big enough for OP to have to drop to medium settings, specially since at 1080p max FFXIV sits at around 1400MB VRAM usage.

That said, I would definitely save a bit more for a better card unless OP is adamant they're only gonna play XIV and don't want to go above 1080p.

I think it's worth mentioning that framerate above the 60 mark will only benefit those who have high refresh rate displays, or else it will make the game look completely jittery.

Personally I don't trust nvidia. Too much bloat comes from software outside their hardware stuff.
I had a 7 years old pc for 3.0 with 8gb, upgraded to 16 gb with new pc for 4.0.
It's the most important upgrade, the fancy graphics above 720p only worth it if you use 60+" screen.
Pretty sure the screen itself will cost more than the entire pc.
