So, how exactly will the new BRD feature work?

Will we be pressing keys to make notes a-g? Or will there be a sheet music writer? I really hope it doesn't mean players can upload soundfiles that just play on command. Would ruin my immersion having to listen to people play their edgy music in game if I am nearby.

Looks like they went with a GW2 style of music play. I prefer MMLs personally, but the GW2 style is fun as well.

As an aside, some of the 'musicians' in GW2 were absolutely ridiculous. You could play by hand, which of course takes a decent amount of practice, but then ArenaNet also allowed the use of outside-macros to play the music as well. The snobbery against the macro user was insane. People demanding refunds because their fun was somehow ruined, and claiming the horrid macro-users were stealing their thunder amongst other things. The forums really had some entertaining threads back in the day.


I can only hope that if XIV's system is really as similar as it appears to be, and if people do find a way to use macros, that we don't devolve to that level of asshattery.

I wonder if we can play two and three notes at the same time.(chords) Also wonder if it can be whole/half/quarter/etc

That was my first thought too. Single notes are great, but if chords can happen, and notes can be held, then that's quite a bit different than just doodling around. Definitely excited to see how this goes. :3

I just want something like in LoTRO where you had entire bands playing together. I know at present the lag makes it near impossible to harmonize according to Yoshi P., but I can dream.

I’ll probably suck at it. Like I do with real instruments.

You'll set notes on your hotbar, a range of 3 octaves last I recall, and manually press them to make music. You won't be able to macro them.

I really hope it syncs well so I can make a band. Look out for "Bizmarck Boys" coming to a stage near you.

They do intend to add more instruments later, like the flute they already have animations for. For now though, just the lyre.

If it works just like the GW2 setup (which I am very familiar with) then yes, you can macro them. Just... through other means.;)

I'm really bad at playing music, so whatever the system, I'll fail at it. But I'm looking forward to seeing all these people playing songs in the major cities, even forming bands once more instruments are added ( * - * )
Eorzea is going to become more lively.

EDIT: Nora raises a good point in her reply. I hadn't considered this, but people could easily spam or troll with this system. Hopefully, a function to disable the sound will be added as well, as she suggested.

I imagine a new "Perfrom sounds on/off" will be added to the sound config.

Back when Dragoons had that spammy move, I had to turn off all player noises.

When I started listening to the Twitch feed, I thought they were going to play, "Smoke on the water" :D

It would be nice if somehow these can be worked into macros, preferably with in-game means. I know Anet made an official statement confirming they were OK with the use of out-side macro programs for the sole purpose of music playing, but I can't imagine SE would do the same. Time will tell :)

I'd imagine SE would be fine with it since, like in GW2, it wouldn't impact gameplay or offer anything advantageous. Which is the reason why Anet was okay with it. Things like AutoHotKey are harmless when used in that fashion and do nothing that would negatively impact the game. If they turn their heads away from parsers they'd likely do the same here. Long as people don't bring it up ingame and harass people about it.

Either way, I'm looking forward to this feature. Official stance or not. I agree with having an ingame way to macro would be nicer though.

I must say, SE's approach for these things seems to be "Don't be a dick with them and you'll be fine." - like for example if you use any of the tools to harass someone, then you'll be in trouble, but just for example using the parser for your own personal development, yeah you're not being a dick about it, you're fine.

Yoshida was using macros for individual notes, I don't see what could prevent you from using multiple notes in one macro, the only problem is the <wait.#> command only accepting whole seconds.
