4.1 npc text scaling

Before this patch, we had the ability to click on the dialogue box, and resize it each time we logged in. For those of us with bad eyes, this was a blessing. Don't know if it's an error or what, but we're unable to resize that tiny text box now. I don't want to start my msq because I can't see what they're saying!

Please help us, fix this!

agreed. no idea why they removed the contextual menu to increase the size.
only way now is to scale the whole hud up but that just makes everything big which is no good.

Really struggling with this at the moment.
Hope SE sees the issue and fixes it.

It was annoying even that we had to resize it every single time we logged in and it wasn't an option in our HUD to begin with (hinthint SE do this?). But to remove it is kind of crippling to the ones that can't read itty bitty text...

Just gonna keep bumping this so it doesn't get lost in 75 threads about the same thing x.x

How can I play if I can't see what they're saying? T_T
But making everything giant is so hideous and clutters my screen. Bugger.

Yeah, now it's either sit REALLY close to the tv anytime I have to read something or change everything so big it's a flippin mess... not to mention changing that in sys config unfortunately is an account-wide change... real nice for my husband when he plays cause he can see just fine normally :/

Wait, you could adjust the NPC dialogue boxes before? I did not know this!! I've had to sit up closer to the TV every time I wanted to read what was being said...

Well hopefully they'll fix it so we can once again do this, cause I really hate having to sit so close to the tv just to read what's going on ><

Tonberries in general brighten my day... Except when I'm being stabbed by one, that is. But in any case, yes I would definitely like to be ale to use that feature.

Display Settings

The option "Enlarge system UI" has been added under "User Interface Size."
This setting is only available when User Interface Size is set to 100%.
Enabling this setting will allow players to restore the size of UI elements such as the main menu and chat log window to that of patch 3.57.
Restoring UI elements to patch 3.57 sizes.

1. Under User Interface Size select 100% and check the box Enlarge System UI.
2. Under Default UI Size set Default Size to 140% and apply changes to all UI components.

It's posted with pictures here in the patch notes, but it's a quirk with the resolution changes that came with Stormblood.

That enlarges everything to enormous, and also something changed in sys config affects every character on the account, which is then unfair to my husband with perfectly fine vision. All other components of the UI can be resized individually, as did the chat bubble until this morning.

I believe this is just for PS4 players. I cannot say if this was removed for PS4 players or not. But what I can say as a PC player, and as the OP has stated, that we can no longer change the UI scaling for the NPC Dialogue Box. You used to be able to right-click the box, and while holding down right-click, left-click the options to scale to a difference percentage (and I believe this was the same for PS4 with the virtual mouse mode). Now when you right-click the box, nothing happens.

What I propose is that the devs add the dialogue box to the HUD layout menu to be tweaked in there, along with everything else HUD related, and call it a day :)

Ah, okay. I didn't realize it was an exclusive a PS4 thing as the process on consoles repaired the text size issues we were having.

The way OP describe it sounded like a dead ringer to what I saw before the fix as my personal solution before 4.1 was to enlarge other UI elements manually and do the single chat text trick, since the text chat remained seperate.

Since so many other UI elements have been broken up and the UI can be even larger, is it possible NPC text is just really buried now? Otherwise, the option may have been lost in the shuffle.

Unfortunately, the dialogue boxes have never been in the UI settings, which is why they added the general system UI scaling for PS4. It just makes EVERYTHING look awful (and you have to completely redo all UI elements after), so it's not worth using. Scooting closer to the TV is a better solution.

I'm really hoping someone finds the option magically buried somewhere. :( Or the CMs/devs take note again and add back the option specifically for those boxes.

I don't agree since the repair fixed everything I was having issues with, but EVERYTHING was jacked up at SB's launch, so I was only able to return to how I wanted it to look pre-4.0 after the config let me do the mass fix. YMMV, but it's something to try.

This change is going to make me quit this game. It was passable before, the story dialog didn't have an entry in the UI config and didn't scale when you applied it to all UI settings. It really highlighted the fact that SE has a history of not employing competent coders, and this change only further proves the point. There was a post I saw saying the reset after logout was going to be looked at, but apparently they had zero understanding of the actual issue. The 200% scaling option doesn't do anything different than 150% scaling either. I cannot read the text at my resolution without getting a heavy dose of monitor radiation. It's unfathomable to me that 1080p+ resolutions are supported without story text scaling.

I have my PC hooked up to my 4K TV and I would have the monitor scaling set to 200%, then the default UI set to 120% of that, then I would change each UI element separately if I wanted it smaller/larger than the default I set. And the workaround for the dialogue box was to change it with right-click at the beginning of logging in. But now it's been completely removed, and there is no way to scale it to my knowledge :(. I am now playing at my friend's house because I literally cannot play the game on my TV as I can't read the text without being very close to the screen.

This chat box has been a problem since 4.0 (or even before?). No idea how it is this difficult. On top of it, trying to find a different way to make it larger threw off my entire UI and I spent half the night fixing it.

Having to keep resizing it on login was annoying, but it's better than not having the option at all. I have 20/20 vision, but I sit back from my TV enough that I struggle to read it. I hope it's just a bug and they'll fix it.

Yea, the default is just way off for Ps4 TV viewing. I was looking my mind trying to right click last night.

Pump up since it's really important.

Any updates from the devs yet, or is it in any official bug list or what have you?

What is even the point of purposefully taking out that feature...?

If it's "working as intended" then there must be something else in the menus to fix this.

I don't know if that is also on PC, but "Enlarge system UI" only enlarge the NPC text and the cross-menu, without touching the other settings

Hi, I recall seeing something in the 4.1 patch notes, stating a new feature that UI elements could now be configured separately. Now I haven't looked at this in detail, so just a general question to see if this new feature covers text boxes?

If not, then a bit surprised the original feature was taken out with nothing specific to the text boxes to replace it.

The problem is that is also blows up the names of characters/npcs/minions/etc, so your screen is a clustermess of humongous names. Then your only option is to hide all the names. I'd really like to not have to do that just to be able to read the dialogues. There was no reason to take away the individual resizing of the chat text...

If they think it's working as intended then they clearly either don't know how it worked before or don't know how it's working now. I set my UI to 150% and scaled down everything to where I wanted it. Text in the dialog boxes is still tiny. Before you could right click them and scale it up to 140% manually, which made it nice and huge for sitting back away from the TV. Now no matter what setting you choose it's either tiny or slightly less tiny, but the text size itself never gets to that big 140% level.

There needs to be an option that scales the text boxes and ONLY the text boxes.

Man, at this rate this game is going to make me need glasses unless they let us resize those dialogue boxes lol

enlarging everything wouldnt be a big deal, if there were more options to make UI elements smaller.
currently you pick 60%
80%
or 90%
there is no 70% nor smaller than 60%

(which, i wish there was.)

Too hard to handle, yet the option used to exist. This baffles me. Their UI devs seem to be incredibly disorganized.

PC version doesn't have that.

Having the same issue as everyone else, just submitted a bug report and recommend all of you to do the same. They need to start listening to us on this issue

It really feels like they went out of their way to create the smallest NPC text boxes they could get away with. For a game where over 90% of the dialogue isn't voiced and has to be read (speaking of ARR, not sure what the expansions are like), it is such a bizarre design decision to have such tiny text boxes. Every option I've tried in the menus blows up the rest of the UI as well to the point that the UI takes over the entire screen, which I don't want or need.

I mean there's just no reason the text box needs to be that tiny. I'll submit a bug report, but not sure to expect much. It's just a shame, because I've otherwise really appreciated how customizable the UI in the game is.

It barely helps on PS4. It was bigger before the patch on both plattforms.
