Well they're in Japan so their work hours are gonna be a bit different from yours.
I think it would be pretty hard to find a time of day that wouldn't inconvenience someone somewhere though.
I sympathize but no matter what time they bring the servers up someone somewhere is going to be inconvenienced. There is literally nothing that can be done to make sure everyone in the world has free time IRL to login at server up.
Supporting jobless people lol....sigh when you think you've seen everything something more outrageous pops up.
I normally request time off in advance or use paid time...if not I just take my laptop and login. Depends by job I guess.
Life isn't fair dude. Not everyone can even log on fast enough to get a plot they want. People will complain because 'They couldn't log in fast enough' or 'this isn't fair I was at work' or whatever. Good luck to all the non passive aggressive people towards SE for getting a house plot they want.
If S-E wanted to, they could disable Shirogane housing on a data centre basis, and then activating it at an ideal time per region.
Why they chose not to do this is baffling.
They let you know we'll in advance when the servers would go back up. They've cancelled auto demolition due the hurricanes, and they also stated that the servers will all go back online simultaneously to make things fair for everyone.
You should be thanking them for trying to be so considerate of a playerbase that spans worldwide instead of chastising them for not being able to cater to your own time zone. You probably should have taken time off to accommodate your housing needs, and if you absolutely can't, then you're just SoL.
If it matters that much to you then you should have thought ahead. I predicted the patch would be on the 10th over a month ago and I asked for the day off. I work full time, but I will be there to grab a house when the servers come up.
Saying SE supports "jobless people" is simply childish and untrue.
The reality of the matter is that there's a hefty portion of people per data center who are not from that very region. While probably due to laziness more than this, I do like to think they are aware of this reality and simply go with the most straight forward method given that, like said before, they have no true way to please everyone. Even when theoretically it should be solid, like what you suggested, reality paints a different picture.
I mean they could do that but having the entire server camp at the signposts seems like a good way to generate mountains of salt. Signpost wars does sound funny though. They could lock people out of the wards entirely but then the housing wards will probably lag/potentially crash from the entire server trying to zone into them at once. This would only happen on highly populated servers but low pop servers probably won't sell out very fast anyways even with the time being really early.
Dropping the patch on a single day's notice would have been unfair. Not asking for a few hours off with over 2 weeks notice is just poor planning, friend.
I wish I could feel some what slighted by this news, but having recently made the switch from World of Warcraft to FF I haven't the foggiest clue what type of impact having a house in this game makes. Does having a house basically allow for online peeps I don't know to come hang out with me? Does having a house offer some form of in game benefits for raiding, or doing dungeons? Is it more for show, a place to decorate, and place all my awards, trophy's and Accolades I have acquired over the course of playing Final Fantasy?
It's basically a place for you and your friends to chill, inside or outside of the house. They are built like neighborhoods, where you can run around and check out other people's houses as well. You can decorate the outside and inside as well with things you craft yourself, or buy from the market. It's most definitely a place you can display your "trophies" (crafted items using materials only gained from raid bosses for example!). However it has no real impact on anything you do in the game if you don't own a house! It's just for funsies. :)
Edit: Almost forgot! Welcome to the game. I also came from WoW. It's better over here, trust me. ;)
If you're new and worried about housing, they have a second option in apartments. Each ward has a large building with large, single rooms you can purchase and freely decorate. They have a chocobo stable parked at the entrance for tenants to use, and inside is a lobby space with a few shopkeeps and a moogle mail npc.
Really, though, having a house/apartment IS the trophy. It has utilities like the aforementioned stables allowing for faster chocobo training, and gardening for certain materials. It really is more a place of personal expression as a player and a convenient gathering place for Free Companies and other social circles.
All in all, it's mostly vanity and a much needed money sink.
I didn't read every post, but really? The patch cycles are always the same and the time for completion is always the same as well. The times for scheduled maint and the day a new patches arrive is given well enough in advance that if need be you can take off from work.
A theory being that if you do this when the majority of people are online the server will not be able to cope with the large numbers of people trying to teleport in. At least if its a quiet time of day people are more likely to come in smaller waves.
It does suck having to work when patches go up - maybe if you have a laptop you could tether it to your cell and log in at lunch?
I'd love an apartment in Shirogane, though I still have a bit of a ways to go to even get that far story-wise. And that's not even to speak of ranking up enough in my GC and gathering the gil needed for even just that lol.
They were meant to be long term goals I believe...so grinding it day after day was not the intent of those achievements.
I have been working on Astrope since they added it for example and I was doing a full time college program at the time and I worked.
After all this time has passed since they added it I am now sitting at over 1500 out of 2000. So almost there.
I mean anyone who has no work or school will always beat others to everything in any game. They'll level faster, they'll gear faster, everything faster. So it isn't like a long term goal is "supporting jobless people" it just...everything in games like this takes people different amounts of time.
I mean when I was in college and working I missed out on some raiding progression I couldn't stay up late or go as many days of the week. I mean everyone's lives are different so some have more free time and some have less and it fluctuates throughout your life for a vast amount of reasons. You can't really compare how much time you have to invest to other players. Just play how you have fun playing; like for example I joined a more casual static that runs only two days a week instead of four. I don't clear content as fast as others, but I have to work with what free time I have and that is life.
I mean I'll probably never get the Centurio Tiger, and even though I am a mount collector....I mean I am not mad about it personally. I can slowly work towards it over time and maybe I will. It is what it is. I feel SE may have overdid it a bit, but they want people to play and honestly there are very few things in this game that are long term goals. A few isn't a bad thing especially since mounts are purely aesthetic and give no advantage over other players.
I just plan on not sleeping on patch day, I will just go to work tired and cat nap on break, imma get me a plot.
Having your own plot basically makes a lot of things convenient for you, but just about everything they offer, you can still do one way or another. As an example, on a daily basis you likely access a summoning bell, pick up your mail, maybe take or place an item or two in your FC company chest, sell your junk to an NPC, stable and feed your chocobo, etc. When doing so, you are here there and everywhere or spending a lot of time at your FC house doing these things. Having your own plot gives you access to all those things, a place to log out, and a place to port to for cheap. You also get access to your own garden, an aquarium, and several other very convenient and neat features.
It's a HUGE investment though. Even a cottage will run you several million, and I am no too sure how much apartments run for. But either way, you will spend a lot of gil and time on the house you choose in order to not only get access to all those benefits, but get your home to look and behave the way you want it to. For those who can't afford their own place, or when all plots are taken, they don't need to worry much. Like I said, you still have access to just about everything they offer assuming you have an FC, and even if you didn't it won't prevent leveling/MSQ/raid progression or anything like that.
you can buy a house irl. jobless people can't
There's a big difference between long term goals and unachievable goals for a "reasonable" play time, the long cooldown of hunts means if you only play a few hours per day the game will close before you get it, and you can't do anything about it other than being online more time doing nothing but waiting for hunt windows, no ifs or buts will change that fact, it's completely out of your control unlike other long term goals.
Then some of the long term goals that are within your control require you to spend nearly all your in game time doing only that and nothing else.
I sort of understand people who want long term goals, but at the same time those achievements aren't really reasonable for the majority.
Housing isn't needed to enjoy the MSQ. I'd rather have a house in real life than in a game. Besides, it's not needed in order to play the game as intended. It's a want, not a need.
People will complain about the time servers come upPeople will complain about Housing
- I am at work, how dare you support jobless people!
- I am asleep after a long third shift!
- I won't be able to log in because of prime time and there will be a massive queue!
- Someone was spamming me and I couldn't buy the plot!
- The Plot I wanted had already been bought!
- My computer didn't load fast enough and I didn't get in!
- So many people went for housing I crashed!
Someone is always going to lose. This is a game yet people seem to have forgotten that. If getting a house is the only way you'll have fun in this game then I suggest looking at other games who allow players to buy their own plots (Wildstar perhaps?)
INB4 - My FC needs a house!
A house is nice but not a requirement of an FC. You can still do your PVE without a house. You can still do your RP without a house. You can still do your PVP without a house.
This is more them launching the servers at the usual time...you know, the time they usually do on patch day, and less about catering to a certain group of people. There just happens to be houses coming with this patch. So, either plan in advance or get up super early and hype yourself up with a ton of coffee. Pretty much all there is to it. We've known that Shirogane was coming for awhile now.
Why don't they just have 1 week before the patch when people can go to the plot they want and register a bid? When you bid, you all pay the same full price and the gil will be held by the system. During maintenance, the server randomly draws one bid for each plot and the plot is given to the lucky bidder. When server opens, gil for failed bids are returned in the mail.
Also let people see how many bids have already been registered for each plot, during the bidding week, and allow people to retract on their bids at most once every 18 hours without gil penalty. Each service account can only make one bid per server.
It's way better than making time zone the determining factor and becoming a disruption to real life schedule.

Obviously, the even better solution is to stop this nonsence with limited availability.
Wow OP, people who can afford to get Shirogane housing are jobless?
You need to troll harder or learn how to take a day off.
... Pretty "sour grapes" there. Patch time is known well in advance. People with jobs are planning already. Set an an alarm. Call in "sick" if it's that important to you. I'm betting it's gonna be a DC fest even if you are there for it.
Surely it's fine for most people with jobs (I took a day off along with a few friends). People with school have a better cause for complaint since they can't do that without deceit.
The idea to allow bids would be far more stressful! If you really want a house would you have to place multiple bids for hundreds of millions of gil, then if you were picked multiple times relocation would be chaos. It would allow resellers to be even sneakier. First come first served is fair, even if the actual day is gong to be rough.
Just take a day off or get a friend to. Most non-solo FCs should have at least one person who can.
I really like this idea for whenever they open new wards. I think they could just let any plots that are sold or demolished behave as they do now, but I like the idea of changing it from a contest of who has the better connection/hardware/schedule (none of which feel like something that should actually be a 'part' of this game, at least to me) and turning it into RNG. Less stress; just bid and cross your fingers.
Apartments don't get demo'd if you can't log in for months, and give you access to some of the housing utilities like the chocobo stable.
Seriously, they are instanced, unlimited, cheaper, and are yours forever.
Use them.
I know loads of people who booked a day off work or swapped a shift with a co-worker...so it's not like it's impossible for everyone who has a job to make time for the launch of the patch.
And for some reason it hasn't occurred to you that the game is Japanese so launch times will be aimed for their convenience, not for those in an entirely different time zone.
bruh just call in dead. Works every ti.... wait a minute.
