Which characters are your favourite?

I know, I know. One of those threads. Yet I'll try and make this one a little different and split it into various categories since it's a pretty loaded question and we're dealing with a very large cast.

So, first things first here's the categories:

- Major Characters: (City State Leaders, prominent antagonists, major Scions and anyone with a large amount of screentime.)

- Minor Characters: (NPC's that are only present for a short while, or are fairly obscure in the grand scheme of things.)

- Primals/Eikons: (Pretty straightforward

- Job/Class Trainers: (Specifically those that help train you directly.)

Simple enough, eh? I'll even be generous and encourage people to pick three for each category! Feel free to elaborate as to why you like them, though that's not necessary. You can just list their names if you so desire. I'll reply to the thread myself a little later once a few people have had a chance to post! :)

Major Characters:

Y'shtola - she's knowledgeable, jaded, and tough as nails. She has no major weaknesses or faults, save her present disability and an even more mortal peril from her use of personal aether to sustain herself. All of which gives her character a powerful presence in the story. If she wasn't the Scion's foremost field agent, I daresay there would be no excuse for her not to take charge of the group.

Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn - Don't let the ample bosom fool you, because the Admiral is a force to be reckoned with when she puts her mind to it. Frankly, Square Enix has squandered her character's presence to the odd cameo - at least compared to Rauhban and his son Pipin. Coming from a rough and tumble background, Merlwyb can be ruthless in her own right compared to her contemporaries in the other City-States. Merlwyb showed off her stature as a warlord of the sea when at the end of the lvl 50 Armorer Questline she ordered two soldiers to stand in newly forged armor whilst their companion rained steel blows upon them, and as the Admiral further tested the armor with some well aimed gunshots. Any other leader, their soldiers would have surely balked. But if the Admiral says so then you ask "how much armor and where do you want me to stand?"

Lastly, the romantic mythos surounding Merlwyb and the mysterious Mistbeard is also one of the game's most discrete and lovely tales of romance.

Minor Characters:

Franz the Fair - Don't know him? He's Ul'dah's resident gladiatorial #$%@^boy! I jest. He's got the adoration of the crowd, the love of many (married) women, runs with a cool team, and we get to beat the snot out of him in the Paladin Stormsblood Storyline. And if you bother to deliver mail for him then you find out he actually has depth as a character. Frankly, if you want to do this section properly, do the Moogle Mail Questline and you will run into every minor character who could interest you & get some story on them.

Elde - She is a merchant you work with in the HW Leatherworker storyline. She's compassionate, driven, and business savvy. Whether she is marketing her leather goods using a bard's patronage and songs, meeting the needs of her customers or breaking into new market places, her quests truly felt like an enterprise. And in the end she said she would use our name as a brand of leather goods, which I found flattering.

Inspector Briardien - I can't help but respect the guy, and I am always disappointed when I choose an incorrect answer to one of his queries because I didn't take the time to read his question and deduce the answer properly. He is one of the few npc who expect any kind of awareness of the quest from the player, and it is satisfying getting a nod of approval from him. His character is fully formed by the time he has seen the last of Hildebrand, and our reunion during the Scholasticate Questline was quite memorable.

Primal/Eikon:

Garuda - I don't know why exactly. Partly the sexy factor, and also the fact that her maniacal nature was so fleshed out as to be almost endearing. Her origin story is also fascinating, that her worship stems from ancient times when winged Ixal were used as aerial troops by the Allagan Empire and were lead by a beautiful female commander as part of the Garuda Company. They remember and revere this commander even to present day in the form of Garuda. If I had to get tempered by a Primal, it would be her.

Ravana - A primal that exults in battle! Not to desperate prayers has this insectoid battlemaster been drawn to the realm of men, just a desire for conquest by his worshipers. Ravana's enthusiasm and apparent code of honor make his character memorable, and his theme music is quite well done. It's a shame he is little more than a one-stop attraction, we could use a cool character like him on the road.

Job Trainer:

Stephanivien de Haillenarte - Machinist Trainer - The man is a bit of an eccentric, though not so much as to be annoying. His drive to industrialize and modernize Ishgard is commendable. Here is a man willing to stand up to tradition when he knows he is right, and fight dragons to prove it. Helps that I am a House Haillenarte fan, likely because Laniaitte de Haillenarte (Steph's sister) is quite a lovely character. And if Emmanellain de Fortemps doesn't prance off I think I'll make do with some impromptu target practice. Fear not, I'll just aim for any floppy hats in season... on his head. Don't worry, the hat will fly but lord dandy will be fine. Hey I rhymed!

Geva Storke - Leahterworker Trainer - Sure she berates you, and yet I can't help but find this slightly titillating. The guild quests eventually reveal a very interesting character in her. And even though this is supposed to be the kind of questline where you solve everyone's problems by using [insert] craft skill, Geva goes a long way to making it all feel satisfying.

E-Sumi-Yan - Conjurer Trainer - At first I was confused at first as to why I was taking orders from a kid, so I'm glad my character was on top of things and knew what the heck a Padjal was. Needless to say, this learned trainer introduced me to the world of Eorzea and set me on the path. As a no-nonsense character who deserves respect, E-Sumi-Yan's guidance of the Conjurer's Guild and Gridania serve as a solid bedrock for the City-State. While he may not be a leader beyond the Conjurer's Guild, E-Sumi-Yan is still a prominent and capable administrator.

Major Characters:
Y'shtola, she's the cutest of the scions and also smart and actually useful.
Estinien, brave and badass
Yugiri, awesome Ninja, calm and collected yet passionate, honorable and caring

Minor Characters:
Godbert Manderville. total badass and hilarious as fuck

Primal:
Ramuh, old, wise and not really evil.
Shiva, just gonna say <3 (don't want to spoil anythng)
Job Trainer:
Heustienne <3 <3 dragoon bae. beautiful, powerful and probably the bravest npc thus far.

Eikon: Shiva, Susano and Lakshmi

- Major Characters:

1. Hien. He's pretty great, and currently in the top spot as my favourite character at the moment. He's handsome and charismatic yet intelligent and duty bound without being overly formal or stuck up. He's pretty friendly, too, and accomplishes stuff on his own without the Warrior of Light doing everything for him. My only regret is that Lyse, rather than Hien ended up being the 'face' of 4.0.

2. Varis. He has only shown up a handful of times so far yet each appearance has caused much speculation - and he's the current leader of one of Hydaelyn's most powerful forces. By all accounts, he is also an excellent tactician and his friendship with a soldier such as Regula suggests that there's more to him than meets the eye. He's one of the biggest wildcards at the moment.

3. Y'shtola. She strikes me as the most level headed of the Scions at the moment. She's also the 'face' of FFXIV in certain crossover capacities so it pleases me that she isn't another Minfilia or Lyse.

- Minor Characters:

1. Regula. His friendship with the Emperor of Garlemald is touching and he proves to be quite the honourable soldier. It helps that he's heavily inspired by General Leo and sounds a bit like Gabranth!

2. Charibert. Not because I necessarily like him but simply because the fight against him in The Vault is so memorable and intense. Or at least it was back before the adjustments...

3. Edda. She's a pretty tragic character and shows the darker side of adventuring - that for all the talk of glory and spoils a lot of adventurer groups slowly dwindle down to nothing.

- Primals/Eikons:

1. Ravana. I honestly just really like his design. A giant warrior bug that uses fire and swords? Neat!

2. Sophia. I was very excited when I first realised that The Warring Triad would be showing up in FFXIV. Sophia didn't disappoint.

3. Sephirot. Same as above!

- Job/Class Trainers:

1. Fray. The 30-50 DRK quest chain still remains one of my favourite in the game to this very day. He did a great job at showing the Warrior of Light's inner turmoil.

2. Jacke. He provided some great insight into Limsa Lominsa's darker elements and he's a pretty neat character too!

3. X'rhun Tia. Masculine looking miqo'te men are, unfortunately, very rare. He's handsome, intelligent, charming and nails the 'idealistic duelist' trope perfectly.

Major Characters:

Aymeric: I'm always a big fan of Knights and Ishgard, so Aymeric was an obvious choice. But it's more than that. Aymeric isn't just a hero or a general, he's a pragmatic idealist who is willing to do the nasty business to help his people, but also has incredible faith in them. He is willing to make sacrifices for the greater good, but avoids them whenever he can. He is compassionate to even the poor that most nobility ignore and is seriously concerned for the fate of his nation. He's everything a knight and leader should be. Plus, he's had some of the most clear chemistry with the Warrior of Light, even having a dinner date with them. The anecdote from the lorebook of him trying to teach Lucia to cook is an adorable idea too. ;)

Alphinaud: I'll be honest, I used to be on the hate bandwagon for Alphinaud. He was arrogant, treated the word as his oyster and the Warror of Light as a tool. He thought he knew better than everyone, an could solve all of Eorzea's problems with his brilliant ideas that nobody had ever considered before! But, it seemed that the writers were craftier than I thought, and it was all intentional. His 'brilliant' plans were repeatedly proven to have massive flaws, and the implosion of the Crystal Braves was a well needed reality check. He has shown to be maturing, even as his self-esteem has been broken. I love watching his development, and look forward to more with the character.

Nero Tol Scaeva: Ever since he started aiding the scions, I've become enamored with the scientist's dedication, and especially his snarky attitude. He is a more comical reflection of the Garlean belief in superiority, lording his intelligence over just about everyone. However, his other issues, like his great desire for acknowledgment and his inferiority complex towards Cid grant him a bit more depth than many 'mad scientist' characters.

Minor Characters:
Hoary Boulder: Devoted scion and beloved by the children, the antics of the hearty roegadyn (especially alongside the lascivious Aenor) are always a bright point in the often dark storylines of Final Fantasy XIV.

Emmanelain de Fortemps: While many disliked the character for his failures as a leader, I always took the boy as something of a teenage who was in way over his head. He means well, but he just isn't very good at his job. However, he always has amusing dialogue with Honoroit, and it was fun watching his development over the patches, as well as how broken up he was over Harchefaunt. Seeing a more 'normal' person frustrated with the (seemingly) effortless heroics of our heroes was also fun to watch.

Matoya In addition to being fun reference to the original Final Fantasy (up to her cave having the exact same appearance and character positions) I really enjoy the crabby old lady. She's smart, tough, and just a little mean. That doesn't mean she's not capable of kindness though, as shown through the side quest where she reveals her memories of Y'Shtola are some of her most treasured. She's a fun character, and I'd love to see more of her snarky attitude in the future.

Primals/Eikons:

King Thordan and His Knights Twelve: Fighting one of the originators of the Dragonsong war was a fitting finale to pre-patch Heavensward, and the fact that you fought several of them before in the Vault was icing on the cake. King Thordan is an exceptionally cool looking and thematic boss, with amazing attacks and quite frankly gorgeous music. It's a shame that his boss fight was so easy, but that's just how the cookie crumbles. His first appearance having him murder Lahabrea was an awesome touch too.

Shiva: Shiva has always been one of my favorite summons, and that hasn't changed for this game. Shiva is badass and beautiful, with a pretty design and cool theme. The fact that she's Ysale, one of my favorite characters from Heavensward, only makes her even better! The reveal that she's not the real Shiva was also interesting, as is the fact that she's actually much more similar to Halone than her namesake. She also has an awesome song, moving from an epic orchestral score to a fun Grrl Punk style number.

Alexander: Another one of my favorite summons throughout the series, the idea of a primal based on an idea being worshiped rather than a god is awesome. It was also cool to see that the Goblins (who had previously been a joke) actually had one of the most powerful primals in the series under their command. Alexander is a gigantic mechanical fortress filled with several awesome robot designs, and as a lover of robots myself there's a lot to like here.

Job/Class Trainers:

Jannequinard: One of my favorite class trainers, and one of the most amusing. Although he's not the most technically competent in his field, he has more than enough enthusiasm to spare. He's something of a spoiled fop, an archetype I enjoy despite how annoying they can be. He also proves himself to be a cunning statesman and politician throughout the questline, able to easily manipulate the social structures of Ishgard to his whim.

Alka Zoka: A skilled (and adorable) Sage who is also a rough and tough Marauder, Alka Zolka is a fun companion throughout the Scholar Quests. Made fun of by other Marauders for his scholarly interests, he nevertheless manages to outdo them all, becoming a powerful fighter and regaining ancient marital secrets. The fact that he gets cute Tonberry romance and the like is just icing on the cake.

Surito Cairo: Tonberry. Scholar. He is too cute to be believed. Only Settoto can possibly match the adorableness of this man.

Maybe I'll go into detail on the reasons at some point... Probably not though.

Major Characters:

Fordola: It's not often that I get as invested in a character as I did with this one. I think I've talked about her more on this forum than any other!

Raubahn: I love his combination of brutality and wisdom.

Ysayle: Watching her transition from villain to ally was very entertaining.

Minor Characters:

Laurisse: From the HW BSM class quests. Loved her spunk!

Gigi: From the ARR GSM class quests. His relentless scorn and criticism was hilarious.

Matoya: Her take-no-nonsense attitude was great, and she actually managed to eke a bit of actual personality out of the otherwise bland Y'shtola.

Primals/Eikons:

Alexander: It was nice seeing a truly benevolent primal (even if his "benevolence" still resulted in many lost lives), and I love time travel shenanigans. Also, been my fave summon since FFVI.

Garuda: She cray cray! Seriously, though, I love her design, and also the hints of backstory we got to her "origins" as an Allagan general.

Ramuh: Much like Alexander, I enjoyed that he wasn't an actively hostile figure, and could be reasoned with. Also, beard.

Job/Class Trainers:

Frey: HW DRK Trainer. I loved Frey's dry wit. And pretty much everything else, as well.

Hamon: ARR PGL Trainer. The old guy was a hoot!

Eschiva: HW WHM Trainer. She echoed many of the criticisms I, myself, had for the Padjal, and it was great how she was willing to gear up and take care of business herself when the Padjal failed to step up.

Major character:
Hien- not emo despite watching one of his closest allies get shot repeatedly and a castle fall on him, pragmatic, not stuffy, confident but not cocky.
Yshtola- the only original scion I actually liked.
Yugiri- took a huge risk to help her people, and has been a valuable ally.

Minor character:
Hilda- so sassy
Momodi- reminds me of a much more mature version of tataru
Edda- closest to total batshit crazy we need in this game.

Primals:
Moogle mog- great music and still quite often a mess to fight
Titan- the original extreme pain in the
Lakshmi- the music and her phrases... tho I like Sophias voice better

Job npcs:
None of them grabbed my attention really... can't even remember any names

I'm not filling out all the boxes.

My favorite character is Nero, believe it or not. He's a loose cannon, and I love unpredictability. It's extremely boring when everything proceeds exactly as I predict, and it usually does. Nero has the potential to break this trend, though he has yet to do so. Nero's loyalty is to himself first and foremost, but at the same time he seems to be slowly coming around despite remaining fundamentally Garlean.

My favorite Job trainer is, obviously, Fray. They provide invaluable insight into the Warrior of Light's psyche, and the 50 and especially 70 quests are made absolutely epic thanks to their presence.

My favorite primal is Alexander. Though it takes a while to get going his story is very interesting to me thanks to his time travel shtick, which can be hard to grasp at times and has no conclusive answer as to where he came from. It's an eternal mystery unless you believe in such a thing as "Time Zero."

Tataru Taru: With us for a long time. Reliable. Cares deeply about her friends.
Raubahn Aldynn: Strong. Loyal. Determined.
Fordola rem Lupis: Kickass redhaid.

- Minor Characters:
Hildibrand Manderville & Nashu Mhakaracca (Sorry I consider them as one item :p ): Humor.
Mide: Cute Au-Ra with a kind of sad story.
Loon gah: Fighter. Don't care about make-up or dresses. Miqo'te wearing an armored bikini.

- Primals/Eikons:
Shiva: Sacrifice.
Ramuh: Kind of reasonable.
Good King Moggle Mog XII: Big plushy.

- Job/Class Trainers:
Y'mhitra Rhul: Cool miqo'te
Widargelt: D'zentsa and O'tchakha
Curious George: Funny guy.

Okies, this seems like fun! So here are my lists:

• Major Characters:
  Haurchefaunt - (obvious reasons), mostly just everything about him! His personality, his undying loyalty and love for his nation, friends, and family!
  
  Ysayle - I absolutely just loved everything about her! Her back story was interesting and different from most. She truly was a WoL in my eyes(an incomplete one, but she still was!) She saw her mistake, sulked on it for as long as needed and decided to right the wrongs she had committed! She was truly an amazing and complex character. She really resonated with me so much.
  
  Alphinaud/Alisae Leveilleur - (I hate lumping these two, but...) They're both twins! (duh) and we haven't seen many twins in the Final Fantasy series be a part of the main cast. I really love their dynamic between each other as well. Both of their characters are portrayed wonderfully and seeing them grow day by day (expansion by expansion) is such a marvelous sight! AND they act like siblings! I love being able to relate to that so much. I love Alphinaud's try hard attitude and his willingness to never give up. And as for Alisae I love her approach to situations and her very headstrong personality! They really are two halves of a whole that work SO well together <3 And yet still maintain their own individual and unique personas.
  
• Minor Characters:
  Crammevoix - (Honestly the entire cast of the Scholasticate questline!...) but I really love Crammevoix the most XD. Mostly the typical stereotype of smug womanizer, goofball(kind of), and sees the error of ones way. Just really enjoyed his willingness to change for the better and to help others. (Also I ship EVERYONE with Theo, even Crammevoix XD)
  
  M'zhet Tia - I won't go into too much detail just because of potential spoilers and I know people play at their own pace. Non-spoilery things though, I love his characterization and growth through his quest line it was really cute! He's the epitome of youth in a way, and it was enjoyable and refreshing to see! Especially with all the war-torn stuff going on during Stormblood. (This whole quest line made me stay Miqo'te for so long I wasn't sure I was going back Hyur anytime soon during Stormblood.)
  
  Diabolos - I know, a bit unorthodox... but I really enjoyed his over arching story! I was not expecting him to progress even further after Lost City. So when I saw he became the main focus of the Mhachi series I was like "What?!?!?!" The voidsent had a master plan and stuck to it and almost achieved it! Just really enjoyed him as a villain, always nice to have good villains!
  
• Primals/Eikons:
  Shiva - Well... I've always loved Shiva in any incarnate, and I LOVE ALL THINGS SNOW AND ICE! Shiva was also very unique here as she was mortal transformed and fused with the aether to become a hybrid of Primal and mortal! I really loved everything that entailed Shiva and Ysayle so much! <3 Shiva best Primal!
  
  Bahamut - Mostly the backstory of the original Bahamut and the Mercydian plight really touched me through out the entire Coil questline. I just really felt all their anguish and despair in everything we witnessed from Bahamut. It was so tragic and very tearful. I know after finally reach the final part of Coils I was just struck with such sadness piecing all of the story together finally.
  
  Ravana - A new summon to the world of Final Fantasy. I really enjoyed his style and design as well as his voice acting! This was just something so fun and unique (HE WORE IT BETTER THEN SUSANO! lol jk jk) But I love the lust for battle and combat just was a fun fight! I love he's also aspected it seems to ice in a small part (as well as fire and earth!)
  
• Job/Class Trainers:
  Y'mitra - Well being a Summoner main from 2.0-3.55 I really enjoyed her involvement of me growing as a Summoner! She was fun and cute. I loved she was related to Y'shtola and she seems to really care about her big sister a lot! Their relationship is sooo adorable! *squee*. She was very self driven and determined. Just a very enjoyable kitty to have as a skilled Conjurer and amazing mentor as well as learning right alongside me!
  
  Jacke - Well first off... husbando material right off the bat! lol I loved his love and loyalty he has for his crew. He's very much the Robin Hood type. Very honorable.. yet still a Rogue XD Just loved everything about his character (and OMG! The lvl 60-70 NIN questline brought him back! And his and my other husbando's interactions, Orboro, were just amazing!)
  
  Sidurgu - I know, a bit odd. A lot of people probably say Fray when it comes to Dark Knight, but I really enjoyed Sidurgu a lot! His very determined um... way of doing things lol. He never does win does he? Least of all with those blasted moogles! But I loved him overcoming his own shortcomings especially with Rielle and I LOVED how... Love is a driving factor in his power of Darkness. WHETHER HE WANTS TO BELIEVE IT OR NOT! Which I feel is the same driving force for me as well when I play Dark Knight. Just enjoyed everything about him and even Rielle.

- Major Characters:
Haurchefaunt - do I even need to explain? :)
Alisae - I really like her character. She can be blunt and doesn't mind brute force but is also cute.
Tataru - I loved parts when she tried different jobs.
Regula van Hydrus and Gaius van Baelsar - I love antagonists that have some good reasoning and aren't just evil.

Honorary mention to Y'shtola (waifu material, but not that interesting character) and all the bros: Hien, Gosetsu, Thancred, Estinien.


- Minor Characters:
Khole - visiting her every week to exchange journal is pure pleasure.
Hoary Boulder - bro!

- Primals/Eikons:
Shiva maybe? I like her music.

- Job/Class Trainers:
Jackie - fun and interesting character.
Raya-O-Senna - I like her character. Wish we had more interactions with her.
K'lyhia - waifu!

Major: Alphinaud
Sure, Alisaie is best waifu, but Alphinaud has been written very, very well. His gradual charcter development that really gained momentum in HW is the best, and we also know him quite well personally. His great drawing skills, his fear of ghosts, his inability to swim, and of course how much of a dirty pervert he is. He might not be the best character, but he sure as hell the best written one.

Minor:
Edda. Do I have to explain?

Primals:
Sephirot. Giant sentient tree with kickass music and a fun little fight. Lakshmi is fantastic, but...Giant sentient tree.

Job/class:
Karasu: I know it is cheating cause he is not an actual trainer, but he does help you at times and he is clearly the most talented ninja out of the whole bunch. And he is very entertaining.

Papashan, though not TECHNICALLY the PLD trainer, he's still a big part of it. I already liked PLD before his CSes, but he made me like it better. That scene where you do the deal with the thieves and Papashan charges down the hill. *chills*. PLD is the best.

Musosai, now I haven't done all the job quests up to level 70 yet so I dunno if another job's quests are sniffle worthy, but this has got to be the saddest job story I've experienced.

2.)Alisaie and Alphinaud are both between the ages of 16-18 (of course Elezen's age differently in a way, and we've NEVER been given a "legal" age for Eorzea.) So they are not "kids" as you so quickly stated. Teenagers or young adults would most accurately describe them much better.
3.)Canonically it's been stated that Alisaie does have a bit of a crush on the Warrior of Light (whether you see it as romantically or just her idolizing you, that's up to you.)
4.)Alisaie and Alphinaud both are Top tier waifu and mid tier husbando for me!

Anyway, sorry for the off-topic rant. Which shouldn't have happened anyway...

Major Characters
Tataru - She gives a face to the Scion grunts who labour in the background to make sure the entire organization keeps running while the ”important” bigwigs are trying make themselves look useful. I've always been more partial to the logistical side of adventuring in fantasy stories as opposed to the actual monster slaying and general heroism and Tataru really scratches that itch.

Regula - The one Garlean who actually put his money where his mouth was and paid the price dearly. May he skip many a soar in the great beyond.

The Warriors of Darkness - Fighting the good fight is hard and even harder when you realize that for all your trouble you only managed to make things worse than you could ever imagine them to be. The short little arc with the Warriors of Darkness struck a chord with how it examined the unspoken assumption that no matter what way the story spins, whatever the 'good guys' decide to do will ultimately result in some kind of net positive on a cosmic level. That's not how things really work and hopefully future plotlines won't forget it.

Minor Characters
Moglin - All around boss moogle and a nice portrayal of a leader figure who does a solid job at governing his domain but isn't above petty things like brushing his own screwups under the rug or meting out disproportionate retribution for minor personal offenses against him.

Quickthinx – Chosen of Alexander, trueseer of futuretimes and the most hilarious antagonist to date. Watching him do his thing with all the gravitas only a goblin hell-bent on world domination can have was a joy to behold.

Unukalhai - Out of all the Scions he feels like the only one who actually understands what kind of crap WoL has to go through. He's one of the guys crystal mom handpicked to save the day from Ascian machinations and like Arbert and his buddies he knows what it's like to utterly fail at it. And despite that he still keeps trucking on. Double agent working for Elidibus or no, I just want to give the kid a big hug.

Primals/Eikons
Fourfold master of the blade, Ravana - Mostly because unlike the other primals we've seen so far he's entirely original to XIV, something unique to this particular entry in the series. Pandering to nostalgia is fine and all, but that alone isn't going to make a story memorable. It's not the Bahamuts and Omegas that I'm going to remember when I'll be looking back to my tome grinding days, it's Ravana and all the other new things that took me by surprise. On top of that his insectoid aesthetic really stands out in a sea of fantasy monsters based on more traditionally badass mammalian, reptilian and avian animals.

Job/Class Trainers
Tristan - Not a job trainer but I guess he technically falls under this category. Zenos may have understood what being a superpowered murder machine is like, but Tristan was the guy who could understand why that first victory over Ifrit at level 20 felt like a failure. That shared experience of sorts made me care about him much like it made me care about Unukalhai to the point I remember him more fondly than some characters the writers have actively tried to make me care about even if he was an ass.

Major:

• Cid Garlond. He is honestly one of my favourite fictional characters, period, and in spite of how long I could fawn and ramble about him being #1 best husbando, I'll stick to the briefest version I can. I got attached to him during a bit of a low point in my IRL social life, where a lot of his character traits ended up being a huge reminder of what was important to me in real people. I also connected a lot with him in his story as a person suffering so badly from psychological trauma that it seemed to fundamentally alter him--and then grow into someone who restored their own personhood. I needed that; it was huge for me to see a narrative wherein someone not only wasn't permanently wrecked by their trauma, they grew into someone good and healthy and hopeful afterwards. His self-awareness and legitimate efforts at reform from his past as an instrument of violence, too--if our characters had met him as a teenager, for example, he'd probably have been a villain. Yet, in spite of the pressure of his upbringing and cultural pressure, he chose to walk a different path. He didn't start off billed as "good"; he had to choose to be, and he did. That's harder to do than it sounds. I'm honestly so grateful to the writers for Cid.
  
• 'Nael' van Darnus (Eula). 1.0 kind of grabs me by the heartstrings, basically. The very fact that the real Nael van Darnus is dead long before 1.0 even starts is intriguing enough; the reason there's a Nael running around in 1.0 is even more so, and I don't actually find the lorebook revelation to be a retcon in any way. JP dialogue from 1.0 and Coil was ambiguous and explicitly female, respectively, and while I concede it might not change the whole story, it's an important bit of background that personally made me feel the full weight of the meanings behind the Calamity and why Bahamut is what he is/was what he was. I used to feel a bit disappointed that the reason behind Eula's most extreme actions was "just" becoming tempered, until it struck me: Eula and Bahamut are in some ways kindred spirits. Both were products of the traitorous murders of loved ones; Eula lost Nael, and Tiamat and her progeny lost Bahamut, both cruelly betrayed by the self-interests of human beings. Bahamut in his primal Came Back Wrong state was a living (sort of) construct of tortured vengeance, and Eula chose to fashion her grief and despair into an utterly ruthless weapon of destruction. I've spent a lot of time wondering if the reason she particularly was tempered was that she already shared the belief with the long-suffering inhabitants of Dalamud that the world of mankind was no longer worth saving. She's also an interesting mirror for Ysayle, in a way--if Ysayle had continued down her path and ended up also choosing to go full-blown terrorist, she and Eula would be kin in some manner of speaking. Obviously, sympathy for Eula has to come to a halt at approximately the point she begins toiling for the complete annihilation of hundreds of thousands of innocent lives, but I still find her compelling under the helmet.
  
• Ysayle. She's a fascinating counterpoint to the WoL in that she, too, is the bearer of a Crystal of Light--but her choices lead her initially to do radically different things with her gift. Yet in spite of being an unambiguously dangerous antagonist until a little ways in to the Heavensward story, it's hard to argue that her goals were in the wrong place. She really did want to put an end to the slaughter and find peace, but her movement was going down a dark path. It's telling of her character that she decided to lay it all aside to become one of our closest allies, and I still miss her greatly.

Minor:

• Regula van Hydrus. I can’t in good conscience separate him from the values of the system he was devoted to, but I really took a punch to the heart when we got to see him be something other than impeccably tea-sipping Orson Wells-voiced swordsman. Apart from becoming a reminder to the main cast that while Garlemald’s actions have been evil, they have still been conducted by human beings. What I was most impressed by is that when things became urgent on the Flagship, when we pushed him on Ysayle’s death, he conceded that he wasn’t willing to defend her killing. I still have lingering doubts that he would have leapt in front of Zurvan to save Unukalhai if Unukalhai hadn’t had the Echo, but his actions spoke for him in the end anyway, so maybe he would have. He was principled (cognitively dissonant though those principles might be), honourable, and selfless, and I miss him dearly.
  
• Nero tol Scaeva. Is it actually fair to put him under 'minor'? XD; I have doubts... Anyway, Nero has some of my absolute favorite character growth in the whole game. He’s literally one of our villains in 2.0, where we find out that unbeknownst to Cid, he felt slighted, ignored, and deprived of actualisation. Then the bastard turns back up in 2.x to annoy us all the way through Crystal Tower—which serves him a pretty hefty dose of humble pie. He breaks his cookie-cutter jealous-antagonist mold for good by the end of the CT arc, becoming more interested in cultivating himself irrespective of Cid’s career. When he showed up again at the end of 3.4, I howled—did the dork not learn a thing? XD But he turns out to be kind of a good guy underneath the unbearable smugness, goading of Cid’s discomfort, and the twitchy remains of a lifelong inferiority complex. It’s been great fun having him in Omega, and even though I’m still pissed at him for a specific poorly-expressed jab he made at Cid’s expense, I actually have a lot of hope for him as a character. It’s tough to do what he’s doing—even if it probably is the case that it’s at least half just for himself.

Primals:

• Susanoo. This guy is SO FUN. As primals go, he really doesn’t seem all that interested in hurting anyone—he’s just here to party, as far as he’s concerned. He even giggles good-naturedly the whole time you’re fighting him. It was kind of an ‘aww darn it’ moment when we had to put him out of commission; I’d go to a barbecue or a road trip with the dude. Best friends forever (free!).
  
• Bahamut. How can you not, really. He’s one of humanity’s most horrifying mistakes—a godlike, initially probably not that ill-meaning dragon, that through the exploited grief of his lover was Frankenstein’d together out of countless tortured pieces of living things and given primal energy. Then when the obvious catastrophic circumstances of bringing him about were made acutely clear, the Allagans snared him, boxed him up with live, tortured, intelligent creatures, and sent him into space. Summoners meditate on him when reaching the extremes of our potential as channelers. He’s the ultimate symbol of tragedy hanging over Eorzea. Eikonic, if you’ll forgive the pun.

Job Trainers:

• Y'mihtra. Y’shtola’s sweet and cheerful scholarly relative—and an archaeologist. She’s so cool, and we learn all about the lost art and meditations of Allagan summoning before the days of aetherochemical abominations.

I just love them for their character. Alphinaud feels like a brother to my WoL and I honestly would stop playing if he dies. I just love the way his character went and he can fight and be good with politics, while still having his flaws. Alisaie has wormed her way into my heart in SB but she is probably just third place because she is a bit overdone at times. I can understand the sibling rivalery and she does care about him but sometimes I was a bit annoyed at her talking down Alphinaud in front of us when he was not even there. But otherwise I still liked her for her sassy character. Ysayle is someone that I could feel for. Another blessed one that kinda got tricked into believing that she was doing the right thing. Her wishes were great but done with the wrong methods. Did not like how they ended her character but could accept is as a way for her to redeem herself. Still she would have been an interesting scion.

Honestly the list kinda shows what happens to my favorite characters..half of them are gone..
Anyway....I just love Haurchefant (yes even before HW). His positive outlook and the way he acted was fresh air and he really felt like a friend and later as a good love interest for my character. He is one of the few that needs to be hold back by a group of people so that he would not endanger himself. The way they went with him is something that I cant even accept even now and will always be a very sour spot. Moenbryda was also a fresh air because next to Alphinaud none of the other main scions really interested me. They could have all died and I would not care. Unlike her who I started to like as soon as she was here. Which made it even sadder that she was just a plot device that was only there to flesh out Urianger and to give us a way to kill Ascians..Tataru is the last one and I really hope that she sticks with us for a long time. I love how she at least tried to increase the money for the scions, even if she mostly failed.

Primals/Eikons:

I honestly dont care much for them. Most of the time they are just one dimensional enemies and the few that are not are mostly interesting because of the people behind them.

I do like all the job trainers that I have done till now in some way but honestly only one can even be called as something like a favourite. I like Fray because I agreed with a lot that he said.

Second. It's always fun when I unintentionally offend someone and they write a (micro) dissertation. Yep, it sure was worth it. I have a collection of those images because I find them funny and love when I get to use them. Believe me, I want to snog every elf and lizard husband in this game. And I don't get the slightest bit offended when someone "tags" me as an Aymeric/Haurchefant/Estinien/Magnai/Sidurgu/*insert other sexy elf/lizard here* fangirl. It's a badge of honor, really. Well I feel like the last reply to this was weeks ago BUT I felt compelled to weigh in so screw it, I am doing it.

- Major Characters:
---- Lord Haurchefant Greystone. Say whatever you want, he shall always be a major character in this story. Perhaps not because of his achievements, but because of the impact and meaning he leaves in the Warrior of Light. No matter if you saw their relationship as platonic or romantic, the memory is always there, and we are constantly reminded that the WoL is still mourning him hard enough to shock Fordola (amongst other stuff).
---- Alphinaud Leveilleur. I keep saying. If by some miracle I do not get Haurchefant back, I am so shagging Alphy. I absolutely love him. His character development reminds me quite a bit to my favorite FF character, Hope Estheim from FFXIII. He is the Scion that genuinely cares the most about the WoL's well-being, he learned from his mistakes, he rose to leadership without even calling himself a leader and after 4.3 I was squealing like a hopeless fangirl about him. And he is definitely comedic relief too. He has flaws, but the beauty of his character is that he actually thrives to overcome them.
---- Ysayle Dangoulain. Oh gods, I absolutely loved Lady Iceheart. She was complex, she had strong beliefs and morals, she was not a hypocrite about her "greater good" like other moralist/preacher character do. I feel that after dying, and particularly after 3.3, she is somehow tied to Haurchefant. Whenever one is mentioned, the other does not take long to be mentioned as well, even in Stormblood. I would love to see both back, and Ysayle in particular had so much potential. Imagine her as a full-fledged summoner.
---- Zenos yae Galvus. Well duh. I love his simplistic villainy. Most villains want to conquer and have more powah and all that but Zenos? Does not give a damn. All he wants is the thrill of basic instincts, let loose the ferality within and enjoying the adrenaline of battle. Indeed, his methods were brutal, but he feels... like the human part we have tried so hard to supress, but it is still there, and in the last moments, there is a sense of acknowledgement between him and the WoL. "Farewell, my first friend... My enemy." Chills. That line is amazing.
---- Lord Hien. He is basically everything you want in a bro-like character. The friendly rivalrly, the good-intended quips, the trust. I guess it is easy to see him as a potential love interest, but personally I think he fits more the role of the friendly rival. And despite his youth and his brash and outgoing personality, he is actually wise and smart.
---- Yotsuyu of the Naeuri. I already loved her as a villain before the patches. She might be a sadist, but delving into morally-questionable characters is always enlightening, because they tend to be the most complex. Yotsuyu is one of them. She actually went and reverted a trope, and gave 4.3 quite the amazing finale, despite it was a sad, yet satisfying, conclusion. It is a story of how monsters create monsters, it ties with Fordola's own people creating the Butcher, and that no nation is exempt of having moral flaws.


- Minor Characters:
---- Count Edmont de Fortemps. Dear Lord, Edmont. I love, LOVE this man. Saying he became the closest to a father figure to the WoL (and maybe Alphinaud) would not be exaggerating. I really hope to see more of him. He was caring, honest, honorable, and truly a revolutionary during Ishgard's seclusive era.
---- Magnai of the Oronir and Sadu of the Dotharl. Really, those two need to get together right now. I mean it. They are made for each other. And they cannot even see it. Ugh.
---- Urianger Augurelt. I am putting him in "minor" compared to the screen time he shares with his fellow Scions. I feel like Urianger is the most interesting of all them, bar Alphinaud and Alisaie. The other Scions are rather sure in their "walking the path of Light", but 3.4 did one thing quite well and it was Urianger daring to take the other side to have a better insight into the truth. He is wise, and I love his cryptic, Shakespearian ways. He should have a better role than giving life-saving artifacts, which is of course still welcome, but you get me. (And please give him back his 4.4 attire Squenix for the Twelve's sake.)

- Primals/Eikons:
---- Alexander! Always a favorite of mine. Sure, the Goblin thing was a bit odd, but how cool is that in this game Alexander is a freaking timelord?! I swear, each time they make Alexander more OP and I will not be the one complaining.
---- Shinryu. Truly an epic fight. Epic music. Epic twist. Epic dragon. And it all came from Nidhogg's eyes. Perfect tie from Heavensward.
---- Byakko. Thunder tigerdaddy. 'Nuff said.
---- Zurvan, he was pretty damn cool. That cinematic attack with the snowflake and the lance was awesome. I think it was the first time an attack was rendered this way?
---- If bosses from raids count, then I love Scathach. Queen of Wipes--I mean, Shadow. Still, her battle was really really fun, and her design was awesome.
---- It goes without saying that Tsuku is also a favorite... but that is spoiler-ish so I will not say much about her. Just that the fight is incredibly beautiful.


- Job/Class Trainers:
---- Fray and Myste. Welp. I loved the lvl50 DRK questline. Then lvl70 questline absolutely made me cry and fangirl and cry some more. It is my only tank job and I do not regret it because of quality lore and storyline. Even when it is Sidurgu and Rielle, who are interesting in their own way.
----Sanson and Guydelot. You cannot fool me. They are gay™. They are a matrimony of married people. Every time I go out adventuring as a bard with them, I feel like I am the third wheel. And it is awesome.
---- Leveva. Oh gods, praise the Twelve for Lady Levev--I mean, Lord Rufin. We need more sassy healers in the world. Also, Jannequinard.
---- X'rhun Tia. I mean, c'mon. You do not always have a DILF red mage Miqo'te as your job mentor. And his intro kicking brigands' asses just does the trick.
---- Lalai and Zhai'a Nelhah. Those two must become a thing. I am calling it.

Major Characters

Zenos - I think he gets shoehorned and pigeonholed and a bum rep personally. Lots of people just like him for his looks, most people think he's a snoozefest of a villain. Me, my first impression of him was that he was depressed. He seemed to me a meta commentary on 1337 Raiders who only re-subscribe on major raiding patches, who only seem to care about battle content, and only want to do battle content. In a way, he was a reflection of me as a player, because battle content is what I embrace most wholeheartedly. With that in mind, it was kind of cool to see the WoL be what snaps him out of depression, and to watch him throw away military advantages all so he could duel the WoL. Then he shows us that we could have been controlling Primals with The Echo... Then he killed himself, with every intention of dying, so that he would end his life at its highest, happiest peak. Surprise, surprise though, he was an immortal without realizing it. So then, what does he do? Immediately seeks to reclaim his body so he can fight us at his fullest strength. I find him more compelling than evil pope from Heavensward, but slightly less compelling than Emet-selch.

Alisae - She is my favorite scion, pretty much ever since the battle with the WoDs.

Hien - Love his voice, personality, and his personal Limit Break.

Cid - Makes most of our shenanigans possible. Helps out with raid tiers. Flies us lots of places.

Nero - my favorite antihero. His complex with Cid is relatable to me.
Minor Characters
Gerolt - I've done every relic so far, and he's been there for all of them providing comedy as well as the occasional cool statement that builds on his actual character. Relate to him now more than ever with the whole, "You should be a high ranking Syndicate leader, not some drunk broke ass kettle maker." And his response to that basically being, piss off I do what I want.

Haurchefant - His role in the story wasn't big beyond that one moment, but he was my favorite Ishgardian even as early as 2.0 MSQ in Coerthas. I even told myself they'd probably kill him. T_T

as an update my list is pretty much the same but id add urianjier or however u spell it and emet selch obviously ;)

Major Characters:
Gaius van bailsar: Fantastic antagonist and unique in the only opponent so far I have wanted to have a solo battle against. Skilled both on and off the battle and a badass when doing so without making his opponents seem weak, steadfast to his beliefs and not afraid to commit treason in order to do what's right for his country. Very interesting lore and some of the better voice acting of 2.0- hell probably the best outside of Merlwyb

Y'shtola: Smart but not full of herself. Has a lot of secrets but shares them, damn good in combat, good voice acting. Not afraid to say the hard truths and seems to be the only scion to actually make sure you're healthy. I wish she'd give us water magic though

Yugiri: Shy yet surprisingly deep with her thoughts. Devoted to her lord but not to the point of stupidity (To the point where the second fight with Zenos was shockingly out of character for both her and the WOL plus it seemed like it was thrown in just to make Zenos look more difficult) she has feelings for both the WOL and Hien but doesn't let them get in the way where possible. She's been through a lot too being banned from Sui-no-Sato and being forced ot go to the other side of the world for her countrymen. I really wish we could help her visit her home some day since we are friends with the ruby princess. Its a shame her voice actor got murdered and was shelved from HW out of respect.

Minor Characters:
Godbert Manderville: Very business savvy while being funny and crazy awesome. Also has enough guts to willingly ignore refugee plights to prevent Teledjii from getting his hands on Omega

Riol: Its a rare man that is willing to spy on his own group of his own volition. Its an even rarer one to stay loyal even after discovering how deep corruption goes. Plus he was a member of the company of heros, and actually seems to be the minor scion doing the most work offscreen after Coultenet

Moenbryda: Big fun, big axe, big lady, big brains. Went out because she was too good for the plot. Damn it

Primals/Eikons:
Ravana: Honourable, fun fight, excellent music and actually has no grievance with us and legitimate reasons for a war of aggression. Hell he even offers to help ishgard when he mistakes the WOL intentions. Also notable for bearing no ill will to us even after we explain our intentions. Gets points too for skerwering Shiva (I really wasn't fond of Ysayle at that point in the story)

Alexander: My favourite primal. I love time magic. Very interesting how he's based upon an idea rather than a god. He helps us out multiple times and indirectly had a hand in saving our life from the 8th calamity. What's more he wishes for a truly perfect world and executes the villains that summoned him in order to do it. Also honest about his powers and uses them smartly both for and against us. Cool fights, really cool gear...even his most villainous incarnation in TEA is an interesting opponent. I just wish I could get a static to do that fight

Titan: A clever, stubborn (seriously he fights without his heart for 1/2 a battle) but straightforward honest primal who holds legitimate grievances. Also responsible for giving SE the reminder to improve the latency. Excellent music and notable challenge in each battle. To the point that I was both surprised and not when the devs announced that the first Unreal trial being Titan was scrapped because he was too hard.
Dude's solid, and he's the only boss that has simulatniously made me laugh and kick my arse decisively enough that I wish more fights were as hard as his. He's also one of three bosses to actually scare me. (that being when he became titan maximum)

Job/Class Trainers:
Fray: Says everything I been annoyed about for a while in story. Actually a competent healer in combat compared ot most npcs. He backs you up as well and apologises for previous events in his own super charming manner. He's also quite funny at times with his wit

Musosai: Though I saw the twists coming, I really respected him. For me to commit seppuku is the easy way out. For him to pick himself back up and try again in a land where all the odds are stacked against him at the end of his life speaks volumes about his honour. Also notable for being the only job series where the WOL actually did what I hoped they'd do.

Jacke and the rest of the rogues: Amusing yet serious and have good depth for class quests. They have flair, cheek and I wholeheartedly approve of how they do things in style.
