Sorry, but this had to be done.
I don't care how you compare them. Looks, usefulness, sense of humor, coolness, strength, leadership ability, voice, whatever.
Out of the two nation leading expansion poster boys, which one do you prefer?

A very good point. Although to be fair Aymeric has been around since 2.4
Hien.
Aymeric began to bore me the moment he became Haurchefant 2.0 and many of his fans put me off the character altogether due to their creepy obsession with him.
As for Hien, I like his character design. He was humble, polite and friendly whilst not being overly stiff. He has a great voice, too - and I like that he proposes his own ideas without leaning too heavily on the Warrior of Light. I also like how he acknowledged that Yotsuyu had a point - misguided though her actions may have been - by vowing to remember her words.
It's way too early for us to really judge Hien since he just got introduced; so far, he's a nice character. We'll see how he develops throughout the expansion of Stormblood.
HOWEVER, I'm Team Aymeric; that fine Elezen has my heart. :] Still waiting for Temple Knights to become a Grand Company so I can ditch Twin Adder lol
Aymeric's been around longer, so he's probably the "better" character right now. Hien hasn't had much time to develop. Time will tell.
At this point in time? Aymeric. And he started out as merely eye candy for me. I really didn't care much about Aymeric due to him seeming cold, distant, and a politician in the beginning. But how they used him throughout the 3.x series he started out as just a politician we met through Haurchefant and eventually evolved into a friendship due to the trials that we went through together. Then again, how HW was set up it really felt like it was a journey with a few main characters being Alphinaud, Ysayle (sorta), Estinien, and Aymeric. As much as I love Hien, we do not get to spend that much time with him because the game deals with us finding him more than interacting. But once he does join our group I thoroughly love him in ways I don't with Aymeric. I really do hope that they integrate Hien more into the 4.x series similar to Aymeric because I think he has a lot of great potential.
Haurchefant
I like Hien better than I like Aymeric so far and he barely even appeared in the scenario (haven't completed MSQ yet).
Aymeric always felt like a damsel-in-distress type of character. The more I advanced through HW, the more I felt he was a second Nanamo. Sure he acts tougher and participates more actively to the fighting, but his actual contribution to the plot is minimal. He is there. That seems to be his function, like they needed a leader for Ishgard, so there you go, he exists. He does little more than ask for help from the WoL and be there. With some distance, it was all very disappointing.
Aymeric, mostly because of that voice. But I also like him as a character and politician. And he's an Elezen.
Hien has yet to grow on me; I thought I'd like him more than I ended up doing for some reason. Something about him just seems smug even when he's being sensible and saying perfectly humble things. Perhaps I'll soften up towards him later on.
I like pretty much all of the Xaela though.
But why chose when you can have them both? You're the WoL- everyone around you suffers the debuff called Hero Worship.
Hien is the only correct answer.
Side tip: you can visit Hien anytime you want in the Doman Enclave, there's a boat in Yanxia that takes you there.
I like warmer and more humble characters so that makes Hien my favourite of the two. Really looking forward to the rest of the stormblood story as the patches come out.
Ser Aymeric, no doubt!
Aymeric because he is the only person to ask what my character wanted for herself as a person, not as the WoL.
While I'll say Aymeric now, I would need to see more of Hien across 4.0 to make a fairer comparison.
Hien is the first male character in XIV that I found straight up sexually attractive. (Cis het woman here.)
Hauchefant was a bro. Aymeric is a respected leader. Estinien is a brooding comrade. Alphinaud is a teen and Thancred is a slut. Urianger is still recovering from a grief-stricken heart. Magnai is a teddy bear but I'm not his namaa. Cid comes close to ringing my bell, as does Nero. Close, but not quite...
Hien hit all the notes. Great character design, interesting personality, strong leader, totally a match for the WOL in terms of battle strength as well. I expect great things from him. And if my character wasn't IC married (and myself IRL married) I'd totally be shipping my WOL with him. As it is, I'm gonna hope he gets with Lyse. (Aymeric can have Lucia.)
Aymeric, though I really like Hien, too.
Most of it is the time spent developing Aymeric. We've seen him struggle, grow, and still currently works his rear off to help Ishgard.
On top of that, his open and personable attitude towards the WoL is, so far, unique to him. He isn't just a political figure, he really is the WoL's friend. He comes off as being tighter with us than half the Scions and it doesn't hurt that's he's always so happy to see you at every point he's appeared so far in SB.
I hope that this type of development is done with Hien and Lyse going forward. I much prefer the alliance leaders being a close comrades to the WoL like Aymeric or a grizzled veteran wanting to mentor like Raubahn's become. The ladies need some more screentime, too.
Nobody can touch the glory that is Lord Baemeric.
Of those left alive:
1. Estinien
2. Aymeric
3. Hien
Very close between the last two though since we don't know Hien enough. But first impressions are that Hien might come out on top.
Hien is a hottie. I really love his character and look forward to seeing more of him in the months to come.
It's technically early to call, but I will say that, on looks and base personality alone, I prefer Hien. I want to see how he develops, whereas I want to see Aymeric go back to Ishgard and get Foundation looking decent. <_<
I really loved both Aymeric and Hien. Hien is a bit more "fun" than Aymeric and seems like a nice guy. But I also adore how sincere Aymeric is and how he worked so hard to be a respectable person and doesn't sit back giving orders but actually tries to actively help and do what's right/best. I think Aymeric feels a bit more "real" to me at this point so I gotta throw my vote to him.
That said, we had a lot more time with Aymeric. I'm hoping we get more with Hien!
Hien has this more 'adventurous' feel, and he's a total cutie as well.
I don't know how Hien qualifies as 'generic' in some people's eyes when most of Aymeric's fans only like him because he's a pretty boy elf with an attractive voice...which whilst not necessarily a bad thing it's still hardly the epitome of uniqueness.
I think its too soon to compare their personalities, but visualy and voice, Aymeric wins.
Hien's whole humble attitude and the way he approaches situations are what I love. Plus he's easy on the eyes ;) Aymeric rubbed me the wrong way with that whole dinner or whatever it was at that gigantic table.
Yeah, Hien seems like he could potentially be a good friend for the WoL like Haurchefant was. Aymeric seems more like the co-worker type. Great to work with, and I like his character, but we don't really have much contact with him outside of the occasional life or death mission.
Hien. I've not yet forgiven Aymeric for yelling us to toss the eyes in the abyss. >_>;
