Understanding why I lose fish

I'm currently at 872 Gathering and 638 Perception, I have all the best in slot gear for body, hands, legs, feet, all overmelded and HQ. I'm working on the yellow scrip Fishing rod right now and will update the head piece soon when I can get another overmelded one.

Why do I keep losing fish that are anywhere from 5-20 levels below me? There are times where I lose fish 4-5 times in a row in an area where that literally shouldn't happen. This is not including using patience or anything other than regular casts/reels.

Is there just a guaranteed chance to lose every fish regardless of skill and I'm just getting huge bouts of bad luck? Is it because my fishing rod isn't the BiS yet so I can lose any/everything? I can't really find info about chances just usually thresholds for needing x-amount of gathering to catch something and I don't understand why I lose so many fish, so frequently.

i'm sorry if you are overmelded and hq and your gathering/perception is only that you've done something wrong. fully pentamelded crafted HQ gear i have 1177/1200 gathering/perception.

There is always a chance to lose fish. it's just simple rngesus.

Is there something above HQ pentamelded Serge stuff that I have missed? I have everything but the fishing rod/head piece, and 3 of the accessories, I somehow doubt those will give me 300/500 in each stat.

If its just RNG I can live with that I have just been a bit frustrated with losing so much.

I'm pretty sure 'Fish gets away' is actually built in to the process. You can't get away from it. With spear for example, there are 3 gig sizes and no matter what one you choose, you leave fish on the node you can't catch with the Gig you have on. When those fish show up on the catch, it gets away. It's the same for bait fishing. You can't bait for all fish and some are hard locked to get away.

Then there is folklore. I can go back and fish level 51 stuff like Coerthan crabs and I still get 'fish gets way' because I simply can't field gear and tackle for every fish in the pool.

Those stats sound like MIN/BOT stats not FSH stats. Not having an actual stat giving off-hand means fishers have about 200-ish less gathering and 350-ish less perception (plus materia) than Miners and Botanists which would seem to account your higher numbers. Fishers always have less gathering and perception than Miners and Botanists though fishing itself is balanced around that. But if you're really talking about your FSH stats I too would be curious to see how you managed that.

Just playing with Ariyala's gear calculator, it looks like the best stats a Fisher can have with pentalmelded hq gear, FC buffs, and food, is around 1030-ish gathering, 900-ish perception and 738 GP, which again falls in line with your stats minus a stat-granting off-hand. Perhaps if you could make your gear on http://ffxiv.ariyala.com/FSH and give us a link to it we'll be able to help you improve your stats. They sound very low for overmelded serge gear.

Just like fishing in real life you need to let them tug the line a bit and if your using any buffs learn how they affect your hook capability.

You cannot achieve 100% gather rate for certain fish, no matter how high your stats go.

hehe ya i realized this last night that i was thinking MIN/BOT stats not FSH stats. i use all the same gear so for me my stats for FSH are 981/815 for gathering/perception with 753 GP.

Like Canadane said, some fish (just like some items in MIN/BTN) have a capped chance to gather.

yeah even if you had all the gathering in the world some items will only ever have 95% chance of gathering.

Thank you everyone for all the info, I understand now. I was a bit frustrated because I had a string of failures on things I know I have caught before and have the stats to do so, and just felt like something was wrong.

I was surprised with the 1100 stats DrWho mentioned but that makes sense if we take out the offhand, I'm getting there and just need the fishing rod as of today so at least now I know for sure it isn't my gear.

understanding why you lose fish...

when a fish bites, the hook isn't set fixed in his mouth on it's own. you have to use the "hooking" skill, and you will notice you throw the fishing rod back, before you move it around to tire out the fish, and then land it. that throwing back of the rod is important, in that process you fixate the hook in the mouth of the fish. only when the hook is set fixed you can pull the fish in. but if the hook is in a bad position, and you throw the rod back, the hook can't pierce through the fish correctly and you will lose the fish.

Bull pucky. That's RL fishing.

Its because in most of 2.x if you had the stats you couldn't loose a fish. Even the first round of big fish were like this. So they started building in a garunteed chance of loss. And it does not change with any stats.

I know, I still fish for ninja bettas.
