Am I the only one that finds that the soon-to-be-introduced company system sounds somewhat different to the one originally announced by the previous development team? I don't recall the word "public" being so prominent a part of the previous idea. All of a sudden, mentions of the fact that companies were supposed to be amalgamations of linkshells seem to have disappeared from discussions about, or references to, the company system.
The repeated mention that, allegedly, games are trending towards smaller parties and guild units usually accompanies news of the (new?) "public company" system, with no mention of linkshells being consolidated into big, player-administrated larger units. Some clarification would be nice.
Any comments?

Yes we need more clarification. There is way too much ambiguity. We will see what happens but for right now most people are just taking stabs in the dark at what will really come of this company system.

I have no idea what companys are going to be, honestly every time they are mentioned I am getting a worse and worse feeling about them. I fear Yoshi trashed Tanaka's idea on companys which is probally the worst possible thing he could of done as I thought that was probally going to be best update outside content the game was going to have.
Tanaka made it sounds like they where going to be player controlled with housing, ships, and are used for large scale battles basically a guild in other mmos while linkshells where for more of a social thing.
Yoshi is making it sound like it is just a npc pearl where everyone in the city will join together to fight off some threat. /epic fail if this is right.
The whole talk about a focus on small group and public group makes me question if the devs feel they can fix this game, almost like the mentality of Abysea and ffxi... well the game will be low population so make it so everything is public based or low manable to let the players who will remain be able to play the game without the requirement of alot of people.
Honestly I want Tanaka's version of it if my interpretation is true. The linkshell system fails hardcore, it would need to be redone almost 100% and making linkshells lowman only is the opposite of what SE needs to do. If Companys are not going to be player controlled and being used as more of an endgame/event element I think the devs are wasting a massive amount of time on something that will not be accepted well to begin with. -

For my understanding there is public and one made my linkshell the public one you can enter and leave when ever you like and the ls one is more you have to get invite for.

Hmmm... I am getting the feeling that the Public Company system is going to be some sort of pre-set, faction-like series of quests related to "the danger that faces Eorzea". The mention of housing, ships, and the conglomeration of linkshells has been kinda dropped by the wayside. I hope I'm wrong. And if I'm not, I, for one, would like to know the reasons for the change. This somehow PR-Department-staged series of surveys has made no mention of plans, previously mentioned as part of the game, that seem to have disappeared from all consideration.

what if public companies are related to hamlet defense? An NPC like linkpearl would be perfect for this. Imagine, a hamlet gets attacked by a horde of beastmen, you get a call on the public company pearl to lend a hand.
I don't think an npc like linkpearl is all that bad of an idea. There are a million different ways they can take it. Don't start complaining about something we have no idea what it entails yet. -

I'm a bit confused as well...but maybe they're planning on implementing companies as being both "public" and "private." Public companies acting the way previous posters have suggested, and private companies being the ones that have been mentioned in the past, being player-run and having the ships and housing that Tanaka promised.

I thought there were to be public companies, and LS based companies. Sounded to me like it'd be mostly LS, but the people without a LS would still be able to participate in something.
I could be totally wrong. Can't wait to hear more about them.
I pictured LS based companies player run, and public companies perhaps NPC run or something.
After only hearing about Public/Grand companies for a while now, I do wonder if there will only be one type of company. -

I think we will have 2 different kind of companies.
1) Grand Companies. NPC based.

This is something i wrote in another thread but seems a lot more fitting in this one. As far as public/grand companies go we can only make interpretations based on what very little info we have and so far based on interviews what we know is: global communities, global impact, endgame event, sense of danger for eorzea, large & small scale events and he said he would focus on gameplay with 4 and 8ppl parties.
i'm thinking of a mix of conquest, besieged and campaign from ffxi. What you do will have a global impact, guessing some kind of point system for the company u join, more ppl that complete events will raise the rating of said company. Planned campaign type attacks on aetheryte camps by beastman tribes or the empire. Destroy flag in beastman hideout or rescue npc prisoner similar to besieged. all events gives points which you can then trade in for gear, along with instanced quests to take place at said new locations or quests to accomplish when said attacks happen, such as kill enemy leader or collect certain amount of item that drops from said tripe but can get it during the raid only. If they do add new beastman locations then we know there will be a overlord type leader for each tribe, which can be HNMs.
These are the type of events that come to mind for ME when i read interviews about companies. I think the company itself is not an event but an organization or a group players join before undergoing events, because in a recent interview Yoshi-P said and i quote "The thing is, we realized that we could bring out player Companies, but then if there's nothing for the Companies to do there wouldn't be any reason to bring it out. We decided to reverse that and first make sure that there's going to be content and stuff for the Companies to do before releasing the Companies." but its all assumption till we get official news. -

I must be one of the only ones who want this kind of content before instanced dungeons/raids. I would love to see a Company being a link between say 8 linkshells able to communicate on one channel. Having their own guildhall, ship, etc. The social aspect of FFXIV is what keeps me playing, and this would make it absolutely ideal.

It's actually a detriment to SE to release minimal information and then let players speculate on it for a long time. Sure, it builds up anticipation, but on the other hand it encourages all this rampant theorizing that almost always turns out to be way over-the-top.
SE should release information about new features in complete form and players would be much more satisfied when it does come out. Letting players speculate with minimal information is a sure recipe for underwhelming then when the material is finally released. -

MY suggestion on Company's... they may be called "Grand" but overhype will lead to massive rage on the forums.
Sorta like how the quest where going to be awesome, gamesaving, the best thing since sliced bread they would give us butt loads of sp/xp with voiced HQ cut scenes with long story arches displayed in a way no mmo has ever done before.... Yea the expectations where set a wee bit too high on those.
Until you told by square what exactly it will be or you actually see it in game assuming it will be uber awesome will only result in over hype and disappointment... this will make a decent update seem horrible due to falling way below expectations. -

I think public companies are going to be like Mercenaries for Hire.. when players or NPCs(quest wise) need help they apply/ask a certain company, who mayb a single linkshell owned or multiple linkshell merged, and they would help them for w/e the reward is, perhaps if the company gets famous - server wide - they might get special items or treatments.. jus my guess :P hehehe
