I've finally reached lvl 50 and need to start buying some gear.
Only problem is I have no money. Only about 50k.
What's the best way forward to make myself some gil? Crafting?

or farming items to sell
selling you're self on a conner of ul'dah works well to.
Spiritbond, Craft, Gather, Questing, Farming Mobs, all can generate income.
Crafters can sell finished products. Gatherers can sell materials. Battle classes can sell materia. That's the way people generate gil.
I'd say leveling up a DoL is pretty profitable. Especially if you have no intentions of Leveling a DoH.
If you decide to forego crafting, than DoL is all profit. Sell everything you get, even shards, and you'll get lots of money. Once you have fingerprints of the gods. go farm catalysts and you'll be rich. Get miner to 50 and farm cobalt ore and you'll be even more rich.
Keep an eye on provisioning missions too, as the prices of the seal turn in items for other nations can get you easy cash at an inflated price during that item's week.
I'm so tired of how many times this question has been asked. Seriously use the search function it's been asked and answered a million times.
Go to Windurst and farm Beehive Chips and Silk.
Spiritbonding and selling materia would be the best if you have a lot of time to exp at 50. Savage Might IV should sell for tons and you can get them fairly regularly if you are converting the right stuff. There are a few other materias that are high sellers as well. At the end of the day, this method is hit or miss, though.
If you're looking for regular income, I would suggest DoL as others have mentioned.
you want to gather if you want fast money remember crafted item can take forever to sell so you mite be sitting on them for a while gatherd items sell fast
Fishing ftw

Before I quit I was farming Sentinel gear dropped from "NMs" in the Strongholds. The 3 that I have found to be soloable (both in your ability to kill the mob and reaching its camp) are:
Lv52 Natalan Sentry: Drops Brass Natalan Coffer Key which opens the coffer nearby containing Sentinel's Gauntlets. 20% drop rate on key, 20% drop rate on the Gauntlets. Mysidia's prices were 500k~600k a few weeks ago.
Lv53 Natalan Sentry: Drops Copper Natalan Coffer Key which opens the coffer nearby containing Sentinel's Plate Belt. Same drop rates. 600k~700k last I checked.
Lv55 Zahar'ak Feretrar: Drops Brass Zahar'ak Coffer Key which opens the coffer nearby containing Sentinel's Sabatons. ~10% drop rate on key/item. Sold for about 2,000,000.
Of course, you can form parties to farm the remaining pieces which naturally will sell for much more due to the difficulty in obtaining them. Sentinel's Cuirass and Sentinel's Helm were last going for 5~7 million. Sentinel's Trousers I have yet to see, so..
As well, mobs' body parts that require incapacitation usually always sell well/decent. PGL's Concussive Blow will knock the horns off Aldgoats (East of Horizon) and Antelopes (Southeast of Tranquil). At one time, I was making 2m/hr. from incapacitating Green Megalocrab Shells when Crab Bow HQ was the hot item. The Wandering Wights in Mun-Tuy drop Steel Ingots fairly often, and there is a concentration of 10 of them in the upper Southwest corner. Wolf hides NPC for 600g per NQ each (1,200 HQ?), often dropped by a group of 6 just to the Southeast of Humblehearth.
Used to be that I would look at the most coveted gear ingame, find its materials and/or the item itself and go get it.
