Upheaval and Onslaught use

A question for other warriors out there, when do you find it most effective to use these abilities? I know there's a brief window at the end of an opener where I could (if I'm lucky) get one off after the six fell cleaves. Other than that I've been using them as filler if I hit 100 rage but have 6 seconds or less left on berserk CD. Is this a good way to do it or should I be using them more often?

Upheaval I use everytime it's up as long as it doesn't interfere with an upcoming berserk/IR combo I can fit it into. If you prep yourself and get yourself to 90 beast gauge, and have storms path as your next ability, you can activate berserk+IR, do a fel cleave, use your storms path, then use berserk to go from 85 to 75 to set up a perfect 6 cleave rotation. Even better if you can get to 100 beast gauge with path as your next ability as then you have enough gauge for both onslaught and upheaval. If you /really/ want you can get to 100 gauge, use heavy swing, then during onslaught-ir useage use onslaught instantly, continue with normal combo of maim-path as you burn up your gauge, and fit in a second onslaught near the end along with upheaval

Aside from the combo mentioned above, the only time I use onslaught is to cancel a knock-back or get to an enemy if they reposition further away

Movement with Onslaught. Upheaval more or less on CD, as long as it's also going to be available for Zerk+IR. Otherwise I just use Onslaught to manage gauge so I don't go over the cap.

As for Zerk+IR combo, you can fit two Onslaughts and an Upheaval in the combo along with your 6 FC's.

80 gauge > Storm's Eye combo (100) > Zerk > Heavy Swing+IR+Onslaught > Maim+Upheaval > FC > FC+Inf > FC > Storm's Path > FCx3+Onslaught.

Zerk will end right before the final FC, so if you're anal about that stuff you can delay the Zerk use until it's after the Heavy Swing and combo it with IR and Upheaval. It's a big cumbersome because that's 3 oGCD's at once, but the IR animation tends to be overwritten very easily so there's not a lot of clipping, at least for me at a 2.4 GCD.

Like the others said, Upheaval is basically more or less on cooldown. The rule of thumb there is: if berserk has LESS than 10s remaining on the cd, hold upheaval. The point of this is to always fit an upheaval in berserk.

Onslaught is a bit more complicated. You ALWAYS want to use Onslaught twice within an IR. Outside of IR, it's extremely situational. Basically, you're aiming to have 100 gauge when IR's cd is up, and at least 70 when berserk is up. You can use onslaught when you'd hit an awkward number(especially for an upcoming IR set) like 90 right before a path instead of a cleave if you had <9 seconds on berserk or IR's cd... but if you're using it to line up your gauge with IR, you're going to want to have that planned out at least 5 seconds in advance so it's off cd and you can use it in your IR combo. Or you can just say whatever and disregard it because we're kind of splitting hairs here that won't actually benefit you on the short term. You can not use onslaught outside of IR at all and be perfectly fine.

PLD's Spirits Within is an oGCD attack. Its damage is boosted by Fight or Flight. Weave it between GCDs.
WAR's Upheaval is an oGCD attack. Its damage is boosted by Berserk. Weave it between GCDs.

I'll just take it that way and I'm good to go~

Onslaught can be used as gap closer or an offensive oGCD just like Upheaval.

I'm curious how do you do your opener? I have one that is currently set up for 20 to 50 to 70 to 100. Do you find going for 80 more effective in transitioning to the rotation above?

upheaval is a 350 potency hit when at full health in deliverance, so you want to use this every time it comes off CD because it IS a dmg increase compared to a single fellcleave. As for onslaught, I use this very often because if you notice if you do not use this in between your zerk windows you will constantly waste BG in one of two ways: you will lose 20 BG because you just used onslaught once and you just did eye or butchers block and now you back at 100 BG and have time for one more combo just before zerk; OR your fellcleave and now you behind on BG for the upcoming zerk window.

In short I found it necessary to use onslaught 2-3 times between zerk windows because it is oGCD, making it easier to regain the perfect amount of BG just in time for your zerk windows. Fellcleave is a GCD and 50 BG, which will set you back even further in BG for your upcoming zerk window.

Oh and if you use onslaught for your main gauge dump instead of fellcleave you can actually go EYE path path path EYE in stead of the tradtitional EYE path path EYE, which is even more BG for the upcoming zerk

This. Onslaught's cd of 15 seconds allows you to generate 50 to 60 gauge within that time. Meaning, if zerk comes up in 20ish seconds, and you're already at 50 to 60 gauge, you better onslaught right now to ensure you can use it again to dump that last little bit of gauge before your zerk phase. There's no worse feeling than being capped on gauge, having nothing but FC to spend it on, and having your zerk coming up within a few globals.

A WAR that makes clever use of Onslaught is a sight to behold, honestly. Not a mechanic on the planet will keep them off the boss longer than it has to. Ask any melee DPS, the difference between a great parse and a fucking awesome parse is uptime. Tell me Mr. Anderson... What good is a Fell Cleave if you're not in melee range...

Using what I have up there, yes, going from 80 into SE combo+Zerk > HS+IR+Onslaught > Maim+Upheaval > then the rest works out best. This is because by the time you finish your last FC (IR will have ~1s left on it's timer then) your SE buff will have about 5s left on it. That's enough time to start over with an SE combo and refresh it right as it falls off.

My own observations show that AA damage is our second biggest source of damage, so maximum SE buff uptime would seem to be ensure our damage stays up. Hope this helps, and sorry for the delayed response!
