Please be Careful about the Labels used during Server Transfer

Thanks for the information. I'm glad to hear that you're allowing players to choose which server to transfer to, instead of force merging multiple servers into 1 with no choice.

One thing that worries me in your comment, though, was "In order for EU players to gather on the same server in a certain mass,..."

Please do *not* label or designate the remaining active Servers as ONLY 1 Language or not. That leads to SEGREGATION.

I understand you want to help EU players gather together, but if you end up with a Lodestone Post on the Final Fantasy Main Page that labels, for example:

• Besaid Server - ENGLISH
• Rabanastre Server - JAPANESE
• Mysidia Server - EUROPEAN
• Lindblum Server - JAPANESE
• etc.

You're going to end up indirectly (or directly) influencing and driving players into segregated Servers, where everyone on the server is mostly Japanese, or English-speaking, or European, etc.

One of the most unique and *enjoyable* facets about Square's MMOs (Final Fantasy XI and now XIV) is that you took the time to allow GLOBAL SERVERS. And gave us a solid Auto-Translator Tool to help us communicate (somewhat) with players of different languages.

I love the diversity, flexibility and colorfulness of Final Fantasy's MMO population! :) I love that I have plenty of Japanese, European and English-speaking friends from around the world and we can play at various times of the day.

I love that even at "odd hours" for me, there are players on and that there's activity going on.

If you end up labeling / categorizing the remaining active Servers in the manner above, players will be influenced to just go to servers that do speak "English" or "Japanese" or are "European" mainly.

If you have to keep Labels (to "help EU players gather" as you stated), one solution to encourage your current diversity is to then add a "GLOBAL" Label, so continuing with the example above:

• Bahamut Server - GLOBAL
• Odin Server - GLOBAL
  
• Besaid Server - ENGLISH
• Rabanastre Server - JAPANESE
• Mysidia Server - EUROPEAN

He didn't say anything about labeling the servers. He said only that they will allow people to pick the world they want so that similar people will have the chance to gather together.

When hes talking about EU players, think of it more as people who play during EU primetime

so you may see the serves which peak around midnight Pacific time merging, those at 8am pacific merging, and so on


the timeframe you play in is moreso a good basis for this then who plays from where

Yes, but what would the method be to notify "EU players to gather" on common servers? One real possibility is using a label or descriptor to let players know, right?

I hope they have a good method that doesn't involve using language / country as the method to convey this information, but if they were going with this method, I wanted to post my feedback regarding it.

The method is going to be servers with low population will get to choose a server with high population to join, nothing more, nothing less. (from his words). We the players will decide to compile a specific language server or not, just like we branded Besaid as the RP server, the players are the ones at fault for this and the players will be the ones at fault for making servers more specific tailored to one language than another.

Well put! You state your interpretation of the situation, your feelings about that, and give a possible solution, all the while being civil. Posts like this are awesome.

What about people from high population servers who wish to transfer to a world with high pop of EU players, I understand if that cannot be implemented right away but I would like to see it within a few months of the merge, otherwise it would be leaving some players by the wayside.

Hi viion,

That would be fine. But his statement doesn't explicitly state how he would convey this information. Of course the players can "police themselves" or distribute information themselves here on the forums, but I don't think SE is going to take the time to do Server Transfers, especially

The full details are coming in mid-January as he states, but by then, it will be Official language, posted on Lodestone for all to see. And if he chose the method of using Labels (Language / Country, etc.), then by then it will be too late.

I did not read it like this nore see it that way. The way I see it is exactly how it is stated.

It will be like XI's current transfer, only the low populated servers will be given an option. Its all very key worded.

That is how I see it anyway. So if I go "Ok, I think Lindblum is more EU, so I will choose that server" and everyone will get a choice. The problem I see (or i could just be wrong) is what if no one chooses, they cant do a random selection. I just think it would be a bit foolish for him to label servers, but i also would not mind because I do prefer and only play with English speak players.

Please do. I am tired of feeling completely cut off from other people who speak my primary language. Yes it leads to segregation, but it is a better situation in the long run. It leads to better party search functionality, better pick up groups, and overall a better community.

This is exactly what I hope to see. I do not want you to IP lock regions though. There are people from various countries, who speak several languages, who would be welcome on a server if they can speak the appropriate primary language.

I actually find this to be one of SE's most significant weakness in their MMOs. They are spending valuable development time working on auto-translate functions and capabilities when it could be spent elsewhere in a much more pertinent area. You even say in your post that the auto-translate is "somewhat" useful. In other words, you really can only do limited functions with people from another primary language.

I fail to see how you have friends from another language (especially if they can't speak english well), when you can't even say simple phrases like "How was your day?" Apparently having an emotional connection is not a requirement when you make "friends."

This works. I am all for having both options in many aspects of the game, and this is one of them. I do want to see a labeled English server however that I can jump on and not worry about when I send a tell to someone if they are French, Japanese, German, or otherwise.

In addition to language labeled servers, I would even be in favor of TIME ZONE labeled servers if the population is large enough to sustain it. I am in the US-Central time zone, and most of the members of my linkshell are from US-Pacific time zone. Playing with them and coordinating appropriate times to log in for events is difficult.

With that out of the way, I do agree with PV that the post reads very little into language/region based servers. I think this is simply a temporary move because they realize that when XIV goes subscription-fee play, a significant portion of the population will stop playing.

Yep.

I think the language designated servers will be an issue for 2.0, and it has been mentioned earlier (maybe in the PDF's even?)

I don't think it's Yoshida's intent to make any regional servers yet; he just used an example of EU players so that maybe they can reach out to the servers that are not going away to see which one has the biggest EU population to ensure they will have enough people to play together with.

I imagine the same will happen with NA and JP players whose servers are going away. They're going to reach out to the community to see which of the servers are staying has populations that have an abundance of their language speakers.

You're welcome to your opinion (I respect that) and I'm welcome to mine.

To answer your question about how I have friends from another language, I think English-speakers have been fortunate to have the English language (even in limited form) as widespread as it is around the world (and I can speak some Japanese).

So I've met players from Europe (Spain, France, Germany) and many Japanese players as well, and using Auto Translate, and them communicating to me via limited English, and hours of EXP Parties, emotes, helping each other out with various adventures / fights in this game, we've become friends.

Ultimately, like I said, I think at least using a "Global" Label for some servers - if they go with a Labeling Route - would be a fair compromise for all involved.

Besaid is not JP. It's the unofficial NA RP server. =P

Seriously, I picked Besaid because of it's large English-speaking population (I'm sorry, at the end of the day, I just want to be able to talk to someone in my native language and not get frustrated because the auto-translator doesn't say what I need it to say).

I see very few JP shouts on Besaid in comparison to the large number of English shouts.

And Tibian's post is pretty long, so I won't quote it, but I agree 100%. I'm all in favor of designating language-based servers for pretty much all the reasons he mentioned.

Those who would find themselves on a server labeled "not for them" would be forced to leave. It is telling those people they need to find a new server, because this server is for Japanese players, or North American players only. Anyone who would stay would inevitably encounter people telling them "you don't belong here, you have your own servers".

Honestly I'd almost rather they force merged servers, because then I'd still get to be with my friends on my server who have opted to wait for 2.0 to start playing again. I don't have a good way to get a hold of many of them. Was relying on my friendlist, to catch up with them again once they started back up. (The Friends list which will likely be hosed when we merge all over the place I'm guessing?).

But, since they are saying that is not what they are going to do, and that people will individually be picking servers, please don't label them by nationality.. If you must label them at all, label them by their peak times as that is the actual useful piece of information.. I don't typically get to play during peak hours for the country I live in, but I still want people to play with.

You were/are wrong. Sorry but search results show that Besaid has a higher Japanese population during their peak time, than the reported English speaking population during NA prime time.

So Besaid is clearly a Japanese server. With labeling I guess it would clear up such confusion like you being on a server where you don't "belong".

I think if they are ever going to give regional servers they should be fresh servers so people like you aren't forced off of your server.

She's right actually, Besaid is an English server. It certainly may have a decent JP population, but that does NOT dispute the fact it is still and/or also an English server.

I have made many friends over the months, European, Japanese, American, Arab and no doubt others. Personally I would like to stay with my friends and would prefer this to be easy rather than require detailed planning. Love the game btw :)

Perhaps in order to counteract the lag issues, Yoshi-P is thinking about giving the servers physical locations in NA and the EU as well as JP.

It would certainly help EU and NA players to know which servers are closest to them when choosing.

It would be nice to have servers that we located outside Japan, other games have them. Maybe its a cost thing or maybe there is some other reason they dont do it but it something they should consider more strongly. As for the diversified servers idc which way they go, I frankly have no issues with ppl from other areas. Less server lag would be nice but you become accustomed to the extra challance it can bring.

The only good thing is that there would be less need of asking ppl to use auto-trans and frankly it would be easier to get groups. Yrs of xi taught me well that alot of jp players tend to not want to play with non-jp players and when you have a high jp population it makes it tough at times, esp when you are just starting out. We havent really had this issue yet in xiv but I attribute that to the low population, take what you can get, sort of thing. No disrespect of course it was just an issue in xi for alot of eng speaking players. I couldnt imagine how bad it would be for french or german speakers if they had very little english skills.

I was rly hoping for a merge and not a transfer....... I hope i can get my LS to join the same server as we have PPL from all over the world. This is going to destroy many LSs but i guess what has to b done will b done.

SE should try balance the regional IPs for each server.
For instance balance the server with 33%JP 33%NA 33%EU with max players at 2,000. Which would give prime time for said region about 660 players.

When transferring suggest the server the player should transfer to to balance the number, but allow the player to choose any server regardless.

This way the servers will have players at all times of the day without too much dead time. (loading a server with 70% EU players would impact non EU players on said server)

This would protect the server from being language dependent or time zone dependent.

Think for a second.

You make a fair enough point about language barriers, but the very real possibility of segregated servers that OP gives splits apart North America from Europe which is a pretty big deal. I'm from the UK and 90% of the people I know in-game are American or Canadian. There's no language barrier there.

Plus, our time-zones crossover plenty. When I'm playing in the afternoon, evening or especially at night there are plenty of Americans and Canadians online.

Nothing needs to change here, the global servers are just fine how they are. The only thing we need is more people populating the servers from all regions.

How would they go about doing that? If they wanted it split perfectly three ways like that then they would have to tear apart the current population.

THIS. It doesn't need to be segregated by language but by ping. It somewhat kills two birds with one stone and then quell the inevitable "The Japanese got my pop cause their latency is less than mine!!".

What SE needs to do is for now do a forced merger. Players should not that the choice of what server they want to go to. Even when 2.0 comes how SE needs to go back to letting the servers choose what world you will be on. What people dont understand is if it is 1 region that is on that server is that the peak time will be same time everyday vs a global server peak times will vary, and there will always be players to play w no matter the time you come on. Also if SE segragates the servers what dose that actually tell players? I enjoy playing with everyone from all over and to me this option is bad idea. Leave all servers global, do not give players the choice of servers as of yet, that is something best left till the game is a few years old. Take low population servers merge them to one server again no choices. If players still want to go to another server charge them a fee to do this.

Well...you know...it could be that JP, GR & FR players don't want to play with "Ugly Americans"? Perhaps it is they who are asking for Labeled/Segregated servers?

Personally, I prefer playing with non-English speaking peeps because Americans shout/say some pretty stupid sh*t in game and it gets annoying and breaks my "Immersion" in the game. ;>P (#1 reason why I disliked WoW & SWToR is just as bad)

My only concern with server merging is that after 1.19 US prime-time hours were unplayable to me because of ridiculous server lag. Maybe increase server capacity. Example server capacity is 4000 only allow 3500 players on that server would make it way better. (numbers are just for example to show a definite ratio)

Servers should be organized into regions by timezone. There should be servers slotted for JST, GMT, EST, PST, and any other popular ones. This would have the effect of also removing some of the language barrier issues that currently exist.

You can't find players in your timezone all the time because no server encourages people from a certain timezone to create characters there.

This is the same problem the rest of the game's progression aspects have. No direction for new players. They're simply left in the dark about what the difference between Besaid and Figaro server is. If you were a new player trying this game out now, wouldn't you want to know where the most people in your timezone are server-wise? If you answer "no" to this question, you're either in denial or a SE-white knight.
