Is it bothersome? I've never heard of this problem in arr or hw.
Yeah honestly, I've never really complained, and learned to work around it, but hell... this change would be AMAZING!
It's not a problem when I played with a mouse and keyboard, as you could just click a monster in the direction you wanted to use Overpower.
But now that I have a controller, it's a pain in the ass sometimes. One part that comes to mind is when the monsters in Zurvan start to spawn, the fact that you have to target all over the place until you're at the right one, is just really annoying and frustrating. Especially when you miss one and have to chase after it as it goes off.
This is a great idea, surprised I haven't seen it on the forums sooner. I don't think DRK needs a target for their emnity AOE and I could be wrong but pretty sure paladins don't need one for flash either so why does Warrior need a target?
The reason it wasn't brought up before is because we could use Flash on top of Overpower so we had a way to get aggro from the monsters we missed when using the move. Now that we can't use it, now it's become a problem. Especially with bigger models.
If you turn off face target, you actually do somethign similar to this, of course it makes other issues pop up.
I dont usually see enemies sitting still long enough for a mouse target to work.
I actually find tab target quicker/more effective, if u tilt the camera down more, as then you have a better means to select the target you want on the 1st button press.
Forget that, just give us a replacement for Flash. Problem solved.
Because at the moment, our aoe threat (save for threat generating abilities, which does not work well for prolonged engagements) is tied to our TP, whereas the other two have it tied to MP, meaning that after spending some time focus combo-ing, they can resume spamming AoEs. Warrior can't.
Removing the need for a target won't solve all our problems, because enemies STILL won't gather up nicely for us. Summoners get annoyed when you drag things out of their shadowflare, but we have to do that in order to keep hitting them with overpower.
As an alternative, they could remove the stance requirement from Steel Cyclone and make it cost TP instead of gauge. It pretty much never gets used as it is because Decimate is just hands down better, but it's also an iconic ability (you see it in the ARR opening cinematic), so you can't simply remove it. This would give you an alternative to picking up adds around you in the absence of Flash.
Better yet, could we remove the requirement from all, especially Doom Spike and Sonic Thrust?...
Yeah, nobody ever uses Steel Cyclone. Everyone knows Overpower is the superior AoE skills for generating enmity.
Wait what's that? You wanted to do BIG PULLS?! Oh yes, hang on, let me switch into Deliverance so that I can hit 10 monsters with Decimate before dying, because TO HELL with my healer!
Instead of removing costs from Steel Cyclone and making it overpowered, why not be grateful that Overpower does the highest damage of all the AoE enmity generators? -_- Steel Cyclone is already a great skill you can use after 2 Overpowers to SOLIDIFY enmity and practically make sure you won't even have to worry about it again. As it stands, after doing 2 Overpowers and 1 Steel Cyclone, you're good to go.
All "Cone/Line" attacks are like this:
Doom Spike
Overpower
Sonic Thrust
Rockbreaker
Dark Passenger
Only radial AoEs like Flash/Unleash/Ring of Thorns/Total Eclipse can be used without a target
umm..
Maybe if they change it to a circle aoe I'm good to not have a target.
But if stay a cone aoe I personally prefer to target, another solution will be to increase the range you can cast it an how far back the flames go(skill range)
It feels weird on my mind trying to imagine how it will work a look if no target is selected.
I don't think that overpower needs to be a circle AoE. Even in the three 70 dungeons right now you rarely find yourself surrounded by mobs. The roughly 180 degrees we get as warriors is more than enough. As for the steel cyclone argument, the potency is more if you use infuriate. It's likely a moot point right now though as I doubt SE is going to make that big a job change in anything short of another patch like 4.0 I've been using Steel Cyclone on trash dungeon pulls with an infuriate and it works to help cut down mobs a little faster. Overpower is definitely the best AoE option for anything more than 2 mobs though.
If we really want to argue for something that is a radial AoE it won't have the damage of overpower. The Dark Knight skill does 50 potency each according to SE's Job Guide, I know Flash does none according to the same job guide, just blinds enemies. Overpower does a whopping 120 potency, that's over double Dark Knights hits and easily the best potency hit for 3 gdc's if you have more than two enemies sitting in front of you. (BB combo does 620 potency base in a single combo (3 gcd's), Overpower in 2 gdc's would be 720 in against 3 enemies).
