Hallowed Ground = Uselss

This skill is by far the most useless skill of all paladin skills. I can't even consider it a "Oh Sh**" button any more because a skill that is suppose to be instant, really is not instant. The animation should come after the skill has been applied to user, not the other way around. It's very sad when you see the icon float above your head but does not get applied towards your status only to die.

I feel this skill is a wasted use when you try and make a judgement that may or may not save the party, so say i'm down to 2k life and I decide to use HG just in case my healer is having to dodge mechanics or whatnot. I press the assigned button, watch the skill activate and still die. Im dealing with 95-120 ping outside of current "DDOS attacks".

So outside of the skills "instant" delay is there really any use to this skill? It really seems like a waste to make a judgement call when you're sitting at 15k and have to make a 50/50 decision if your healer is going to be able to heal you before the next attack/attacks.

In short I honestly feel that the tooltip for HG needs to be updated to something in the aspect of cast time of 3-5 seconds, since it's not a instant skill. Unless you have a ping of less then 50 the skill is not instant.

It's not an Oh shit button. It can be used that way, but it's a tank buster mitigation button. You use it at a specific time in a fight that is always in the same place and is usually preceded by a long cast bar that gives you plenty of time to react.

I grouped with two paladins today for EX Primals and Deltascape who didn't use any Holy Spirit at all.

HG use should be planned. An emergency button is the wrong way to use it.

Use it on that giant pull you know is coming. Use it on the tankbuster to reset your stacks and prevent a forced swap.

It's an "I ignore this mechanic" button. Use it as such.

Edit: Having said that, I agree the delay is murder.

I would have to agree with the above. I will usually plan on using HG... usually... unless I get one of those healers who likes to let me almost drop dead then sometimes I use it on pulls if I don't like how low I'm getting.

But anyways, that said, while fighting bosses/trials, I will save it for the inevitable RNG-based bad luck scenario where I know I cannot dodge what the boss is about to do next. Sometimes I get trapped against the edge of the arena, and the boss goes "NOW I'm going to cover THAT side of the arena!" *HG* haha, nope.


It gives you extra breathing room, if you see that huge AoE painted and you doubt you're going to get out of it in time.

Another awesome time to use it, is when several DPS have taken bad hits and they are all 30% or less health and you want to give your healer a break and/or time to heal the DPS up before they die. If they are spamming heals on you, it's harder for them to heal the DPS. But if you pop HG, they got several seconds where they can just ignore you and focus on the DPS, especially the ones eating mechanics and AoEs.

it was already used to cheese mechs before, and now it can be abused even more. you dont know how broken cover + hallowed ground is. how can anyone call this skill useless...

I thought it didn't work with cover. It used to ignore Susano Stormsplitter. don't know if it's used to ignore Chalanta pull of light though.

I mean, it's broken in the fact that you still take the full 80% damage from cover. Hallowed doesn't interact with it.

As to the OP that's because you're using it wrong. You should never be popping it THAT close to the buster, it's a cd. But yeah hg does suck that cd is ridiculous. It half be shorter.

Are You really complaining about 10s invulnerability god mode with no downside?

Living dead is a suicide button if your healer don't have tons of instant to burn or have an hard time with the fight/party.

With HG they just ignore you to fill up/ress/dish dps out.

With Hallowed Ground you can completely block Susano's tank buster and don't even have to swap. None of the other two tanks can do that.

With Hallowed Ground, your HP doesn't drop to zero after you get hit with whatever it is you're probably trying to dodge. Meaning you don't give healers a heart attack and they don't have to scramble afterwards to try and heal you back to an acceptable HP level.

Not to mention it doesn't get you stuck in the same place like Holmgang. Not to mention it doesn't kill you if you don't get healed like Living Dead. Not to mention it lasts for TEN - FREAKIN' - SECONDS??? Hello?????

The cost of these benefits is the high cooldown. It would be considered THE BEST invulnerability ability, the cooldown is what makes it balanced. So there's no reason at all to complain.

Defensive cooldowns are used to prevent emergency situations.

the oh shit bottom is shelltron.....HG is the "I don't give a damn fxxx about you(boss) and the rest of world for 10sec.....btw, when I was farming susano I got a bad luck run, just swap out from the tank buster, arrow marker and thunder cloud on north....I went to the side then I see atleast 3 members got knock up and low hp. I hold in the thunder aoe, pop HG and eat the boom from stack mechanic alone, 0 hp loss....felt so good.....

Ill say hallowed is in a shakey second place for invulns with holmgang being the bwst and living being the worst. Its all due to time on this one hallowed is a stupin long cd so you cN only use it once a fight unless you pop it really early in a really long encounger. I can use it like 3 or 4 times so out of usage sake it is way way way better. All these are are cooldown and hallowed is the one you can use the least which is why I'll put it 2nd. The effect is the best but it's just not worth it for activations per fight.

Yes, that's what I meant. But if you look at what Hallowed Ground can do, the way it completely BLOCKS all the damage AND doesn't make you stuck in one place, you can clearly see it's the best skill of them all. But considering what it's actually USED FOR, though, Holmgang wins by far.

Jesus. What a dumb post. HG is freaking amazing. Use it proactively instead of reactively and you can do stupid things with it.

As was pointed out earlier, defensive cooldowns are meant to be used proactively, not reactively. Tank deaths occur when you don't predict damage patterns correctly.

Hallowed is the most powerful tank invulnerability in the game, by a large margin. It completely negates incoming damage, meaning that you don't have to reach 1 HP for the effect to trigger, and your healers can ignore you for the complete duration. It also negates any effects that are triggered by damage, such as vulnerability stacks, giving them time to reset. This allows you to bypass intended game mechanics, such as forced tank swaps. Even historically, in fights where PLD was at a strict disadvantage, the question of "can we just Hallowed this mechanic to make progression simpler?" was always a consideration.

You'd think that this sort of thing would have been addressed and rebalanced a long time ago. The obvious solution to this would have been to let Hallowed simply prevent death at 1 HP like the other two tank invincibility moves, so that you can't cheese mechanics with it that you can't on other tanks.

If you EVER thought of it like this, you are doing it wrong. It's best thought of in advance, planned so one can maximize healer DPS, or cheese a mechanic, or avoid a tank swap. It is not FFXI's Invincible. You don't use other CDs in that way, and you shouldn't think of this as any different.

What. But all the tanks have been designed around spamming one action for about 20s now.

Hallowed Ground is amazing. I love it when a PLD pulls like three packs of mobs and pops it so I can DPS the whole time it is up without having to worry about his HP.

I don't run static groups or savage raids or anything, so I don't usually use it in a planned fashion, but I do use it as a sort of "get out of jail (mechanic) free" card.

Second tank is down and can't tank swap in time or something? HG.
Healer needs to hard cast a res on someone important, like 2nd healer/tank? HG.
Party is getting wrecked by AE damage and it looks like the healers might need a little breathing room to heal them all up? HG.
etc, etc.

Hallowed Ground, Rage of Halone, Sheltron, Benediction, heals an shields in general. Surecast, Manaward, even Swiftcast sometimes. Even telegraphs, if we gettin' technical. How many o' ya've fumbled onna these 'cause the universe in which ya pressed that shite exists a second in tha past o' the universe ya performed tha action in? Issa lame an' completely unintuitive design what stinks up tha whole combat system.

Sure we're all veterans here, an' ya probably all know how it works by now, so e'en if it happens again yer never as dissapointed as ya were tha first time. But even if ye get used ta eatin shite yer still eatin' it. My condolences ta tha OP an' tha sich that left 'im shitter-shattered enough ta make this post inna first place.

That's hardly unique to PLD, DRK's living dead has a similar short cast animation and Hallowed Ground is infinitely better than Living Dead (Which really IS an 'oh shit' button, there is almost no other situation in which you'd use it)

I use it when I notice other party members are taking a lot of damage (ignoring AOE and what not), it gives the healer time to focus on them and ignore me for a short time. I find it very useful.

Here is the deal with HG,this is not by any shape or form a oh shit button.it is a tank buster.I will goive you an example.in Susano extreme,you can activate HG at the begginong of stormsplitter cast not only it will negate 100% of damage but it will also prevent you from getting that slashing dbuff.delaying the tank swap
So in conclusion,look at it as a planned ability,instead of a emergency skill and you will realize its full potential.

Man, PLDs really reaching to try and get buffs at this point.
