People will always flock to the path of least resistance. just be happy there is something like potd in place to allow you to not have to wait on tanks.
Fates could definitely be scaled better for solo levelers though
You could do Frontlines as long as you're not a lazy leech who does nothing for free CO.
Frontlines is a blast if you put in effort.
That should say XP not CO (ugh phone autocorrect).
You can also pick up your daily HW hunts, and do them while you wait for queues. They're pretty decent EXP while waiting for your dungeon(s)
And while you do the HW hunts, pop in and visit the beast tribes. You can get a full level every couple of days with hunts and beast tribe quests alone, let alone the odd challenge log and FATE.
Some additional options for EXP:
- Challenge log; although weekly, provides a solid boost when coupled with dungeon runs.
- Frontlines; the actual best option post-60.
- Side-quests; Stormblood ones in particular offer 100,000+ EXP
Alternatively, you can try tossing up a PF yourself for a fate party. I find those have better luck sense there are bound to be others thinking the same as you, "Oh, guess no one's doing fates."
I would pick up a gathering class and gather until your duty finder pops. Even then listen to music or stream something to chill to.
You mentioned you were queueing for The Aery. While this is good if you want to dungeon grind, as a DPS you have to expand your options if you don't want a horrible wait. At 55, you should include Sohm Al and Dusk Vigil. You might also want to include the two fastest level 50 dungeons, but which are best escapes me right now.
Even without a Roulette bonus, most dungeons(if you do the one closest to your level) will give more EXP than PotD or FATEs. Yes the queue might take some time to pop, but that's when you go out and do FATEs/hunts(the ones outside the Forgotten Knight in Foundation; they give up to 34k or 35k per monster at level 66/67).
And hopefully you have the FC XP bonus to help things go even faster.
There are Beast Tribes and Hunts, if you can keep your gear up-to-date (otherwise the mobs will eventually get too hard to kill). Not a huge bonus, but you do get a small chunk daily out of doing them.
As someone said above, some of the Challenge Logs result in Class XP, such as the FATE ones.
And, well, I know it is boring, but Palace of the Dead is probably the best way to go about it. Or, ask your FC to see if there's a tank willing to carry you into queues. Or maybe pay a tank to. *shrug*
Folks already mentioned Challenge Logs, but one I'd like to bring to attention in particular is Guildhests. Do one or two Guildhest Roulettes each day and the challenge log will give you two decent shots of exp, one after three roulettes and the other after ten. Since other people do know about this nice challenge log, queue times are short even for DPS and the Guildhest you usually wind up in is "Under the Armor", the easiest Guildhest, which takes roughly 30-40 seconds to complete. Rather than doing all ten at once, though, I do recommend spreading them out over the week so you get the daily bonus. The Roulette bonus is not great on its own, but adding them up results in a decent number, as well.\
Heavensward Beast Tribe quests are also very good exp for the time spent (and you can do them while in queue for something else!), and if you max out a tribe, the exp bonus is greatly increased.
Personally I do all the roulettes daily... it's good for about a level a day. I try to group with FC members when possible to speed up my dps queues. I also will dungeon spam while doing other things when waiting for a queue to pop. Leveling WHM on my main and summoner and samurai on two of my alts.
i don't do POTD or fates for the most part other than perhaps for a challenge which often give pretty good experience.
I lagged REALLY bad last night doing my first rou(50/60 as PLD). During final fight of Keeper I got DCed for 2min, came back and zero lag the rest of the night. Before the DC all my rotations were breaking because it was a 3-4second delay between the button push, and hit connecting. And sometimes not actually connecting though the next one in line was glowing. Circle of Scorn animation going off...but no damage, but on CD.
I can understand people being burnt out with POTD, but it is still a faster option then most of the other ways barring Frontlines. In the amount of it time it take you to complete one dungeon with the queue time wait, you could have done 3 POTD and got more experience as well. Just put on a movie/show/anime on your phone/second monitor/tv and grind the night away.
Here's what you do:
1. Start in Foundation. Pick up the hunts at the Forgotten Knight board.
2. Exit to Coerthas West and do all the hunts there.
3. Fly to Sea of Clouds via north Coerthas West exit. Do the beast tribe there and all the hunts.
4. Fly back to Coerthas West. Exit to Forelands. Do all the hunts there and the beast tribe.
5. Exit from there to Churning Mists. Do all the hunts there.
6. Return to Forelands. Exit to Hinterlands. Do the hunt there.
7. Tell to Azys. Do the hunt there.
8. You now have 6 beast dailies left. Tele to two of the other beast tribes and knock those out.
You've probably just picked up 1/2 a level.
Could do what I do and daily hunt while waiting.
Would love exp buff for 50-60 for dungeon so people can still run them even been shouting/yelling for help or offering 50k per run and still get turned down and points to POTD :(
What are these ridiculous queue times people keep mentioning? None of my dps queues have been 50 minutes since weeks 1 & 2, now I wait 25 minutes at most. And levelling I go do Fates, hunts or craft while I'm waiting. I will not touch POTD with a 50 foot pole.
My NIN is 55 right now, and almost every night I do Roulettes with my BFF, and I gain a level (or more than half of one) by the end of the night. If you want decent XP, just queue for dungeons/roulettes. Like I'm already halfway to 56 at this point.
POTD is boring yet you want a fate party???
Heavensward hunts are like 600k exp a day, and then you have your Vanu Vanu and Vath beast tribe dailies for a boost while you're in queue as well.
...WHY?! I get it that PotD is brain dead easy(I used it to farm Tomes when I needed them, so I know)...but WHY for so many levels? The only time I will EVER go in there now is if I do need to cap tomes for the week and it's almost reset time(it is rather quick), or I need like 400k to get a level. And then I ignore that hell until the real hell freezes over.
The answer is simple really; I wanted the most time efficient method to 60. Unless I'm missing something that method is, unfortunately, palace. For me personally, it wasn't so bad. My buddy wanted to level red mage as well and considering we have near enough identical work schedules, we pretty much went in together everytime. So tou know, watching paint dry vs watching paint dry with a buddy over some good conversation.
exactly that, however that only works, if you have one character higher than the character you're trying to level. If you try to do 50-60 on a new account/character for example, oh boi you're in for a treat, because it will take quite some time. But if it's a new character/account, you still have ARR MSQ and HW MSQ, that would be quicker in that case.
Fates are so much easier with having at least 2 people then solo. SO you can do fates and beast tribes as you wait for queues if you do not like POTD. Just find someone that would like to tag along with you.
Just out of curiosity, doesn't your FC have some kind of role rotation parties? or have friends for a role rotation party? IF PotD are too boring or unreliable, you don't like PvP, Hunts / beastman aren't your thing, Fates get on your nerves why not just do a rotation party? make a static...
Dungeon grinding seems to be the fastest way from 50-70, I'll give you PotD 50-60 if your bored, but mainly I would only do it until 30's to 50's.
It's not hard, have no friend make a PF rotation party as well.... all you really need is a Tank friend. Don't have a tank job leveled up, Raise one.
Turn on some music or netflix and just burn through POTD asap. It's the most efficient way to 60 as DPS, like it or not.
Dunno about tha rest of ya but Palace o' tha Dead is, if ya go with randoms, about 20 minutes.
Frontlines 're about 10, and two together is far more experience than one palace run.
Doin' 'em ta level tanks, healers an dips I found 'em about the same, equitable wit' an on-level dungeon thassabout 30 minutes.
I think tha real shame issat 50-60 leves is AWFUL fer combat, 'specially since ya gotta go back ta Ishgard between trips. No leves fer combat past 60 is absolute wank, too. FATES are also pretty shite, though tha new bonus experience ones're nice. How come that ain't retroactive too? Would do a lot ta get FATE trains goin' again at low levels, ah think.
Just do PvP. Yes it's not as fast as PoTD but at least you are getting exp in those 50 minutes you would be waiting for a dungeon and it's actually fun. That's what I did for my RDM and what I've been doing for my SAM. I only do roulettes with some friends everyday if it's possible and the rest I PvP. I am lvl 63 SAM now and I think I started around 5-6 days ago. For the record, leveling and trials roulette are the fastest queues for DPS. So when I'm solo I only bother with those two. I don't even bother queuing up for specific dungeons. I only did it once for the Vault and that's it. I haven't touched PoTD for any of them. Then again I find PvP fun so maybe that's why spamming it is bearable for me.
If you're having huge wait times for leveling, you may want to check to see how many languages you have selected. Unless they changed it, more languages can shoehorn you into waiting longer for more people that selected a less common language.
