Scholar needs a spammable AoE damage spell

The fact that Scholar doesn't have a spammable AoE damage spell seems like a huge oversight. White Mage has Holy, Astro has Gravity. Even Paladin got one in 4.0! Just dropping Bane and Shadowflare then single target Broil spamming between heals feels really underwhelming.

It seems Scholar is moving towards a fire theme with Broil spells so why not something like Meltdown or Blaze?

That or, as a throwback to blizzard ii, give all casters and healers the option for aoe break. Pre50 ASTs and pre45 WHM could easily find it useful! The animation is pretty neat.

Break: cast time 2 seconds. Recast 2.5. MP cost equal to 1.33x Broil II. Deals unaspected damage with a potency of 65 to target and all nearby targets.
Additional Effect: Heavy +20%
Duration: 15s

At 65 potency it maintains the same relative weight of 50 vs 170 from blizzard II vs broil.

I'm really beginning to wonder if the devs just hate scholars. They nerfed us so bad in SB and took out our only AOE attack. Maybe they just want 2 healers, white mage and Asto in the game.

Cross role selection is already almost mandatory enough as is, id really rather not have to wonder what the heck ill drop for new break or have to swap back and forth after I cast protect at the start of every dungeon. Would rather the devs just do it right than cause more of a headache for us. Plus 65 potency when the lowest holy/gravity can hit for is 100? Shouldn't ask for inferior abilities either, reach for the moon cuz you're likely to get something in-between anyway. ;p

I feel like replacing Silent Dusk with a heavy aoe dot with a short petrify or freeze would be a good option. Gets rid of a very underused ability while bringing aoe dps up. Would have to be a good dot though for a 40s cd. Since Selene represents the moon side of the fairies, something like Cessation Dusk could be cool.

Agreed with the OP, this strikes me as a massive oversight on SE's part. AST gameplay pre 50 has always been horrible despite it having a solid set of abilities, condemning SCHs to the same dungeon gameplay at the end game is just lame and smells of a team that has little to no understanding of how healers truly play.

Just give the SCH back Miasma II but tweak it a little so it suits the role better. I dunno, make it a green burst bubble instead and perhaps have the DOT inflict a short term Blind effect to targets nearby so it's actually useful for the Tank taking aggro and also to prevent it from going in to Break (with Heavy) territory.

SCH now has a lv40 Job skill gap like WHM does. This is a perfect place to put the AoE spell, or shift Sacred Soil down a slot and put the AoE spell at 45.

Pretty much this. Getting synced at or below 50 for an AST SUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS. No aoe at all.

Except for WHM, they moved cure 3 from level 42 to the level 40 job quest (ie: CNJ can no longer learn or use cure 3), but yeah SCHs could use an AoE spell there at level 40 or 45.

I'm pretty surprised they didn't make a new role skill that did the same damages as Blizzard II with a new name so all the healers had access to AoEs at any level even if WHM and AST get a better one as they level.

I used to use Blizzard II a lot on my White Mage in low level dungeons and Scholars needs an AoE badly :(

I been saying for the longest time all they have to do for SCH/SMN is change Tri-Bind into 80-100 potency and make it Arcanist rather than SMN specific.

Just give me Miasma 2 back and fix Bane. Hard casting DOTs on every mob is so fun and engaging, but seriously -- it isn't.

Yeah people have been suggesting basically this for years, but all they've managed to do is rename it from the old tri-disaster(lol). I guess a 60 potency aoe would just be too OP.

The problem with SCH not having an AoE is it promotes toxic tanks.

Healers get more damage/potency so whatever you can do to make your healer's life comfortable: using cooldowns, self-healing, tank stance, etc. is also the best thing you can do for DPS even if it costs you a little bit of your own DPS as a tank. You should only be doing things like using your DPS stance if your healer is DPSing full time anyway.

The exception is Scholar. They just sit there being useless in large pulls if you're not requiring healing so the objectively best way to play is to turn off your tank stance and go ham and make them deal with whatever the consequences of that are.

In fact, you see mini-guides for jump potion tanks telling them exactly that.

This is not tank players being bad people, this is the way the developers designed Scholars to be played in dungeons. It is the logical and only possible outcome of not giving Scholar an AoE filler and it's terrible for the community.

Knowing how Square likes to play with SCH's, they'll say Okay.... then make it cost aetherflow stacks. When asked why, they'll say its because we have dissipation.
