When am I supposed to use Total Eclipse?

Since this skill does not have added enmity, when am I supposed to use this? Is there a certain number of enemies where this becomes the optimal ability to use?

It just seems weird to me that they wouldn't replace flash with this, flash is such a boring skill besides the blind effect.

It sounded to me like an AoE Provoke. So, use it like you would Provoke, on multiple targets?

When you get a big pack of mobs (more than 3) you use Flash first a few times to gain enmity and then spam Total Eclipse and your other off GCDs like Circle of Scorn and Spirits Within. It's actually really nice that PLD can help out with a bit of dmg now on huge pulls.

Is its enmity gain good enough to not need flash? That's what I wanna know

Initially no, think of it as the AOE equivalent to royal authority

Whenever there's 3+ mobs and you're out of MP, use Total Eclipse.

In terms of pure potency, it's better to use Holy Spirit than Total Eclipse unless there's 4 or more targets (5 or more if buffed by Requiescat), but ofc, you only get to use it a couple of times because you need the MP for Flash, and you'll also need MP for the next pull to keep hate. You'll have to make that resource management decision yourself.

Flash is an amazing skill BECAUSE of the blind effect. Having both flash and total eclipse is amazing. Flash for very high aoe threat and defense, then spam eclipse for damage on aoe pulls. It doesn't have added enmity but flash has a lot, and if you're in shield oath it multiplies your enmity anyway.

The simple answer would be "as much as you can on aoe pulls without losing threat, running out of tp for following pulls, or dying".

Useing Holy Spirit technically is a potency gain but if you use total Eclipse and any of them cause a direct/critical hit there potency suprases Holy Spirit. You also have a higher chance of criting them hitting multiple mobs than just the one. Really useing a 2x flash + circle should be enough of a lead to maintain aggro whiel you spam eclipse. I had very little problams in dungeons doing this. Circle does give enimity and is off GCD. if you need to hit flash every 5 eclipses to top ur hate off but most mobs should be dead before you hit eclipse 10+ times. unless ur DPS are just blah.

When you are pulling trash, spam away.

I've seen some sick returns on this so far, for this reason. Before, you lead with multiple Flashes, screwing over the duration because of resist. Now, you can lead with 1 Flash, spam TE until the Blind wears off, then reapply.

It doesn't have an Enmity multiplier, but it doesn't need one with a Flash lead and Shield Oath, at least for a good few hits.

i use it alot in trash pull, just use it when Circle of Scorn on cd, just remember to hit a flash after 2 or 3 total eclise to keep your aggro

I spam it after getting in 2-3 Flash and you won't lose enmity. That being said it should still increase enmity and Yoshi needs to reconsider it. It was never an issue with other tanks.

I swear, they want to do some kind of AoE mechanic that requires tank swapping in the next raid. That's the only possible explanation for Total Eclipse not having an aggro modifier, Ultimatum existing at all, and Quietus giving DRK a THIRD AoE.

That makes all our skills make sense, but if it turns out to be right it does expose that Yoshi-P is lying through his teeth that they balance the jobs and then balance the encounters in that order.

Seems to depend on class of other players in the party. If enough AoE nukers are around it's possible to pull a stupid number of mobs at once with Shield Oath, use Flash off the Blind cooldown and essentially spam TE while Blind is up. Some damage contribution is certainly better than the zero from Flash, and bringing down 10-15 mobs at once is still faster than doing them 3 at a time if the DPS classes are AoE-specced.

I think, flash got less effect now at lvl 70 than before at lvl 60. When you meet really good DPS, it's hard to keep hate with Flash + TE.

I wonder if they didn't underestimate the hate generated by good DPS. :/

I never got problem of hate before. It's annoying to begin having some now ^^

My experience has been that TE does a fairly decent job of holding threat vs AoE dmg.

I'd still lead with flash for the blind if anything, but you can get away with using TE the majority of the fight.

Sometimes DPSers will single target when they should be AoEing or have their auto-attacks constantly building threat on one mob. Your auto attacks and off GCDs can usually overcome this.

If the dps is actually "good" then they know they'll be needing to use their aggro dumper when needed. No reason not to bring it and use it when needed. So no tank should ever have any hate issues, ESPECIALLY considering that weaving a hate dumper in your rotations is just a simple matter...especially if you want the party to be as efficient as it can be. No reason to stop DPSing just to ensure you've got your aggro in check anymore.
