≪Abolition of the Shield Skill≫
The shield skill has been abolished and reborn as actions and traits learnable by gladiators. As such, all gains associated with the shield skill (levels and EXP) have been rendered invalid.
god that means i have to play my gladiator again just to learn it? and why cant my mage learn it? i carry a shield on them
Hey Thanos,
This was announced in early November as a part of the class reforms:
Actions associated with the shield skill (for example Aegis Boon) are now gladiator actions, and not connected to any "shield" class (like Sentinel was before). So there is no need to "level a shield skill" as they are a part of gladiator actions. Looking at your signature, your gladiator is level 50 so... you'll have already earned each shield action that gladiator has. I hope that clears it up!Quote:
3. Shield Skill
Not being bound to any class in particular, the shield skill has been handled as an irregularity when it came to the obtainment of experience points and actions. In reviewing the identity of each class, it was decided that shield actions should be made a part of the gladiator arsenal. In order to streamline the system and accentuate class uniqueness, the shield skill will be phased out and instead take the form of actions and traits learnable by gladiators.
Please be aware that the above changes will render all gains associated with the shield skill (levels and EXP) invalid.

no thanks on those skills on my mages.
and this has turned into a spam topic?
Just noticed my Shield level is missing from my sig lol.
Mages (the only other classes that use shields) shouldn't need these abilities since they only work when in active mode, and mages should always be in passive mode to regenerate mp anyway. They might come in handy when soloing i guess, but when soloing, you should always be prepared to lvl multiple classes for necessary skills.
Not all "mages" play the same way as you. I found these skills extremely valuable for soloing. Whether you're in active mode or passive mode, that monster you cast a nuke on is going to attack you. You'd be stupid not to be in active mode and blocking with your shield if you have one. It significantly improves survivability in solo situations, and that's what it's there for.
ordinarily I don't have a problem with cross classing skills. But in this case, where we used to have something and it got taken away and now we have to go get it again, I'm extremely bitter. That's really not right.
Yes, and I acknowlegded the fact that they could be useful solo, but good soloing requires cross-class abilities.
I can see how this might make someone upset, but it's for the better of the game. I'd rather not hold back the potential of this game because some people will lose some abilities. And who knows? Maybe the new mage abilities will be so awesome that you won't need the shield abilities anymore.
So far, it doesn't look that way. On THM Sacrifice is gone, all the astral/umbral magic is gone, and no new survivability tools seem to have taken their place. So that makes two different classes to level up just to be able to move from one fight to the next without a lot of downtime.
Both DoM have undergone massive, radical transformations that may even make gear people had yesterday obsolete.
I realize that the main reason for such sweeping changes was to make each class more unique, but people have their reasons for picking certain classes, and the resulting virtually new class might not live up to those reasons, undoing a lot of work even though that wasn't their intention.
Huh? Not true!
I had to use single hand wands instead of staffs which would have been way more effective:eek:
Makes perfect sense, right, because according to SE, mages are not just too dumb to cast while moving, they are obviously even too dumb to equip a shield-
No wait, they can STILL equip a shield, they just don't gain any experience from using it..
That's making as much sense as saying someone doesn't gain any experience from shooting with a bow just because he's dressed like a Knight:rolleyes:
Oh WAIT, SE does that, too..
Me lvling GLA? Not gonna happen.
I used the shield skills, but I used them in dungeons and such, not while lvling.
For normal lvling, a staff would have been more useful.
But I had to use a wand during normal lvling too, so my shield lvl would rise for new shield skills to use in dungeons and the like.
The way I see it, at launch, the Gladiator should have never gotten shield skills to begin with. Rampart I & II, Ambidexterity (or at least what it became), and Self-Preservation. Those *should* have been Sentinel skills. And then Gladiator could have gotten some other nifty abilities in between instead.
(Since they had a shield out, they would have earned all those abilities anyway after the first November patch, heheh).
Granted, as a mage, once passive mode casting was initiated, MP recovery, AND emergency switch-to-level-50-job-to-avoid-wipe options were available, active mode didn't seem so great anymore. Before 1.18, I don't think I used as many shield skills as a caster. 1.18, had some difficulty solo'ing leve and Aegis Boon gave some breathing room in those darn Humblehearth leves. 1.19, don't think I've touched a shield skill on my mage.
Ironically, the only reason why I kept the shield in 1.19, was to build up Sentinel to eventually use it on my Gladiator. Until they adjust the passive mode for mages or until Spirit/Phantom Dart become worthwhile moves again, I don't foresee myself using active mode as a mage outside of screen shots.
continued tangent:
I think a lot of people tho are having to get used to things they used to have.
Gladiators using Cover to protect people will be dry until jobs come out.
Lancers with their Speed Surge's melee haste.
Marauders with their Storm's Path for affordable serious AoE damage.
Although I do admit, Thaumaturge seems to have gotten the largest overhaul of all the classes.
