I am getting the feeling that FFXIV wasn't originally developed to be a Final Fantasy game and that somewhere down they line they figured they would sell more copies if they attached Final Fantasy to it.
It would go a long way to explain the lack of content as they would have had to strip back a lot of it and rework it to tie into a Final Fantasy theme and they probably just ran out of time in the run up to launch. I mean how could they release a Final Fantasy game without Chocobo's at launch they are one of the staples of the Final Fantasy series, yes they are coming but you would have thought they would have them ready for launch.
There is just something not quiet right with FFXIV, not for the amount of time it was in development anyway. At launch you basically had a hand full of story missions, Behest, Guildleves and grinding are pretty much the only things to do. Surely they couldn't have expected that to be enough to keep people occupied for the months to come.
What do you think, do you think it's possible this could be the case?

I remember a LONG time back, at some Vana'diel fest (or whatever it's called), there was an interview/panel where they mentioned something about a next gen mmo. And if I remember correctly, they were still deciding whether or not to give it the FF name, or Valkyrie Profile, or something else. So it is possible. I wish I could remember where that interview was.

I don't think it is the case. The graphics alone would have taken that much time. And though I (sadly) did not get to play FFXI, it seems to be reminisent of the style. I'm sure a XI player could confirm or deny.
I do, however, miss having more FF elements in the game. -

A part of me wants to say that missing MMORPG was Ambrosia Odyssey, but that was ultimately scrapped.
Final Fantasy 11 and 14 do not feel like "Final Fantasy" games short of being in a universe where similar monster designs, job titles, and concepts are used.
But I do think that most Final Fantasy games use the "Final Fantasy" name to sell more copies. Akin to how Gundam Musou is named Dynasty Warriors: Gundam to snag both the Dynasty Warriors fans and Gundam fans, even though it has (at least in my mind) nothing to do with Dynasty Warriors setting wise. -

They did say they werent sure whether to put this in the serise, have it as a sequle to XI, OR have it stand alone. It was at one of the E3's, maybe 07.. read the wiki lol ^^

I saw Ifrit though and he mentions Garuda and Titan.
Also you can actually see Titan and Ifrit in the Intro video where the big dragon summons them (I would asume that it's bahamut but I don't know for sure.
Also in Gridania you can see Sylphs (an old FF summon as a beastmen tribe in this game) and moogles in CS.
This game is Rapture for sure, but maybe rapture was a code name like Konami did with Lords of Shadow and later named it Castlevania.

Iirc the exact wording was Project Rapture wasn't decided where it would take place, but Ivalice was a candidate. Later on it was revealed to be an area/world called Eorzea and later Final Fantasy XIV.
With the game being rushed out they couldn't get it up to snuff like FFXI did (at this same period we were getting closer to our first expansion pack.) -

Dont get me wrong, i love the final fantasy series and their epic stories. Its just that XIV lacks the ability to make me want to continue the story. Its just bland.

that tech demo was shown on the 360 also like a promo to play ffxi. It was in a news reel for 360 when it announced a 360 version comming out. Or it was on comcast. But I do recall not watching E3 really that year cuz I had a better job and worked more. But that tech demo was more for 360. AS if you look the character are all in ffxi outfits. I got no sources other then memory. Becareful what you link on youtube, ppl do misleading titles on purpose.

FFXIV main scenario gets intresting after you meet Ifrit and the last battle on rank 46 Mission is simply amazing, you might wanna look at this in youtube.
