Do people care about Rankings?

I've been playing the game for a couple of years now since the launch of 3.0 and I've seen hit and miss mention of rankings here and there, but I honestly don't know how to make heads or tails of it as I've never really been a part of the hard core raiding scene.

I want to know if people actually take rankings seriously when considering any decision they take and in what ways be it Palace of the Dead solo or party or even FC rankings. I have a friend who recently joined my free company and he said he used to play Aion online and that there he was known for being one of the better players. He told me that sometimes when he'd log in, people would just start flocking to him like a celebrity just rolled into their podunk town. It got me thinking and I've been wondering ever since, just what makes someone popular here in FFXIV? What makes a pc stand above the rest?

Well being the biggest troll/rudest person seems to earn some people fame, whether you call it a good reason to be famous or not though... =/

Nobody cares about rankings here, its all about the post-count.

No one cares about rankings except the people ranking. To become popular, screech the loudest on forums or tumblr.

FF14 is like... the most casual of MMOs on the market right now. There's no real competitive scene that anyone actually cares about. In general, everyone kinda just does their own thing.

Obviously there are going to be people who do care about rankings of various kinds (my partner is obsessed with the amount of mounts, pets, and achievement points he has) but on the broader scale the populace isn't really as into it as many other MMOs.

Thank you for your input. That question was just biting me and wouldn't let go. I suppose all I can hope to be is a pillar of the community then, but that's comforting in a way.

We have rankings?

The only rankings in game have some sense are ones of your FC, to know who is the master, and who the officers, when you need something from them.

Website rankings (GC rankings), I'd look at them just to have an idea how the fc has been active in the week, more out of curiosity than other.

I've played MMOs since 2002, and by far this is the least competitive one I've played.
PvP in most that I've played have legit rankings that give separate guild bonuses. or PvP gear that are comparable if not better than crafted/boss looted ones. sometimes there are iRL tourneys that involve money.
nevertheless, I like how FFXIV cares more about cooperation among players, but there's recognition among those who do rank. not sure how many actually do vie for a position.

Feast rankings are another kind of rank if you PVP. Everyone queues up (or not) based on which ranked players are currently queued.
