New player here wondering about gearing

Hi I just started playing a couple days ago and I completed the hall of the novice and was given a pretty decent set to start off with. I'm approaching level 30 now and im still wearing that set and cant seem to find much stuff better stat wise it. Is there any new gear sets going to be thrown my way or do I just have to piece together the best gear I can get my hands on? Thanks in advance.

You won't really earn gear from quests again until you get to the lvl 45/50 job quests, and the questline from 2.1-2.55 and beyond. For now getting gear from haukke manor (28) and brayflox's longstop (32) are both good options, though they might take a few runs to flush out the set. Another good option would be to seek out a crafter to make you high-quality leveling gear. I would not recommend the grand company gearsets as you should be saving the seals currency for your companion and rank promotions. Note:!It has also been a while and i didn't check the 2.0 questline for accuracy on this response.

You get decent gear from the dungeons if you farm them, or if you just happen to get lucky and all your pieces drop in one run. Other than that, I agree with ErikTheRed as far as searching for a crafter to make you some HQ gear. I personally love helping out new players in my free company and have quite often provided them with a good set of HQ gear for around level 30 or so. The best gear for leveling usually comes from dungeons, so you should roll Need on all caster gear you see when you run those. You can also buy weapons (really good ones!) from your Grand Company with seals, and they also offer some gear pieces. Gear also comes from questing and you can buy it from NPCs or the Market Board. You can use sites like http://xivdb.com to browse all different gear options.

When you reach level 30, remember to unlock White Mage and continue with that instead of Conjurer. :)

Oh! Another good option is if you can get a high level player to do unsync'd dungeon runs with you for gear. It takes a fraction of the time and you should pretty much get all of the gear! Most of the gear you don't need can be traded in for grand company seals. Only thing is you dot get any exp when you unsync.

A note on gear that I see a lot of new players mess up on: Item level trumps everything. The color of the gear is less consequential, just serves as a sign of where it comes from. So, a level 20 crafted set is still better than ilvl 18 dungeon drops for example, despite the latter being green.

That can actually be a good thing if you farm dungeons for leveling gear. It can be a little frustrating to farm for good gear for your level, only to finally get it and realize it's no longer good for your level because you leveled up too far trying to get it.

Entire sets being dropped on you is a fairly rare occurrence in game. The Novice Hall does it, and itll happen maybe 3 more times currently as you level up(all around level 50). Farming out dungeon sets and seeking crafted alternatives are fine if you want your gear to match. With that said, just using a mish-mash of the best stuff you have available typically works fine. If youre worried that your gear is behind then focus on the most important pieces first. Your weapon is far and away the biggest driver of your ability to cause and heal damage, so this is always the first thing to check. The next most important pieces are chest and legs, being worth a bit less then half what the weapon is to your overall improvement. The next tier down would be head gloves and boots(at roughly 3/5 the value of a chest or leg upgrade). Then belt, and lastly jewelry.

And finally, if having a matching set IS the most important thing to you(it is to me) then help is on the way. When you get to level 50 theres a quest you can do to unlock the Glamour functionality. This allows you the change the appearance of any visible piece of gear. So your collection may be from 4 or 5 different sources, but you can set up your glamours so they all look perfect together.

I did the 1-50 questing again not a month ago, and I can confirm something I noticed already on my first play through. The quests give you full sets of gear every level bracket. However people tend to miss this if they skip sidequests. Seeing how these sets tend to always be of the same color too, it's clear the side quests were meant to be a part of playing through, even if many people want to cripple their area stories by skipping over half of the content.

*Whatever+1*- i jsut reached lvl 50 ! yey ARR its done ! ... after doing Class quest of lvl 50 (again thx for those who told me to try sch, i love it ! ) i finally have a Decent lvl 50 set.... but, what about the weapon? the only quest related is the Relic Weapon and as far as i know that is a grind-for weapon, so i was wondering if i should actually do that quest to get that Relic weapon Lvl 50, or if there's something/somewhere i should go/spam/farm to get a decent weapon~

*Whatever+2*- for a lvl 50 player, who just finished ARR, and wants to buy ONE Jump potion, do you think its better to buy the Job to 60, or the HW quest skip, i wanna play SB when it hits, and unfortutaly imma start finals next week, so i wont have enought time to do it by my own D:... so under those circunstances, Job or quest skip?

Now that youre level 50 youll start earning Tomestones of Poetics from a lot of different content. You can use those to buy gear in Mor Dhona, including weapons. The gear you want to keep an eye out for is the Ironworks equipment, which comes at ilvl 120. If you have a lot of poetics tomes, you can further upgrade it to 130(the upgrade items you can buy also drop in the various bahamut raids, though just buying what you need is easier).

And i didnt read it all that closely as im already level 60 with the HW storyline complete, but didnt the HW skip potion include one job at 60 with appropriate gear? Depending on how many hours per day you have to play, leveling to 60 and doing the HW story might be possible in less then 3 weeks, though gearing up at the end would be... a challenge. Not impossible(3-6 hours spent in the right way can get your ilvl high enough to unlock just about anything), just a challenge. With all that said, the HW storyline is a really good one and reading the highlights/lowlights and watching a couple cutscenes from your inn room wouldnt be the same as doing it. Ultimately your call.

Digging around and found this bit of progression guide. Ignoring the grindy Relic bit, quests after Ultima will give an ilvl70 book that's probably a small upgrade for you. After that, you can either try all those trials/Bahamut which seem to rely on getting lucky enough for a drop, or you can just skip straight to the ilvl120 Ironworks gear with Tomestones of Poetics. Not too hard to pile those up.

In my limited experience, I would think the story potion would be the better choice. Just a matter of which might take longer, grinding to 60, or trying to burn through the entire HW MSQ.

I wouldn't go for the relic weapon unless you want it for glamour purposes. Either get an Ironworks weapon, or purchase an ilvl 115 crafted weapon (they came out with HW) off the MB. Going forward from 50-60, you should be able to get up a single job perfectly well solely through quests.

As for the jump potion, if you do the HW MSQ (so, as in you don't buy the HW skip), that will take you from 50 to 60 anyway. So, it boils down to if you want to jump past HW or not. If you at all care about the game's story, I'd recommend not to jump as the HW storyline is pretty good. Also, if you're mainly worried about being able to grab the new jobs, you won't need to finish HW to get those.

i dont remember how many gils you can earn , but try doing challenge log and gather gils or do leves , and then buy from the higher lvl areas , its easier then do dungeon and waiting to drop item, which can be useless soon :)

like others said, grind poetics from main scenario roulette and 50lvl roulette, maybe trial roulette , it costs 900 poetics that ilvl120 weapon and its fully good to enter hw content

The first steps of the relic weapon (up ilvl90/Zenith) isn't too bad, so you can do that if you want to, or do it for glamour - but not really worth the problem if you just want a weapon.
Otherwise just get some weapon from a vendor or the market that is half-decent (ilvl 45+) and keep playing and follow the MSQ. The remaining level 50 quests will give you weapons and other gear until at the end of them you will have a full set of ilvl110 gear.
Allied seals (from hunt marks) can also be used to purchase ilvl100 (upgradable to 110) gear, and Poetics tomestones can buy 120/130 gear - but neither is needed.

In re: Story jump

The Tales of Adventure that let you skip the story do not affect your level. If you skip the story, you still have to grind out the levels yourself.
There's a separate set of job-specific tales that boost a single job to Lv60, which leaves you responsible for clearing the story.

It's $15 to skip from 2.0 through 2.55. It's $25 to skip from 2.0 through 3.57.
Then it's another $25 to level from 1 to 60 on a single job. Limit 1 job level jump per account, limit will possibly bet lifted at 4.1.

So if you want to skip the HW story and jump to Lv60 so you can enter Stormblood right away, it's another $50 on top of ARR, HW+SB, and subscription.
