[Dev Request] How about Ascian/Garlean Armor?

Update: During the Live Letter, they said glamours would only be added to the mogstation if people would show enough support to buy said items. Also it's still a factor it could be added in game as a quest reward. Please spread the word and like the thread for more Garlean and Ascian themed/inspired armors for players to wear!

So, it's been circulating that the Heavensward Knights armor for both the casters and the melee have been added as has all their weapons. They aren't available yet in the game, but they are listed there in the files.

Seeing as how the Heavensward and Thordan were the main enemies to the end of the 3.0 patch; why is it that we haven't received Ascian garb yet? Or Garlean enemy armor for that matter? 2.0's main villains were the Ascians and the Garleans teaming up. The Ascian's continued to play a major role throughout the 2.x patch series and continued to do so into 3.4. While we have seen no Ascians; that I remember, in 3.5, I'm sure they are still there to pull strings.


A request I have is to make Ascian and Garlean attire for those of us on the RP oriented servers and those who are fans of their respected villains.

I understand that the potential of having the current overlords/emissary masks of the Ascians may be a bit too much; but we've seen in cutscenes that they aren't always wearing these masks nor choose to have their hoods up. You could introduce a hoodless/maskless robe along with the gauntlets, boots and pants and then make a head slot option to include the hood and /or mask as a /visor option.

The Ascian models themselves look to be just normal midlanders so far with what we've seen of Igeyorhm, Pashtarot, and Nabriales all having hairstyles/facial options available to players. So is it safe to assume that these costumes are also currently made available for players to wear if they were to be introduced as a glamour?

I only request this, as being on Balmung, we have players willingly taking up the roles of NPC's which is one of the many aspects of our community that makes it so lively and fun to be a part of. I'm sure the many people who play the Heavensward are excited to soon be able to dress the part, You've even obliged to give the more hero type NPC's armor to players, but what about our Garleans and Ascian NPC roleplayers? Can they receive some much needed love with their armors being introduced as wearable by players?

As a side note; the armor doesn't have to be an exact replica of armors worn by both Ascians and Garleans but something remotely similar or themed would be just as acceptable.

Maybe wait until the items are actually released to complain about them?

There's a ton of more mundane npc-exclusive outfits we need before we need every wannabe Garlean walking around in recolored Legatus armor. Even before that, some garb used by the soldiers should come first (another undercover operation in the questline would be a good way to give us such a thing in 4.0). Sometimes things that are exclusive can stand to stay exclusive. Garlemald isn't "been there done that" like The Heaven's Ward are, nor are the Ascians. Wait until they've been vanquished to beg to dress like them.

Neither were the scions, yet there is their armor in the cash shop. But there are some NPC's in both the Garlean and Ascian faction who have been vanquished. I'm also not begging, it's a simple request in hopes of being considered?

Totally support this. Heck, I assume the Scions still have one of the Outfits somewhere stored for observations, can't be that one of em was one of the bad Guys in the end, had that Outfit and suddenly dumped it somewhere in the next Bush.

As to the topic at hand:

I dont want gear that breaks the lore. (Before you shout YOKAI WAS A THING, yes it was. I realise it. I dont agree it should have been, but i have come to the conclusion that events and similar simply cant be accounted for.)

Lorewise there is a very good reason you shouldnt get ascian armor. They are the villains. And i dont like people dressing like the big bad guys as if they were mere halloween costumes. Would make the ascians lose what little credibility they have left.

As to Garlean armor? Same reason as above. Also the average garlean legatus would get shot at sight if seen within your average city state.

While you do not wish for gear that breaks lore, it could be said that the scions gear breaks lore given how we are able to purchase and wear Y’shtola and Thancreds 3.X outfits as well as use their new hairstyles on top of being able to wear their 1.0-2.0 outfits as well. I had no intention of using Yokai as a scapegoat to argue my points.
Aside from there being a lore reason why we shouldn’t be able to wear Ascian armor there have been numerous reports that their numbers might border on unlimited due to the fact that the lesser ascians (Such as the Paragons of the 12th) have been seen possessing the bodies of the deceased and the living. We don’t know exactly how many numbers are in their ranks but it’s also not far fetched to believe that there may be some walking amongst the regular NPC’s we see on a day to day basis. They don’t always have to be wearing their robes to be called an Ascian.


Before you use the above as a reason that I should be fine with not having the Ascian garb added as an in game option for players; Balmung is a Roleplay rich server and many roleplayers have opted to take on the roles of NPC’s deceased or otherwise. We even have multiples of some players playing the same NPC and our server is not against the idea of it. True there may be some individuals who could do without a canon lore NPC that’s supposed to be dead up and running around but for those who interact with these people who play NPC’s and for the players playing them themselves, it’s a very fun way to go about playing and it shows how much we truly cared for or liked these NPC’s to want to portray them in our own ways.

Adding the armor used and worn by these NPC’s is just another way to show their dedication to the role and to add a bit of immersion into their time spent playing. I know the NPC rp’ers in my Free Company enjoy the interactions with regular players but they feel that the interactions are not quite touching the tip of the ice berg as they’ve sought means to enhance it by matching our current armor count to try to resemble the canon verse of the NPC they choose to represent.

While your argument is valid that these suggestions do pertain to villains; the same could be said for the Heavensward armor and named weapons of the 12 knights being released soon for the players to obtain and wear. It wasn’t a highly requested item in terms of it being requested here on the forums, but it was requested non-the-less. I am also aware of the Garlean armor argument and while I am in no way suggesting the armor of Gaius to be made available as the armor of those imperials was tailored to their specific status and rank, I do suggest an alternative.

As for your average garlean legatus being sighted within city limits; Balmung does have a wide array of Garlean themed Free companies and people who play Garleans, whether subjugated into the nation or born pure blooded - they walk among the streets of our city states just fine.

Again I thank you for your opinion as they are good for discussing the pro’s and con’s and being able to form decent counter arguments to keep the discussion on track instead of just flat out saying “Nah, we don’t want it because it would break the lore.” It’s always better to say how you feel about it rather than how you think everyone else would feel about it.

That is correct. And given that Odin's story was left open after the conclusion of his trial battle, he may very well become a part of the MSQ someday.

I am fully aware that the scions clothes were purchasable. But, it must be noted that their clothes were not what they were remembered as, they were more than a set of fancy sheets (until HW that is :/)
Their clothes were just some remaining 1.0 models. If you took the pieces one by one, I doubt anyone could recognize them

Sure, there may be ascians walking with us. But they are hidden for a reason. Ascians are hostile creatures. They don’t mean well. Them requiring to stay hidden in order not to get attacked is even more the reason for why whe shouldn’t be able to dress in their clothes.
Now if we got the ascian suit and when we equipped it it would make us attackable by every other player and npc in every zone, and making us unable to do quests, sure. I would be able to live with that as it could be seen as playermade events- “A paragon visiting! Kill it!” or something similar. However knowing SE policy on pvp in the open world, I doubt this will ever happen as cool as it may have been.

Im sure there would be many people on balmung that would use this garb as you intend. But just as many would use it to delegitimize the ascians. ERP with the dark lord of shadows? Sure every Thursday at 8pm.
This is going to be abused. Your ideals are going to be hammered to the ground. People wont keep it at “lets rp im an ascian”.
While an innocent idea at first, many people will not stay that way.

In canon, you are the WoL. And everyone else is adventurers. Sure I recognize there are those who choose to represent a certain npc, but those people are not canon.
If we got the ascian garb ill bite my nonexistent hat if there wouldn’t be a parade of dancing ascians doing the moogle dance.

The armor of the heavensward is not armor native to villains, but rather ishgard itself, a city of which we are on fairly good terms with the lord of the knights. It is an easy addition as all the gears are just reskins of existing armors, so no refitting has to be done.
As to the Garlean armor, wasn’t that your point? That you wanted the shiny red/white/gaius variants available? I thought that was the point. And if that is the case, I must disagree. See ascian reason.
If it was regular soldier armor, I would be fine. Everyone can be a soldier, although they would still be shot if seen near Ul’dah. Im split on this issue as I am aware we have a set of low ranking soldier gear consisting of a hat and shirt. As others have mentioned I’d be fine with some more exquisite gear obtained from another stealth mission.

Balmung created initiatives are not canon. End of story. A garlean would get shot on sight if near Ul’dah, unless it was backed up by a fleet of airships.
Nero had to disguise himself just to enter a free unaffiliated city (mor dhona), just imagine what a garlean would have to do to enter Gridania.

Odin is not a major villain. He is a FATE that spawns every couple of hours with some interesting lore. I doubt we will see him again, some things are better left a mystery. We don’t need answers to everything.

I mean that they disguise themselves in a normal wardrobe to monitor and blend in with modern society. I'm unsure if you did the 50-60 SMN story, but an Ascian had been possessing a dead person and they weren't wearing their traditional garb, simply a black hooded cowl.

In canon lore, yes our character is the warrior of light, but it's also been mentioned by NPC's that we are not the only Warrior of Light in the realm. It even shows this in cutscenes with many random NPC's and your character floating/flying around the crystal of light to give an emphasis that we are not the only one out there.

The line and purpose of the Heavens Ward was absolved when Ishgard came back into the Eorzean Alliance. There will be no one else to take up the mantle and thus the armor will no longer be in use by any of Ishgard.

While true Balmung created initiatives are non canon, most of them do abide by lore and the events that take place in the game. Not everyone on Balmung plays their character as a warrior of light. A number of people play normal characters who do not have the echo or are in no way connected directly to Hydaelyn. WE do have Garleans who roam the streets openly admitting to who they are. These characters are accepted as defectors of their nation due to many reasons. For example the defeat of the Garlean leaderships from 2.X and seeing as how it's either surrender or die. Not all who surrender are to be put to death.

Your other points I did not touch on or make a response to are very valid reasons and such I won't address them, please don't take this as me ignoring them.

In all seriousness we'll likely get it when we head into the empire proper, I'm still bumbed that the garlean set we did get remains incomplete but i see no reason why we won't get the centurion set later in game, maybe even in stormblood if we're lucky.
The last thing I want is to give us some custom adventurer version, i just want the standard centurion set, no altered version pls. It is one of the best looking armor sets and it doesn't have some lame leg skirt like every heavy armor set worth a damn.

I'm sure we will be seeing garlean-like armor in Ala Mhigo.

Never forget, this nation was at the very least more advanced technologically than the rest of the Eorzean alliance!

The same could be said for the Heavens Ward's armor and yet it's being added. We also have one Garlean outfit that we got from 2.X content so your argument can be made invalid. In all fairness if this situation had any sense of realism, pretty much any weapons and armour infantry have on them would be looted by the eorzeans due to the quality and rarity of such equipment.

I wanna look like some damn Judge from Final Fantasy Tactics/XII. And garlearn (boss) gear does look like that. Im so up for this.

We already had Ascian looking armour. Darklight was pretty Ascian.

I don’t think I misunderstood anything. You repeat here that the ascians we saw were “wearing” the corpses to not look like ascians. That’s the whole point. Even the ascians don’t want to look like ascians. If they are obvious ascians they would get attacked. Which is why I am against this in the first place. Players who would wear this would be able to enter cities, looking like ascians, therefore breaking the lore by not getting shunned by everyone. Only the desperate allows ascians near them.

KF: Yeah, the Mothercrystal talks to many people. You’re the Warrior of Light, but she has to have other options. Not everyone is Warrior of Light material and there are lots of other things going on.

As I said, yes the heavens ward is gone. But the guy who now has the power to order the designs of their armor (classical ishgardian knight dyed white and blue mind you. Its just a dye.) is your best friend in the city. Surely the guy who is essentially the leader of the city would be able to order some of the traditional armor for you. If not for show of craftsmanship then to break the traditions that had plagued the city for so many years.

I am fully aware that many people choose to roleplay their character as something other than the warrior of light. And that is fine. But their actions are as a whole, non-canon.
In the canon we have two examples of garlean deserters: Cid and Lucia, both of whom have had to either hide their identity or undergo strong alliances with the leaders. Garlean deserters, if caught by the guards would most likely get taken for interrogation and/or torture. Especially if it was an Ala Mhigan refugee gone guard who caught the rat.

NPC's, in particular the Scions and Grand Company Leaders have made mention of "Warriors of Light" of the past. By adding an S to Warrior it makes it plural meaning they are mentioning more than one. We can conclude that there is not just one Warrior of Light floating around. Even the Warriors of Darkness made mention that they were once the Warriors of Light of their world. That means all five of them. In the interview you quoted he said "Not everyone is warrior of light material." meaning that there are exceptions and that there are more than one but it's not a role than can be applied for and accepted like a job application.

Yes but in canon lore that armor is also a symbol of lies and oppression of the people of Ishgard given who the Knights were and what they represented and protected. They were lead to believe something that wasn't true for thousands of years and offered prayer towards under false pretenses. Why would someone be so willing to hand out something that represented so much wrong in their religion and standards after their true intentions became known?

Not all nations in the Eorzean Alliance are prone to violence against their enemies should they choose to desert their former nation. Gridania I'm sure is one such nation who opposes such tactics unless it was absolutely necessary. Deserters are not initially seen as enemies of a nation they flee to - most of them left their former nation because of the acts they committed either initiated by their own hand, against them or to someone they knew.

In the interview you quoted he said "Not everyone is warrior of light material." meaning that there are exceptions and that there are more than one but it's not a role than can be applied for and accepted like a job application.

I have got nothing to counter this point. Except the direct word of Koji taken literally. Yes he might have said there are other WoL’s, but have also might just have meant that not everyone is on par with you.

Theres the trick, the Heavens ward were deceived themselves. They were tempered into doing bad things, and most of the “bad things” they were accused of was already in full practice by the regular guards, and they did not receive any changes at all after the reform. As per 3.2 the heavens ward weren’t looked down at. Nor were they hated. The highborn ladies were simply waiting for them to get home. All they did (Kill a “unicorn”, help the archbishop and attempt murder inside secured and closet halls.) was done privately. Only we as the WoL and our nearest friends know they were bad people.

I agree that not all cities are violent towards outsiders. But Gridania is possibly the worst example. That city is unbelievably xenophobic, even groaning at your own first arrival. Only the officials seem to allow your presence, since they know you will leave eventually.
The only feasible city were I can see a garlean living, and this is a stretch, is Limsa Lominsa. And this is only due to the lack of government in the lower decks and the vide variety of accepted residents. Even then they would be under pressure as hunting Garleans is the only way for pirates continue their lifestyle and not become farmers. You must remember the garleans are basicly roman space Nazis. The pureblooded are identifiable by their own body. Sure the conscripts might be able to live a normal life, although the one example we have of a conscript gone rogue is a guy forced to live alone in a wooden hut in the wild jungle. In eastern La Noscea might I add.

But I agree our last remarks were driving a bit off topic. :D;; But most of the discussion has been on topic and I feel If we go back to discussing more about the topic that we'd just get repetitive with our statements. I think we covered a pretty expansive pros and cons and I admit I'm unsure how to further discuss the topic without getting repetitive.

He's actually called Zodiark. XD I doubt he will ever truly be defeated as he is a part of Hydaelyn as Hydaelyn is a part of him. They balance each other with both Light and Dark. Zodiark just got a little power hungry.

I dont think we will get an Ascian armour anytime soon, but with the Garleans being the main enemy for Stormblood, I can see a armour as a reward or maybe a tome gear with every class getting a Garlean armour?

Even if not the exact garb for Ascians, something similar that isn't darklight gear.

-More varieties of cowls with masks (Seer's cowl is the only one and it's ugly as all sin).
-More hoodless robes with adornments like the Ascian's traditional garb (Not exactlly but similar)
-Different types of full/half masks that don't look like wood wailer masks but still hide the eyes.

Simple things to appease those who appreciate the Ascian's as the villains they are meant to be.

I'd very much like to see both! :) Ascian garbs would be especially nice to have! Imagine DF with 2-3 of those and they do the ranger poses. :D You know you need this in your life!

Most of us do need this in our lives. Balmung has its fair share of Ascian RP'ers as well as those who support or align themselves to their cause via RP!

I think it would be cool to have the Garlean Armor and Ascian gear. We already have the Scions, so I don't see a problem with not having Garlean or Ascian armor for those wanting to RP as the NPC as they please. Including the Emissaries ( Elidibus) armor too. And masks.

I'd definitely like to see both things! o uo Or at least things that are very similar and don't make me cringe. [The Seer's Cowl is...no. Just no. -shudders-]
