Here we go... again.
I haven't had a single issue with this thus far and I've been in several EXP Chain parties that consisted of 7 JPs and me being the only EN. Maybe it's just bad luck that night.
Lol PL parties is the new thing, haven't you heard? Instead of shouting for parties, everyone is getting PL behind the scenes.
And it's easier to participate with people who speak your own level.
5 years playing FFXI - Never got a JP only
FFXIV since Beta - Never got a JP only
Maybe it was just a bad day, its not the norm
Ya maybe just a bad day. But this is one hell of a dif from the norm then if the norm is never JP only.
Sometimes people don't want to deal with the inconvenience of working through autotranslation/a second language during their leisure time.
lol all your gonna be told is JP only is a figment of your imagination and it doesnt exist.
people will post things like "i never have a problem playing with JP people in this game or in FFXI"
it doesnt matter how solid your proof is, it just doesnt exist according to the masses.
There are a lot of Japanese players, who are absolutely amazing. Language barrier is why a lot of them group together. Also their culture is vastly different than ours, we come off differently to them than we may realize.
I'll give you a bunch of reason too :
afk
brb
afk food
afk bio
forgot a step in my quest brt
I just hit level XX, I go back to Ulda to get my new weapon
afk someone's at the door
etc
etc
etc
The day people will respect their PTs, they will get a bit more respect (perhaps) from other players.
To explain a bit further, when i have only 3hours to play, i hate it when people go afk for a thousand reason... I am not from Japan, but i guess this is a reason why they dont want Western players when they can.
Haven't gotten a single JP ONRY in XIV since I started on open beta, BUT I see a lot of exp/raid shouts in japanese that don't use autotranslate at all which is pretty much an implicit JP ONRY...
I am pro-regional-servers as long as people from other regions can still pick them if for some reason they want to.
Higher player density that speaks your language AND less latency. {Yes, please}.
{I can understand a little. Japanese} ok now too http://translate.google.com/ PT誘ってください.
Now when i'm in the party i try and translate the most i can if they say something funny i'll w. Anyways work for me :) most Japanese are going to let you join if you try and speak and try to talk to them in Japanese.
I think the fact that Yoshi P is implementing regional servers is a good sign that its pretty solidly wanted on the JP side and many on the western wouldnt mind having.
All I got to say is that we didn't play the same XI, also :

Aaaah, this topic again.
I rarely see JP only parties, and only once I was really not allowed to join when I was using Auto-translate and reading what they said in google translate (I'm not using that to translate from English to Japanese though, because I know just how horrible it must be for the Japanese players to read that).
This only applies for grind parties though, because I totally understand why nobody would want to do Ifrit with somebody who wouldn't understand a word:rolleyes:
And about the "japanese don't like when you go afk all the time or say brb for all kinds of stuff"-answer:
That's totally not true.
I've played with some extremely nice Japanese players who were all okay with me being stupid and getting arrows from Ul'dah instead of the next camp, or with me DC'ing about every 10 minutes.
Actually, I met way more NA or EU parties who kicked me just because I had DC once.
Like "Uh, it's too much of an effort to reinvite you.."
Btw, just so you know, people don't act that way just because they are non-japanese.
Impolite players act that way, and please don't equate "non-japanese" with "impolite" >.>
I have never in FFXIV seen the words JP only or JP onry, but most JP shouts I see are entirely Japanese, I might try to jump in one sometime see what happens, but I do agree that it has alot to do with the language barrier, for example I was in an ifrit fiight with 2 Japanese people, we had somone in the party that had not tanked it before so the Japanese people were telling them tanking positions (how JP do it) now the tank did know japanese, but so we all knew what we were doing they had to communicate in english and it was quite confusing because they didnt speak much english.
Personnaly I respected them for communicating in english when they didnt know much, but I think some of the confusion over communication could have been one reason why we failed and didnt fully understand how we were doing it, language barrier can be a rough thing to get over.
I've seen it often, but i do not mind it, because i respect their choice and I honestly would prefer EN/EU only. It just makes things easier.
take the effort to msg them with auto translate.. i get into JP parties all the time..
i even ask when i see them say JP ONLY
and they let me in cause i show some effort
i remember playing 11 i would play in the morning alot (est) so id play with allot of jpn players. on more then one occasion id be dropped from party with no warning and see my replacement standing in front of me ready to go, lol. those were the good ol days, lol
Threads like this make me want to punch a baby in the face... hard.
It's not discrimination, it's called the language barrier.
The JP Only is not intended to be an insult or discrimination. But on the receiving end due to the phrasing, it's quite easy to interpret it as such.
It's like if someone comes up to you in another language and you respond, "I only speak English". Or something like "Je ne parle pas Francais" (with the little cedilla on the c) or "No hablas Espanol" (with the necessary accents) (I don't know if any of these are correct typed out).
1. Open google translate, English to Japanese.
2. Copy/paste your request to join their party in Japanese to the leader.
3. Don't say anything while in the party other than "thank you" (ありがとう) when it is over.
4. ???
5. Profit.
Example: 私を招待してください
Surprisingly, in XI, my experience was split. In my 4 years, I was mainly on Alexander and the overall relationship with the JP community and NA was rough. I would frequently see search comments "NA {no thanks}". I spent about a year total on Pheonix and it was nowhere near as extreme.
A lot of times, it helped to start a /tell off by saying hello, good evening, or thank you in Japanese. Even if i just typed it in english letters, they appreciated my effort and that's all it usually took mostly.
It's actually pretty known it's not discrimination or anything but people always state it as such so their point can be stronger, anyone who's played XI or even followed it knows a lot of Japanese players explained what they meant by 'JP Only', majority are wanting people in the same time frame or speak the same language. I've seen a great deal of "French/German Only" In my time in FFXI as well, were they discriminating against everyone else? More than likely not, people always take something the most negative way possible.
Then we'll have complaints x time period is a lot less lively versus y time period. Also this sentence was kind of confusing, the language barrier only exists because despite playing a Japanese Game most people don't even attempt to learn at least basic Japanese to communicate, it goes a long way, just like people of other nations are usually forced to learn some English.
The good thing about XI and XIV is that they're international games that actually mix servers, all MMOs with segregated servers only see English servers with most population (surprise) and the rest are fairly low and generally less cared for by Admins. Also, I see a lot of people who don't just speak English playing on 'English Only' servers because it usually has higher population, so in the end it does absolutely nothing.
I LIVE, WORK and play my video games in AMERICA. Here ALL products released are in ENGLISH. We are playing the ENGLISH version of a JP game.
With that being said why the hell should i learn basic JP? to party with people who want nuthin to do with me? If anything in AMERICA if we chose to learn a second language its OBVIOUSLY spanish. thats a stupid thought. Every other MMO has servers based on language. SE is BEHIND on this and that is why they are changing it.
Im FLOORED that you think its confusing for a product sold in America that people want to play with ENGLISH speaking people. Im... i ... i can't even comprehend that logic.
EDit:
People in other nations learn ENGLISH because more people speak it. Schools in America know this and are not required to do so. no one needs to learn JP im sorry.
I'm currently stationed in America for work with English localization and I see, just one business block alone, hirings that require you speak English and Spanish -- America is pretty diverse. Not to mention are you against playing with Europeans because they have German, French, Swedish and so on? It's also another diverse nation.
However this should make more sense to you:
World of Warcraft = American Product.
Final Fantasy XI/XIV = Japanese product with international servers.
People go into these two games knowing it's a game based and from Japan with servers with Japanese people and originally had no plans for segregated servers, if that's such a huge problem why did people even play it to begin with?
You're required in American school system to take Spanish, so you pretty much understand exactly what I mean by other nations having to take English courses.
I haven't seen any JP ONRY shouts but there are advertisements from JP players in only JP characters so they're definitely catering it to people that can only understand that language, which is fine. Most of us understand that they would prefer to play with people that can understand the language so it's easier to communicate things.
Now FF11 was another story...Lots of search comments said {English}{No Thanks} or JP ONLY. Who knows if this is going to crop up again with the new search system if it allows for custom comments.
It's really not that big of a deal, as you see FR/EN/DU onry shouts as well. Some people would rather not deal with the language barrier. Though in my 6 years of XI, and time on XIV, it has almost never been an issue. I have never been kicked from an otherwise full JP pt, although I have left a few myself (in my experience alot of JP grind pt's move at a much slower pace, they usually seem to have a more casual approach to it). Occasionally I may get ignored by someone recruiting for a JP pt, but I take no offense to that since they made it clear in the shout already. Since I love to play in the early mornings to get somethings done before the rest of my LS logs on, JP pt's have been the way to go since back in XI for me. I am completely against regional servers as it kills server population at different times throughout the day. IF SE fully commits to providing some regional servers I know I'd opt to stay on an international server, as they are working just fine for me.
I only see it when they are recruiting for ifrit or other similar instances/bosses.
But EXP parties? Very rare.
