"Why is it still a thing": repairs

Here's a "why is it still a thing" thread.

Today lets talk about repairs. I'm really confused as to why this is still a mechanic in FFXIV? Is it an mmo tradition that you just need to have for some odd reason? I would love to get some explanation from the game design team on this. So if anyone has an interview extract or something please send it my way.

Now don't get me wrong. I like the concept of repairs. But it's so cheap to repair your gear in this game that it kind of defeats the purpose. It's just one of those mild annoyances you do to make sure you don't get caught naked in a dungeon... but that's really all there is to it.

I personally think it should be better balanced. Make general wear less frequent. Penalize us more on deaths, and make it way more expensive to repair our gear.

The other option I guess would be to simply just remove this mechanic. I feel like the game is rich enough that it could fair well without it anyways.

What does everyone think?

I agree. It's more of a nuisance than a mechanic. Always having to carry a stack of repair crystals and then forgetting to restock... why bother us with this?

It's probably an old carryover from the pandemonium warden debacle from ffxi. It's a way to force a break on players during progression.

And possibly a way to add a little extra incentive to crafting.

It's a gilsink, simply as that. Despite the fact that it's cheap, it's still something that everyone in the game has to use to keep their gear from breaking. I don't think removing a simple gilsink like this would be a good idea.

Penalizing players more on deaths also wouldn't be a good thing, if it has the chance to break a player's gear before an instance timer runs out, unless they allow crafters to also repair the gear on other players to mitigate that.

It is in place to destroy and remove currency from the ecnomy. But other then that your right there is no real reason for it to be there.

Ahh, thanks! It's true that I didn't consider the gilsink aspect of it. In that sense removing it would be out of the question. I do however maintain that it should be reworked along the lines of what I posted earlier. I feel it would then make more sense.

Most people atleast would probably be on board with the ability to repair other people's gear. As well I do sometimes finding myself being a bit surprised how much money I spend on repairs at times when I'm not making a good bit of money back through other things.

If there was no repair needed, I would never have leveled my DoH classes.
Being able to self-repair anywhere has been the main motivation for me to level DoH :p

LOL you guy's think it's bad now I want it back to how it was in 1.0 ~ No crafters no Repair and repairs required items lol kek you don't realise how easy you have it now.

This is just a money sink

Wow that sounds bad!! Though the point of the thread is that it's -too- easy now. Should at least be more expensive.

This, so much! Funny fact tho', despite me maining PLD armorer was the last DoH I lvl'ed...
