Why is 1.0's clothing much more detailed as well?
I'm not a technical genius so bear with me here, from what I understand, they downgraded the engine to allow the game to better run on lower quality machines to increase the amount of potential players. That's my basic understanding of it.
Because 1.0 put more emphasis on the look of the game than the actual game itself.
The scaled-down Luminous Engine (which FFXIV uses) is highly optimized to show multiple player-characters/NPCs on-screen all at once with maximum performance. The only valid excuse to remove it's core function is because of the PS3. Since it'll be dropped in 4.0, it won't be valid anymore, pretty much.
So, I'm hoping they will look at this and possibly add better textures and such, as nothing will be holding its Engine capabilities back anymore at that point, haha.
oh btw can u share your character file please? looks awesome :3
Hopefully they spruce this thing up a bit, sometimes the graphics look downright terrible. Like, distractingly bad.
With any luck one of the next major announcements at the upcoming Fan Fest will be about graphical improvements to character models as well as additional options for character customisation.
I'll be crossing my fingers and I am certain many others will too given that it's a commonly requested feature around these parts. Now that PS3 support is being dropped we no longer have the same limitations at play.
I think the team worked really hard on a number of aspects so sometimes when I compare I feel like 2.0 looks better, and other times 1.0. But 2.0 runs way better on WAY more machines lol.
I think some changes were a bit personal to Yoshida really wanting a lot of characters on screen at the same time (which at least for my computer seems to work quite well, desire turned reality - no lag in pvp for myself at least), but probably why some armors are pixeled in their fine details. Besides PvP I actually turn down character count (am on FULL server), because I like to have a reasonable spread.. so to me the armor could take more of my GPU's memory I'd be okay lol.
1.0 had some really high poly models, like iirc flower pots that gave characters a run for their money lol. But, that also applied to butts. Like 1.0 booty was quite a bit 3d, and 2.0s is quite a bit flat in comparison (or in general too I guess). So there was an issue with consistency and balance, I think a lot of people are okay to give up the flower pots and less so for the rear end.
Also iirc 1.0 used A LOT of shaders, so sometimes 1.0 material felt better represented and intricate. 2.0 is far more efficient and available to the consumer to play, but maybe lost a little finesse.
Would love to see touch ups when possible, I know that's likely negative priority but would be cool. I could run 1.0 max, and been running 2.0 max as well. Would like to see some textures improved too, more reasonable request if they've been downgrading for release- bit less reasonable if what we have is what they got. Like my character has seams on his non-existent nipples, hair but mostly beards are also notoriously low detail.
Figure it can be someone's really slow side project that they work on when Yoshida isn't cracking the whip on a new mount or what have you :P (so, not that often). Iirc they talked about updating the graphics occasionally, like with Dx11 they did. Occasionally, also most likely aka very seldom.
Weird feeling where its like something I really want, but I don't want it so bad that it pushes something more important like a well designed skill set or something lol. I know that sort of logic is a bit silly since I think it's unwise for players to try and be the producer of the game, we don't know their budget or current task schedule.. but still lol
Many of the important graphic changes I had wanted in 1.0 to 2.0 were actually well taken care of, I can't really recall a thing I didn't really see changed I thought should have been. Of course I greatly miss the animations of somethings but maybe it added way too much cost/standard to the pipeline (understand why it was left behind, even if I thought some were pretty smexy). So at this point its just fun to push them to keep FFXIV as the shiniest mmo in the land :D.
"Excuse me sir, can you add more lights to the painting, and move it a little bit to the left, and then the right, and left, and.. add twelve more pixels to the frame!" Thanks~
Pixelation density puts a massive strain on your average CPU. To give an example, 1.0 flowerpots had the same amount of pixels as full blown character models. Most people do not own top of the line PCs, nevermind ones capable of handling high pixel density. Adding those details would bottleneck anyone not using higher grade CPU and GPUs. The PS3 held things back somewhat, but nowhere near to the extent you believe. 1.0 flat out couldn't run on the PS3 and I dare say even the PS4 would struggle due to its poor optimization. Personally, I'm not seeing a significant difference between the two in your pictures. At least not one where I'd want the devs to bother with an expensive upgrade. I would, however, love to have them release 2k or 4k models for those of us capable of running the game at higher resolutions.
I'm simply hoping for improved textures all around (Ground, clothing being the big two).
Give me some skin textures with depth as well, pretty please. The plastic look hurts my heart.
I would like to see more rounded models. Breast are jiggly and more often than not, being shoe horned into our faces. (Because why would anyone want to be anything other than a miquote in a bikini/shawl glamour) The least they could do is ..i dont know...make the freaking round?? lol My wifes character has octagonal breast. If they dont have the resources to make people round why are they wasting resources to make boobs flop when somebody jumps or uses an action? jeeeeez. I am also dissapointed by the curves of the terrain. This game is way too flat and needs to be smoothed out in some locations. Its almost like im playing with ps2 models but ps3 textures sometimes. I hope they at least allow modding of the 3d models in the future. Like graphical enhancement mods. If yoshida doesnt have the funds, screw it, let us help for free. I personally enjoy coding games and making 3d models occasionally. I would love to provide my works for the community too.
This may enlighten as to why there's such a difference (timestamp provided in the link).

The TL;DR of it is that 1.0 had a huge focus on graphics fidelity at a high cost in production and performance, limiting both the the ammount of playable content offered (while the market, mainly WoW, had changed in pro of offering more playable content) and the max ammount of models that could be displayed on screen at once (which isn't ideal for an MMO).
Because people complained about how their PC cannot run 1.0.
I just want my butt back
This was the cause of the low quality of FFXIv. Yes, the game looks good, but they put all efforts on making the gme "beautiful" nad forgot about the mechanics. So yes, looks better ,but wasa aworse game. For ARR, they dedice to use a different engine (a low quality Luminous Studio, instead of the Crystal Tools from FFXIII) in order to get better performance and allow low end machines to run the game.
1.0 when released needed a very powerful machine.
Alot of it is like others have stated they changed the engine to fasilitate there promise to port the game to the ps3 and later the ps4 and since then they have been slowly upgrading the engine to get back up to that lvl of look. Part of the problom with 1.0 alot of pcs couldn't even handle the game it took alot to run it ,it was ahead of its time in that regard however tech is catching back up and there planing for a graphic update in 4.0 and I can only asume more to come after that soo it might get back up to that lvl or better
Well 1.0 did look great but needed a super computer just to run it, otherwise lot of systems struggled just to run it on low settings.
that's why 1.0 flopped, cause most players couldn't play it.
if i had max settings, i had 1 frame PER MINUTE. so i had to play with lowest possible settings.
also because of all that, it would take something like a minute to go through menu to start crafting something.
it would take 5-10seconds to initiate combat (unsheathe weapon and start attacking)
you could run by a mob, and die 1min later, cause it took that long for the game to recognize that the antelope back there, one-shot you by spitting on you.
I sort of hope with the ps3 dropping we wont just get boosted graphics, but more unique graphical effects like better hoods, cloaks, maybe even some more flashy emotes like the Odin one.
Because of ps3, thats why.
fixed it a bit.
Can a PC with the new minimum for Stormblood run 1.0 good at high setting? (because on low setting 1.0 looked worse than 2.0)

This, along with better texture. If we are seriously only getting two jobs and no new race I hope some serious graphic and customization improvements are coming.
My pc in 2010 cost around $750 and ran 1.0 flawlessly. It wasn't that hard to run the game...I can assure you all I did not have some super computer lol my bf and I built it and it ourselves. Just...needed to know what parts to use.
We need a viable anti aliasing before improved textures.
A game with better models than we currently have CAN run easily on your average PC.
PS3 is the only reason why we never had a graphical update, also, even by the time 1.0 came out, PC's where alredy superior than PS3 in hardware, ...And thus, i blame the PS3. And hell, even as it is the game is almost unplayable on ps3 on some dungeons, let alone raids.
Thankfully now we might see a graphics update when they drop ps3.
Btw, 1.0 had horrible optimization, and that was the problem, but still, if downgraded 2.0 runs with 15 fps on ps3, no way a game with better graphics models could ever dream on running on ps3.
We can blame the lack of more customization options on ps3 too, and many, many other things...And that my friend, is why MMO's are better as plataform exclusives, PC by far being the superior for this kind of game.
I believe all the models themselves were reduced in size to something like 35% of the original 1.x sizes
I would love for AT LEAST an optional Hi-Res texture pack for PC (which I thought we were getting with the DX11 client...) and an improvement to the movement physics to get back to how fluid 1.0 looked. Little details like how the characters lean a little bit when turning, and the momentum shift when they stop running can really bring the game to life. Surely they still have the texture files from 1.0 laying around, and I'm sure the new ones were made at a much higher fidelity than what we actually got.

Like others said, we don't need every object in the game to be hi resolution, but at the very least the character models, armors and the GROUND need to be looking much sharper than they do. Hopefully this will come with the system requirement bump in 4.0
Starlight Celebration trees were infamous for actually handing out gifts: New graphics cards after they melted people's cards because of the high poly count.

Yes, return the old models, how they downgraded since... 2010(?) To 2017 is unbelievable.
I also loved the movement physics in 1.0 and the textures. I was playing on a desktop at the time though, so it wouldn't help me now since I'm on a low-end laptop. XD
If you didn't play 1.0 and experienced firsthand how poorly that game ran, even on good computers, you have no idea what you're talking about.
If you think they can just make new textures and models for every outfit released since 1.23 at the drop of a hat, you also have no idea what you're talking about.
