Really surprised me that with so many people off today. That a choice to take the game down all day today happened.
While I know this is only in USA and not the rest of the world. I just wonder if this happens a lot from past patch launches.

It was just by chance. Patch maintenance is always the Monday before reset, and this time it just happened to fall on a US holiday. I wouldn't be surprised if previous patches fell on national holidays of other countries at times.
Well a 24hr maintenance is always a monday and maintenance are tuesday they dont really look at holidays especially not for america/eu etc.
You must be in high school. The rest of the country works through minor holidays. There aren't that many people off.
Not everyone has off on this holiday. This is the first time I've had off for it in a very long time.
The kids around where I live went to school. So I don't think all schools get the day off. I don't think I ever did back when I was in school. College, maybe.
They're also based in Japan, and I believe the Japanese audience is bigger than the US audience (though I may be wrong).
Because USA is not the center of the world despite what a lot of Americans believe. SHOCKING.
I prefer smart ass. :P lol Besides I think salty is more being angry and idc I'm in a happy mood. I pulled seven in exvius woot!Quote:

The game's not going anywhere. It'll still be there for you to play it just as terribly as before many days after today. You'll be fine, kiddos.
-ahem-
USA USA USA
omg Valkyrie I had to refrain from laughing out loud at my desk right now. Thanks lol
The game get updated on their server, and prior to that, they sent the patch to sony for review so that PS4 can download it tuesday (which is when they get patch and content update).
Well this thread took an awkward turn.

This has nothing to do with what day it is in any country aside from 2 key factors: 1) Is the day before a major patch that had a lot of functional upgrades and patches always fall on Tuesdays. 2) Tomorrow is 6 weeks from the last patch so it it's completely in line with the standard patch cycle.
The fact that today is a holiday on the US is just a fluke.
Now that the point has been stated, time for everyone to post their "ohohoho silly americans" and everyone to completely disregard any clarifications that have been made.
I think people miss the main reason maintenance always take place on the same day. Rather than make this a fight against nations take a step back and look at the logic of keeping a consistent schedule. a Consistent maintenance date is important because of the manpower needed to make the patch go live. People most likely pushing extra hours that day on top of making sure the Server Maintenance workers over and the EU and NA data centers are active during that time to make sure everything works out. It's easier to generate a contract or rather to get someone to sign a contract to host your servers if you give them special guidelines and with FFXIV one of those guidelines is most likely huge updates will always take place on a Monday into Tuesday.
It's an important guideline because it lets people know when they need to be on call, if Maint could be whenever they felt like it was ready then it would add unnecessary stress to those working because they would always need to be ready for the day to prepare for the patch, oh this time it's a Thursday, now it's on a Sunday, man I really wanted to go to that event and now I can't. At least when the date is always Tuesday, the team knows that that date around the time of a patch will be lost to them but at least they don't have to worry about the update being set at a random time.
Then it comes down to this. When the date is set to a specific time this means it can't go before or after that unless it's on the same day. Last week the patch wasn't ready, this week the patch is ready, if they didn't do the patch today because of MLK day that doesn't mean they would do the patch tomorrow, that means they would do the patch next week because it's the consistency they aim for to keep their employees happy.
There's probably a holiday somewhere around world each week. We'd never have content if we had to watch out for all of them hahaha
Pretty much... Patch dates are always Tuesdays for the same reason all new game release dates are Tuesdays. This maintenance is 6 weeks from the last one so it's consistent in that, and it's much earlier in the day on Monday due to the scope of the patch being introduced.
There's 365 days in a year, you literally cannot plan something without it landing on a significant date for somebody.
USA is only country confirmed OP.
I work in a post office and I'm at work today, wrap your head around that one
the u.s. government has been slowly defunding the post office for years so i am actually having a hard time wrapping my head around it.
Sometimes the world doesn't revolve around the USA.
Public holidays are often on a Monday!

But ya it's just chance. I mean, chances are however if there is some kind of government sponsored holiday, in a part of the world that has the weekend off, then usually monday is first pick for a holiday. As far as the government and businesses go, I would suggest they are not going to pick friday as that is usually payday for most people and if Human Resources(HR) is off then people aren't getting their money. So where if a three day weekend is a goal, monday is the only solution for a holiday. I know there are plenty of holidays that fall on other days of the week and you can't control when a holiday falls though. Well unless you do control it like this current one.
In the case of the current American Holiday, Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, it is actually January 15th! So it's observed on the third monday of January each year so it will create a three day weekend: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin...r_King_Jr._Day
I wondered the same thing, so looked up world holiday's calendar information.
MLK day does not seem to hit the radar from a recognition point of view very much outside of the U.S.
Of course there are many players that are likely in high school, college, some federal and most of these have the day off, so it is understandable that they wish the game was up during that time.
