NPC romance

I wasn't sure exactly where to ask for this, but the marriage thread had me thinking. What if players could marry NPCs?

In the event that said NPC dies for story reasons, like for real perma ded, then cutscenes that follow would set them to a widow status. However- it would come a t a heavy risk. They wouldn't be able to divorce, and they'd be locked out of player marriage for the character. It almost physically pains me to see my character cringe when Aymeric shows his utmost enthusiasm towards me. I want to bury my face in his muscular chest.

If the player is married, then cutscenes would only have a slight deviation in the same way NPCs comment on things you've done in the past. Like unlocking NIN when talking to Yugiri. Small things, but enough to establish you're a couple. Alternatively the way race/gender is treated.

I think the game would crash due to how many would marry Aymeric :P

I know there's at least like, two or three other threads dedicated to this same concept of romancing NPCs. I also know that SE once joked about it on April Fools.

All the same though, there are a couple new systems being implemented in 3.5 and 4.0; such as Zhloe whose reward system is apparently based around her approval towards you, or more options for player choices in cutscenes to help flesh out "Your" Warrior of Light and their relationships. So who knows, maybe someday they'll take these things to their logical conclusion.

And what would you do with being married to a npc? What would you get out of it? Slightly different cinematics and a "widowed" status don't sound remotely engaging.

I suppose you can claim a retainer as your npc spouse, and at least they have an inventory that can help you. But really, this just sounds like a downgraded version of the Eternal Bond. At least you can actually role play or run dungeons with your bonded partner.

But that's not my goal for the game. I don't roleplay, nor do I enjoy the thought of some teenager 1000 miles away panting and imagining things I'm far from interested in when walking down the aisle with my character. (unless they were practically oozing with gil)

I want to marry Aymeric. 2D perfection. Not a player. It doesn't matter if there are no gameplay benefits from it. I'm going to assume you've never played a dating sim or otome Visual Novel. You do it to get the girl/guy of your dreams. Not raid with them. Also, like 99% of everything that's not the MSQ, it's optional. It wouldn't affect you or anyone else in the slightest given that most story NPCs are in some sort of hub that no one else can enter or stick to cutscenes.

Ok sure. Marry Aymeric. What are you going to do if the main story calls for him to sacrifice his life?

My thoughts exactly as I was reading the OP.

I think it would be a neat feature. If nothing else, an option to gain/lose approval of different npcs for rewards/etc. would be neat.

This sort of system seems more common in Japanese-based games. As such, I wouldn't be surprised if something along these lines was added to FF14 (though I doubt it, still). Most likely not marriage, but, possibly a relationship system of sorts. I would doubt that it would bring practical rewards or purposes, however.

Then again, we already have beast tribes. Young, powerful and heroic Warrior of Light seeks fluffy moogle for friendship and pom petting?

Heck, I would roll an alt just to inherit the Mirage Trust from Teledji Adeledji.

My first thoughts were Minfillia or Y'shtola... maybe Yda... but as scions they end up in the line of fire too often to be safe choices. I remember doing the GSM quests and really liking Serendipity. So ill go for her. Maybe a little ditzy, but genuine funny and cute is good enough for me.

not everyone wants a waifu, need to rep husbando too.

as much as i would like this (especially if it were like a bioware style set up.) i don't think it would be a good idea. it might restrict the writers from killing off a character for plot reasons.

Pretty sure Krille is flirting with me in all the cutscenes we share, might just be for male lala though.

I would like to have this option but with NPC's similar to the Adventuring Fellows we had in FF11. Each personality type would have their own story line. we would be able to level them up by taking them out to fight with us. and if a player wanted to romance them they would have that option appear depending on how the player interacts with the companion. i think this is an an area that has so much potential. there are a lot of players that don't want to marry another player in game for many reason. but this gives the rest of us that option.

Ironically enough, the original version of FFXIV (1.0) had something vaguely similar to both FFXI's Adventuring Fellows and what the OP would like with the Path Companions, who were a npc fighter that Minfilia assigned to the player when they joined the Path of the Twelve (the predecessor organization to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn). I'm not sure about other race and gender combinations but the miqo'te female Path Companion most definitely was in love with the player's character based on her constant flirting and innuendos (the Path Companion had dialogue in certain story cutscenes) - alas the player couldn't reciprocate those feelings, mostly the player's character just smiled back at them and said nothing.

Sadly the Path Companions were abandoned when Yoshi took over development of the game and were completely replaced in ARR with the chocobo companion, and as the new Grand Company squadrons are going to be able to be called upon in battle by the player in Stormblood, I think SE have all but scrapped any possibility of the Path Companions returning. :(

yeah i remember those. coming from 11 that was a disappointment for me :(

I would love this idea. I know I would be romancing Y'shtola. Maybe add in some special dialog opens for some aspect. I know I was so sad when the dark knight level 60 quest asked who I would fight for. There was no option for my love. So I had to settle on friends. :( Specially in stormblood when Y'shtola is wounded. I wished their was a dark knight option for revenge and hated. Real miss opportunity for a little flavor text based on your class or at less your archetype. (tank healer dps)

This is just some nice flavor text nothing more. Though if I am limited to a romancing Y'stola on April fools for a this was just a dream event. I would still take it.

I'd rush straight to Gridania for Mother Miounne.

As much as I'd like some romance options in game, I don't think it'd work with major story characters. Far too many little details and limitations. Just think about it: they'd need to add some alternative scenes for every single character and would be much more limited if they ever wanted to develop some romantic relationship between NPCs.
Tho I'd totally go for Yotsuyu.

On the other hand, the idea of separate pool of romancable characters, like retainers or GC squadron members, sounds much more realistic. I already have my "waifu" retainer - I just wish she could at least sit or move inside house instead of standing in rain all day and night.

I might be jumping to conclusions here, but does that mean WoL x Chocobo ship is canon?

I really wish they would do the Favour system. Sure it was a joke but it would be nice to make it a real thing.

I know. I am not saying they should make this part of the main story quest chain. I was thinking more of side mission. Where you can return to the Rising Stones and take a secondary quest. Which after doing a few of these you might have like a Star War the old Republic type of cut scene wish some dialog but no voice acting. I really do not think some extra no reward side quest would be that hard or costly.

Maybe we can do the party in the A Calm After the Storm story.

Slightly off topic, can free trial get marry? If so, would be easier marrying alt than making different quests.
Just imagine massive divorce trying to get the quest done.

I though you needed to pay real money for the paperwork to get marry. Honestly I do not think trails can marry. Trails can not even join Free Companies and reply to tells.

Trial accounts can't go past 35, you can only marry someone if you are lv50 and being the highest rank in your GC.

I can see them making something like this with squadrons. Not like romantic, but at least something like the system in 11.

I would not mind the squadrons idea. Being able to pick select npc to replace the chocobo companion. Mainly using the Scions as battle companions kinda like in the ARR main story. I really hate the chocobo companion and wish we could ether make our retainer a battle npc or bring out one of the more major lore characters as a battle npc. Final fantasy games have aways had squads in them. We need that for this game.

That perfectly fine. Sure you would not be the only one who would bring Cirina out into the world. Thought I would expect a lot of Y'shtola and Thancred running around the world. I would be using the companion system more then I am. I would be perfectly happy with npc companion. Fact npc companions might be better then npc romance. FFXI already has this, they know how to do it if they want to do it. Certainly it would be used if the game had it but it's not really a high priority at this point. Your squad are other players for most content.

I know I just wish they would bring this out on one of those odd patches that do not have all the big content stuff that the even patches do. It should be easy to copy the code from FF11 and post it in the right spots in FF14. Add in some npc the devs know people want to spend time with.

that's not how programming works. they are are different games with different systems. the AI for FFXI can't make FFXIV NPCs function.

Exactly, FFXI and FFXIV use completely different graphic engines for one, to say nothing of differences in server code and the like. Having said that, we do have a couple of FFXI armour sets in FFXIV already (the 'Wootz' sets for tanks and LNC/DRG) so it is possible to add FFXI armour to the game.

However I suspect it's not as simple a task as it appears to be, and probably isn't even 'copying armour models across', more likely they model the FFXI armour in the new engine completely from scratch (or at least the textures, the aforementioned Wootz tank set is far far more detailed texture wise than the FFXI Koenig's armour it's based on).

But I'm getting away from the thread topic here.

To ether save him from being turned into a raging monster or with the power of alchemy and...magic change him back. I guess that's what Fantasia is for, I already asked my bf to have his roe alt temporally change to a Hellsguard that looks like Grynewaht, as I think he got his war to 60~

Speaking about NPCs: do we know anything about laws in Eorzea? I'm sure there'd be a lot of people interested in Khloe...
