Why so toxic?

As you can see I don't post here often, I just kind of lurk and read interesting threads. Why does it seems people are being more toxic towards each other than before? I thought the community was suppose to be a "friendly" one. I chuckled when my friend made a comparison to the Wow forums, and honestly if I need help I go to Reddit. I do enjoy reading things here, it's just a bit nicer to read thing on Reddit. The toxic people just get down voted. :)

The in-game community is the nice one, and the reputation is well-deserved. The people who post on forums aren't really part of that. Lack of /flexing male Roes to calm everyone down makes everyone snippy, is my guess. :D

I think that the game has so much depth which brings differences of opinions that it may seem hostile but simply imo its passionate players.

If you like reddit so much why don't you just stick to posting there?

Because most people that are actually experts in a particular field have been banned/quit long ago and thus ignorance has been allowed to spread by demagogues and pseudoscience "experts". Passion is one thing, belligerent ignorance is another.

My question was sincere, but it is hard to convey tone purely through text.

I mean, what is the point of continuing to check the forums here if they're personally unfulfilling and you've already found a community that you do enjoy? It's like checking the blog of someone you don't like or eating something that's extremely spicy. You know where it's going as soon as you put the url in, but you keep doing it. Wouldn't it be more gratifying to stick to what you love? It's something I think about a lot.

I never said I don't like the forums, just why are people such dicks to each other? Some players here bring up ideas or solutions and then get bashed by people here.

Countering a statement doesn't necessarily mean it is bashing, it's just simply a counter point, much like this statement. That is debate, but many times, a lot of people don't want to talk, they just want to say something and that be the only correct thing, regardless if it is or not. Then when others join in, all offering different views, it could come across to several as being hostile.

Generally, though, I don't think the XIV forums have quite reached that level. If you'd like to see hostile, I'll gladly direct you to GameFAQs.

I don't like Reddit's down-voting system. Unpopular opinions are not always bad opinions and I prefer to read different opinions. It's a kind of bullying there, people don't like someone's posts? shove it down and make sure they can't be heard. Dictatorship alert.

People are less toxic in this game because people BARELY talk at all. How many times i tried to start a conversation in Idleshire, even said "hello" many times but noone talks back.

its just everyone here trying their best to prove each other wrong on ideas and opinions
its like almost always when you enter an idea or suggestion thread there is this first reply "No. /10char"

Because people constantly post stupid threads.

If people post threads with intelligent commentary about the game, ideas or opinions that warrant discussion. Good on them.

But what we get instead is constant threads like the 'Why is Eorzea a clone of Earth'
'We need a cheap change-to-lalafell fantasia potion'

And 'lalafell hate crimes'

To give you some prime examples.

I can't really stand reddit, only ever go there if I'm linked there or if a google search takes me there, the discussion over there is a bigger circle jerk than it is here and anyone with a negative opinion or something that goes against the reddit hivemind is downvoted and the downvoted hidden posters are usually the ones that are right or have the most interesting things to say. This place can be borderline reddit with its passive aggressiveness but everyone knows you only go to the NA forums for laughs and screencaps to share while in the JP forums/2ch you have actual discussion.

Hell I think the like system thing should be disabled here unless it's actually enabled by the OP if they have a suggestion because you can get people who write out well thought out posts or responses then they get responded to with a stupid meme image that adds nothing to the discussion and gets thumbed up to oblivion.

tl;dr: There's no decent English speaking place to discuss FFXIV which is why I'm mainly at 2ch.

The downvote system means unpopular or dissenting opinions get hidden - this isn't conducive to actual discussion and leads to a "circlejerk" where people post not what they believe, but what would get them the most internet brownie points. Sure, posts here get criticised, but that's a natural consequence of posting something people disagree with. If you actually believe what you post, you should be prepared to explain or defend your statements when they are questioned. The moderation here tends to be pretty trigger happy, so you can rest assured that if someone says some actual mean words to you, those mean words won't stay posted for long. If you want dissenting opinions or legitimate criticism hidden, perhaps reddit is where you should stay.

I think FFXIV occupies a unique niche, in a way, resulting in particularly toxic forums. On the one hand, it's a spiritual successor to FFXI; on the other hand, it's an ultra-accessible title geared toward gamers and non-gamers alike. Much of the animosity I see arises from these two groups having conflicted ideas of what FFXIV should be.

What is and is not a stupid thread is subjective. Just because someone perceives a thread as stupid doesn't mean they have to start cutting into the op over it. Best way to deal what you think is stupid is to ignore it and let it disappear.

This is exactly my thinking too, the. Conflict between people that want this game to be more like XI and the people that want this game to be accessible to everyone. I prefer the middle ground.

Forums tend to bring out the utmost passive aggressive in people. The Like function contributes to that. Gotta have the most snarky "Hah, I sure showed that guy!" response for them sweet likes. Just glad people aren't calling each other by their forum names and posting like they're on facebook. You know those posts that sound like they're built around trying to sound like a quote with trash like "too all my haters" and "stay strong, I believe we can blah blah blah"

XIV forums can be quite bad at times (to which I screencap and laugh at people with friends) but in comparison to a lot of other mmo's I've played, it's pretty tame.

It's kind of funny how this ended up as a perfect example of people assuming someone is being toxic and just for asking a question.

34 people liked the response calling Texa's question toxic, yet all Texa did was ask a question. There was no name-calling or derogatory words at all against the OP; just a question.

How is this toxic?

People do the same stuff for hours/days/weeks/months and getting nothing -> they get angry!

I already quit this RNG crap over a year ago! I ignore everything that involves RNG! >_>

The game makes way more fun that way!

I find it sad too that sometimes people have interesting suggestions and instead of just ignoring it if they have no interest in the topic people feel the need to post "funny" one-liners or GIFs, often resulting in hate or off topic discussions. I go through the first pages of this forums daily and I will only click on those threads that interest me at least a little. I dont mean people that have different opinions. I mean those that are only going into a thread to make fun of it. On the other side there are enough thread creators that are way to sensible and cant understand that maybe not everyone shares their opinion and feel like they are personally attacked by the others.

@Miste: Well I can only speak for my reasons but Texas post did feel a little toxic. Why is it necessary to ask this question? Its like you are in a topic that talks about the bad things of the game and someone comes in and write "if you dislike X why do you still play it?". The OP said that she still enjoys reading here (only likes reddit a little better) and only wonders why its getting more toxic now. Nothing in her post suggest that she hates this forum and absolutely love the other one, just that she noticed a change and wanted an answer. Also since nobody can see the other person one can only imagine how they mean it and its seems that there were quite some people that read it in the negative way. Does a big number of likes make a post true? No, but maybe it can be a hint that the way the sentence was worded was not that good. (And a post can still be mean/aggressive/toxic without name calling. Its sometimes just the way you wrote it.)

My mother tongue is German and not English, so I always just sit there, read everything over a lot of times and really hope that it wont come off as really aggressive or mean in any way. And sometimes when going through the different kind of threads I think to myself that some should really look at their post and ask their self if this is truly still nice or if this could not come over as a personal attack. I know that its not easy, since people can feel attacked by every little thing, but reading some of the posts in this forum really makes me question if some might have forgotten that there is a real other person on the other side of the post. One can be against something or have another opinion but there is no need to attack the other for this and I agree with the OP that it feels like this happens way more.

Reddit is a terrible forum for exactly the reason why you think it is good. The popular or more likable posts float to the top while "toxic" or unpopular posts sink. Ideas are never properly challenged because readers can just ignore the stuff they do not like. "Toxicity" makes people and ideas stronger because people and ideas have to survive attacks. If a simple bit of toxicity can destroy a thread, then the conversation, people involved, or the idea were not strong enough.

So why not seek discussion on 4chan? No upvotes, people usually keep anonymous unless it's someone who chooses to use a name, and with the lack of forum tier moderation, you will see everything people have to say. I don't advocate it as a good place but for all that what you claim is better, it's there.
