Probably partly business, partly pleasure. Not neccesarily WoW. Blizzcon covers a lot of Blizzard's games. He has said before he was a fan of Diablo. Its pretty common for game developers to check out and play other developer's games. After all game developers generally are game developers because they love games and looking at other peoples work can always be good a giving inspiration and broadening perspectives.
Yoshida is still a gamer, believe it or not SE employees don't only play and follow SE games, he played many games before he became the producer and director of FFXIV and that didn't change just because he got a new job.
I also know of several people in charge of WoW development and community who play FFXIV.
Likely to meet with friends. *cough*cough* To secretly plan the future of MMOs and dominate the virtual world *cough*cough*
Joking aside, I believe Yoshi did say that FFXIV is designed to be following the WoW MMO generation, so theres a good amount of respect there.
Joking again, Yoshi also said that the next generation of MMOs are going to be something else entirely and he would love to experiment with new models. (But money and profits are always a concern) SE won't be letting go of Yoshi though!:o
Yoshida is just a huge fan of Blizzard in general. It's very well-documented at this point.
Having the devs of different games share their ideas and creativity is great for us gamers. Our games get improved, and devs have greater creativity when seeing what others are doing.
Its nice to see the devs arnt as divided as some fans can be.
Isnt Square Enix the publisher for Blizzard in Japan? I know that they are going to be the publisher for Overwatch in Japan.
Note Yoshida was there as a fan, not a special guest or anything.
To take more idea's from WoW.
...Is that what you wanted to hear? lol
It is no secret that yoshi-p loves mmorpgs. He obviously is there as a fan.
He once said his favorite game developer is Blizzard. One time in one of his Letter from the Producer posts (What happened to these?) he was gushing because he got his copy of Diablo 3 signed by the devs or something.
He might just go every year or something. This year there was the Diablo Anniversary party and he is a big fan of Diablo.
Pretty sure Blizz devs play FFXIV, too.
Yeah he's a wow player.
I think he's there to buy a new shirt to wear at the next fanfest
Wow, a gamer and game developer/producer at a gaming industry event? What is this?
Did you even think about this before asking the question? What do you think SE and Blizz are warring tribes who kill each other on sight or something?
Yoshi P + FFXIV Cosplayers at a Blizzcon event. Epic!

They obviously got him as a guest speaker on Sombra's official release. "Please look forward to it."
Because he plays Hanzo in overwatch.
He doesn't need a reason to do things...maybe he does enjoy Blizzard. Who cares lol let the man do what he wants to do.
I would just say he went because he wanted to go... nothing wrong with that is there?
Discussing a WoW + FFXIV crossover event XD
Maybe he's just a huge Overwatch, Starcraft, Diablo fan?
It's not exactly abnormal for Game developers to be fans of other game companies, and play those games regularly. In fact, it's one of the best things a developer can do. Exposing yourself to how different games approach the same concepts/mechanics is invaluable. It's similar to how reading tons of books can make you a better writer. Sometimes, you might find ideas to apply to your own game, other times you can learn to avoid mistakes other developers have made. I read an article about the creation of ARR, and one of the first things Yoshi did was have the design team play a variety of MMOs to understand the market better.
Yoshi P also probably...just enjoys playing Blizzard games. Going to Blizz Con as a blizzard fan is a no-brainer. Note, that he didn't have a guest badge, he had a fan-pass instead. Hopefully he had a great time.
square enix is publisher for blizzard and activision in Japan CoD , overwatch , diablo 3 ect
Illidan is literally the champion of Light (not kidding).
Theres even a cutscene that looks like Final Fantasy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoRAaFIPYME
