With the expansion fast approaching, there's a lot of people that have an opinion on what Yoshida should do about gaining entry into the new content. This is how I think would best suit Final Fantasy XIV.
When 2.1 - 2.55 main scenario quests were released, they were filled with quite a bunch of pointless quests. I know many players at the time did not care about these too much since it had been 3 months since they last did any MSQ. However for anyone new to the game from then on, it does become quite a chore to go through them all.
I think the best thing to do is focus on this part of the game before 4.0. The level 1-50 quests are somewhat fine for now since you are using these quests to level. The 1-50 quests might need a look into before 5.0 hits, but for 4.0 the 2.1 - 2.55 MSQ is a much bigger hurdle for new players I think. It does kind of suck that after the amazing climax of Ultima Weapon that you're doing some boring and useless quests. I really hope someone can sit down and look into them so that they become streamlined.
Apart from that, I really don't like the idea of a leveling potion or letting people to skip the story to catch up. The way Final Fantasy XIV is designed, it doesn't matter how new you are, you still get an almost identical experience as someone who first purchased the game a few years back. The only difference is that lower level areas are less populated. But with level sync and roulettes, people who pick up the game in 2020 will have the same experience during Sastasha as people right now.
Also the story in Final Fantasy XIV is continuous. What happens in 2.X is related to what happens in 4.X and so on. Other games have separate stories for different areas, so it doesn't matter if you start in an expansion area or not. But in XIV it all flows from 1 quest to the next. You let people skip the story and levels, you'll have them miss out on hundreds of hours of well designed content which ultimately makes the game smaller for new people.
Also finally I want to say that Heavensward has done an amazing job at fixing a lot of A Realm Reborn issues with regards to MSQ. The actual story has extremely limited useless quests (Just those dreaded moogles) and post 60 quests are just streamlined with good story. There are amazing solo battles like the Grand Melee and 3.4 MSQ story battle that also keep things interesting and fun as you go though them. If new people had to go through this kind of content to get to 3.0, there really wouldn't have been much complaints I think because of how amazing it was done. The search for Ga-Bu in 3.4 was the absolute max amount of useless content in MSQ that should be allowed though.
People will complain about needing to do the Main Story to reach the expansion, but if you give them good content to go through to reach the expansion, they will quickly forget about their complaints. 3.X MSQ is a clear example of good content that people can enjoy to reach an expansion and I hope 2.1 - 2.55 MSQ can be changed to be more like it.

There are a few quests in this game that don't, which they made to judge the interest in this sort of quest, and there doesn't seem to be any. It's nice to romanticize that a quest is more rewarding because you have to "figure it out yourself" but chances are, you didn't figure it out yourself, you went online and found one solution that someone else came up with. My biggest regret in FFXI is that, despite completing every story mission in the game, I barely know what happened because all I was doing was going through the motions. I actually can appreciate FFXIV's story because I'm not just reading off a checklist on my second monitor and using sneak/invisible to bypass literally everything else in the entire game. -

I really don't care if later story won't make sense if I don't know earlier story because IMO, the writing in FF14 is usually insultingly bad. For example, I still don't understand what the Ascians are trying to achieve... and what... I've been exposed to this so-called story for like 100-200 hours?
I don't even think FF14's story deserves to even be called a story, often it is just pointless dialogues made to accompany the endless amounts of fetch quests. Hildebrant and some other arcs are great, I think 3.3 was decent, and the English translators are brilliant but for the most part, I don't care at all for FF14's story. It was written by people who don't understand the fundamentals of storytelling. And the endless fetch quests were made by people who don't understand the fundamentals of good gameplay. Don't make them mandatory because the content sucks. -

a jump potion was already developed for the Asian market, it would take like 1 guy 1 day to adopt it for the rest of the world.
rewriting the main story would take multiple people multiple days. huge waste of time and money for something that shouldn't matter to most current subscribers who are already way past that point. -

They should give people the ability to just buy into the game with just 4.0 and have enough quests to help them level characters starting at lvl 30 like Heavensward. Then if they like to go back and experience the rest of the game they should buy it just like we all did. I know skills etc will have to be figured into it but they can gain their skills from POTD ultimately they will forgo the grind we went through from 1-30 and 30-50 with two classes merging into one etc. We also have months of sub investment other than time. I just paid my new one today for the next three months. So for the "new" player base to just waltz in and get all the benefits of skipping ahead is ridiculous. Just my two cents.

It's really simple all they have to do is make MSQ locked behind the previous stories; however, to enter the zones all you need is the expansion code registered. Inside of having raids and dungeons locked behind MSQ make some side-quest to unlock. That way the MSQ still make sense and the new jobs/dungeons/optional side content isn't locked by story.

I think for HW, they could have put the trainers in HW to start and the level 50+ job quests should have been in HW. The story goes to great lengths to show that the Ascians are trying to revive their Dark God Zodiark, who is the evil to Hydaelyn's good. Where does it explain this? It's inferred in a lot of cutscenes, however it's most obvious in cutscenes after you kill EX Garuda, Titan, and Ifrit where they discuss how they're enjoying the fact that your only option is to keep playing their game because every time they re-summon a Primal it sucks more aether from Hydaelyn, but it becomes a constant drain on her if we just let them roam around. In the end of 2.0 they talk about their plans to revive Zodiark.
I can agree with you as far as the ending of 3.4's story, and I'm especially sad the concept of the Warriors of Darkness was wasted just to introduce multiple worlds to us and deliver the maguffin to the bad guys. That doesn't mean the entire story up till now has been bad, however. -

Altering quest is a lot to work on though, to cut the fat of some quest and clean up the narrative. it would take a lot of work to balance it while also making sure they don't leave out anything important. The best way to actually "fix" the issue is adding in shortcuts based on the completed journal list.
So to skip the quest requirements for 2.1-2.55 content you would need to complete "The Ultimate Weapon" They would then add an NPC you talk to that would confirm if you wish to skip the quest and be able to unlock "Coming to Ishgard", that while one would be able to go back to it later this bypass would just allow the user to start the content from here.
A Second potential bypass can also occur with that quest unlocked, "Coming to Ishgard" you could bypass it but with an added bonus that I feel would make sense given that 4.0 zones will most likely start at lv 60, allow the player to skip through 3.0-3.3 starting from "Promises Kept" and giving said players all aether winds and one job of their choice that is 50+ to lv 60. However this means they would still need to get the aerethytes in the area but the zones woudl be as if they had already completed 3.0.
But see that's why it's tricky, I do believe the best way to do it is to allow new players to start with the newest content as soon as possible and leave the door open to let them go through the old content once they've had their fill. -

I don't know what they might want to do about the 2.1 - 2.55 MSQ, as it is long and getting dated. At least they removed that little bit that required guildhests a while back. 3.0-3.X seems like there's a lot less bloat, but that doesn't make it much shorter I don't think. Many of the people saying that 2.1 - 2.55 MSQ including a bunch of useless, tedious filler quests is the problem are only half right. That's sure to turn off people that are interested in the story and on board with going through all of it. There's also a large number of people that don't care about the story, or at least not enough to want to keep going through more and more MSQ to get to the new content.
Unless they want to go back and change entrance into Ishgard, I think we just have to deal with how that plays out. For 4.0, however, I would urge them to do things differently. Treat it like most MMOs do with regards to getting to a new area. It's there and you can access it if you have the expansion pack. Sure the content might not be worthwhile to a low level character, but you can get there and once you get to the right level you can unlock some things and take on regular quests, leves, etc.
Feel free to require the previous story completion to access the new story though, just don't lock EVRYTHING behind it. Allow players with the Stormblood to take a break from ARR/HW story, tackle some new content, and then return to the old story. Really at least allowing people to pick up one of the fancy new jobs, ideally without even ARR completion, will seriously alleviate a lot of issues. Then, at least people who have to continue through the story but on a job that everyone else just got access to as well can feel like they're not way behind because they're leveling one of the new jobs right alongside veteran players.
EDIT: It can be a tricky balance whichever way they go. I play a bit of GW2 and it was very strange that the story is continuous like it is here, but they treat the expansion as though it is not and lock several utility skills behind the first EP quest/ mission. Having not finished everything before the expansion, but wanting to unlock the ability to earn skills/ masteries (through exp that's otherwise wasted) I had to do that first mission and then go back and do the previous 25 or so missions. It wasn't terrible, but it was very strange to see the 'triumphant and surprising return' of some character that had not yet gone missing as far as I was concerned. -

I agree that a decent amount of pruning would make the 2.1-2.55 slog significantly better. There are key points during those quests where it feels like needless filler, compared to providing characterization or character development. For example, hanging out with the Scions and dealing with their Sylph imposters was fun. As was delving into the coffers of the Crystal Braves, or dealing with Ul'Dah politics. Delivering earrings for F'lhaminn or gathering herbs for Minfilia's tea...less so. ARRs story wasn't really much better, including the infamous Company of Heroes. When you literally parody NPCs wasting your time with meaningless side quests (Trachtotum was actually pretty funny in that regard), it's not great to have a larger group of NPCs unironically waste your time immediately afterwards. Imagine if it was instead just "Hey, before we can help you, we need Brayflox's help. Go save her village!" That would have been much more satisfying...but I digress.
I feel like Heavensward generally achieved a much better balance, with the more "filler" side quests typically establishing characters well (for example introducing us to the dutiful Artoiriel and the lax Emmanellain), or fit the story better (establishing a camp with Ysale, Alphinaux, and Estinien). In general, even the side quests did a better job establishing the world, with many chaining together to form little sub-plots, such as a Mi'Quote's search for a chocobo hunting partner, or the tragic tale of a little thief girl in the Brume. Even then though, all of those were side quests, and the Main Quest generally did a much better job of organically sending you across the new zones. To be frank, while I was often irritated with 2.0s plot (especially Minfilia's insistence to come back to talk about something in a short cut-scene only to send me half-way across the world immediately after), 3.0s plot was significantly more satisfying, both in terms of pacing and content.
That said, I feel like regardless of the existence of a "story-skip potion" or whatever, some pruning would be extremely helpful. At the very least, I'd suggest they keep the new Jobs accessible without completing the story. I'd personally be completely fine with the MSQ for the next expansion requiring the MSQ completion for the new story, but I feel like players should have an opportunity to try out the new jobs if they'd like to. -

It may have been tedious and annoying, but it had a purpose. People that don't actually read the text wouldn't actually see why it was significant though and just be annoyed. It is rather poor execution, but it does have meaning in the greater scheme of things. I do think that some streamlining would be nice though... like really... it was just meant to extend playable content on the story quests, but running around to get F'llahminn's earring fixed and make her perfume to go see Minfilia... but it does establish that the former dancer is still quite vain, so where do you draw the line?

2.0 and 3.0 content are absolutely mandatory as intended, due to the leveling and the learning curve. 2.x and 3.x are optional. Options are 1) see an abdriged story summary and have everything added to your DF but get no loot, tomes, experience or rewards or 2) Experience everything as intended and get the original rewards associated. Basically it's a trade off, longer time to GET to new areas, shorter time for leveling and gearing. Incentivize the story as intended, but don't force it. -

FFXIV is marketed as a story-based game. Comes with the franchise. This is hardly disputed.
Therefore, most development time is put into the MSQ and the instances that accompany it.
What exactly is making it a side-story optional going to accomplish? Essentially there is now less game to play. Less people have instances unlocked to play with, queues get long, things die, people leave. How is that helping the community? How does that keep subscriptions? How does that keep content alive, when the devs spent time and resources on it?
It doesn't, it leads to a very unhealthy game. The economic repercussions are pretty serious.
Now, if you want to talk about if introducing a leveling potion would be good for the community? You can claim people can learn how to play their job from the tooltips. But is it true in practice? Do you remember people complaining about tanks that leveled up through fategrinding and killing mobs and had no idea what their role was in an instance, and didn't know how to generate hate? What about the DRKs/ASTs right after HW dropped queueing into leveling roulettes with no idea how to play their role? Was that good? Was that fun? Was that healthy? Yeah, the tooltip argument doesn't work in practice, and that's all that matters. -

If you don't have people doing the quests to unlock them, then they die. Queues become stupidly long, it becomes prohibitively hard to find a group. Is that a good gameplay model?Quote:

I'd also like to say that people learning their jobs well enough to not hold the community back in endgame just by looking at tooltips/fategriding is not compelling, as we've seen over and over again how "well" most of these people play in reality, see my examples in other posts. I'm not persuaded. -
