Would Dancer having a similar playstyle to Monk hurt Monk?

This is assuming the character in the trailer is indeed a dancer.
Their fighting style seems awfully similar to Monk's. From what I can see, they're fast paced, blunt damage mixed with possible slashing damage.

I know it's premature to base things like this off a trailer, but it has me worried that we're about to get another Bard/MCH scenario where either Monk outclasses Dancer or Dancer outclases Monk.

Or it could be the dream and we synergize greatly with eachother, but I have a feeling SE wouldn't, it would make taking one automatically mean taking the other.

Working under the assumption that a Dancer would be Melee DPS, spring-boarding off the assumption that the girl in the trailer's a Dancer and an obvious physical combatant, I would like to think that were this the case, SE would be able to create enough unique about them to have them stand out, without being redundant with regards to the other Melee Classes. I think the same thing could be said of the less-controversial speculation of a Samurai Melee DPS. Either way there's the chance of some mechanical conflicts with other classes. But I'm hopeful that whatever SE implements, it'll add something new and interesting without stepping on too many toes.

deal damage and heal at the same time

don't mind which job the red lady is... either if it is a dancer (don't hope so cause yeah to similar to Mnk afaws) or if it's rly Ida at her personal storyline.... all im looking for is her outfit, which probably is bound to her cls... i would love to have this one and her hairstyle as well q.q

edit: about the fighting style itself... well in FFT dancers pre Cls are Geomancer/Lancer... never got it in the first way though... for me its more logical that the cls is related to Bards or Bards pre cls like in Ragnarok Online but thats just me. i never thought that it could be a melee dd cls at all. i'd like to see them more for a supporter role, kind of a Brd/Healer range mixup :o

Would much rather prefer dancer if/when introduced has a completely different playstyle then Monk.
So many players out there love dancer from previous ff games, this would hurt it if similar to Monk. People would be hugely upset

As long as it doesn't have monk's annoying positional requirements, i dont care.

Trailer showing a Monk fighting another Monk, Lore dictating there were 2 warring Monk factions in Ala Mhigo at some point, Stormblood being about Ala Mhigo, job history dictating that fistfighting wasn't their main trait if a trait at all. Moreso Dancers were surprise about their dances that produced spell-like effects and mostly were proficient in daggers and short swords, and of course in some games bare hands.

However if the only thing a Dancer can bring to the table is dances that can enfeeble enemies and dances that can support the party and this is the Monk expansion why not take the easy way out and give Monk flavor skills akin to dances in the expansion?

This seems like quite a reach. And when and where did you see anything in the video where he or she is healing anything? If anything the red and blue aura surrounding both of them seems like a boost or stance dance. Like FoF, FoE, FoW, etc.

It could quite easily be that they are both dancers and the glow effect is like the sambas from FFXI.

Asking that is like asking "does it hurt SMN that SCH also uses a book and a pet and all the same base skills".

IF they are branching off the same class (which is the most plausible right now, considering there are several overlaps between the trailer lady and a PUG/MNK but with distinct differences at the same time),
then it's just natural both share some of their moveset and actions. Regardless of wether dancer turns out to be a melee healer or a melee dps, it will fullfill a different role within the party.

Maybe by stringing moves together correctly, her aura ignites and expands and strengthens her teammates, or as you level up, your moves gain proper debuff effects, and so on.

All I'm saying is that the possibilities are endless and just by sharing a similar core gameplay (punching things with your fists, possibly positionals) does not mean the jobs will play similar at all and they will definitely not fullfill the same role within the party (that of a strong standalone melee dps pretty much without any group-play related abilities).

The thread is about assuming the women in the trailer is a dancer playing exactly like a monk. The old saying is if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck. No need to worry about something that isn't even there.

I don't see why the woman in the trailer couldn't be a monk.. Seemed like a fight between monks in a monk centric region.. T_T

Actually SMN sharing a class with SCH did hurt SMN back in 2.x during Final Coil of Bahamut raid. After they buffed BLM in 2.x, they could not balance SMN because most of its abilities were shared with SCH. This is one of the reasons SE will not make two jobs branch off a single class anymore.

Would it hurt the monk? Nah. Would it hurt the dancer? Yep. I have a monk I play it sometimes and i will play it even more in SB cause story significance and stuff. I doubt I would pay much attention to a monk by a different name. I owuld unlock it cause I unlock everything but I would probably level it up after I'm done with every other discipline. Including crafting and gathering.

Yeah SCH/SCH was a interesting test.. We SCH's are lucky imo.

I agree for different reasons. For it to hurt MNK, it would have to be a DPS role. Assuming it actually does Dances that do something (buffs or enfeebles), its DPS won't be nearly as high as MNK as that would greatly imbalance the two. However, this game has proven time and time again that DPS is king and I don't foresee that changing.

The only way to compensate for this is to make the dances exceedingly powerful, which you can refer to the way that they implemented AST for this. They were afraid that the cards would be too powerful and watered them way down on release. As a result, AST was pretty lackluster and constantly getting fixed for over a year. Even still, the damage was done and while I've seen a noticeable uptick in ASTs lately, it's pretty late in the expansion cycle to have a ton of people willing to shift and learn an entirely new main job, giving up the one that they've become accustomed to.

It's not too far-fetched to assume the same would happen to DNC, especially if they are released during an expansion that specifically focuses on MNK as the poster boy. I doubt SE is going to make an expansion revolving around MNK and then make MNK subpar to DNC. This all, of course, is assuming that they are solely a job and not a secondary PUG job crystal which would just open up a whole different can of worms.

If they do something as lazy as branching Dancer from Pugilist, I will be deeply disappointed.
About your question, that is up to whose gameplay shines the most. If Dancer is worse, it will live in the shadows of Monk, if Monk is worse, it will live in the shadows of Dancer.

When I first saw the vid, dancer was the first thing that popped in my mind. She is dancing around after all, and her technique of using the ribbons on her attire as a weapon is entirely different than that of monk (plus the bladed gauntlet in promo artwork). People have been asking about it for a long time. I don't think it's too far-fetched to think dancer could be a melee support job. All the support roles right now are ranged, so it would be an interesting addition and it wouldn't hurt monk at all if that were the case. Just my 2 pennies.

I rather agree, do however really hope they do not change their decisions about no longer branching off.

In ascetics, yes, Dancer if that was dancer, seems too similar to Monk.

HOWEVER, I highly doubt the gameplay will be similar. The name of the game for Monk is greased lightning. I doubt heavily dancer will have that function, if it's even a DPS at all.

I don't think it's a dancer. When I watched the HW vid I didn't think we were getting a job that was like dragoon. By your own admission the girl in the vid was doing all these mnk moves so it must be a dancer? Plus Yoshi said the focus was mnk, hence 2 mnks. Just my opinion.

That being said, if it is dancer then yes, I do think it would be similar to mnk. Much like brd is similar to mch.

Though if Dancer is ever added, I am at least very excited to see how the animations will be. Monk animations alone are jaw dropping already.

No. Ydda is a monk. If anything, it would be way more interesting to use a combination of dance steps/moves to cast different curses and charm/pacify enemies, and have to use rolls of cloth or raiments and perfumes as our weapons like in FFT. At least it would be way more interesting to play as. I'd like to actually have to dance as a dancer, because it sounds fun! XD

The last thing we need is another class that has annoying positional requirements.

i want to point a few thing that was said in this thread that need to stop:

- "2 faction of monk was fighting in ala miggho"... yes the splendor school and the shadow one, the two that have come from the same school and did branch because of some divergence of opinion. them fighting style are extremely similar since same martial art original.


- "monk particularity is grease lightning"... no it's the stance and free combo system. the grease lightning is more a buff for force us to fight without stop, however it have some very bad downside that i hope is adressed in the expansion.

- "the red lady use monk skill" ... no, she have her own martial art that is quite different from the monk. the monk in ff14 is more a karaté fighter. the lady is more a kung fu fighter and by the way use a weapon the monk don't use (a metal dart attached to her clothes.) she don't use featherfeet (that not the same animation, plus this skill was said to be scraps from the monk), shoulder tackle, the monk guys do a shoulder tackle yes, and if you look her way to charge differe a lot. ( a point why the monk do have a charge? because we have no ranged attack and it's a way to return fast to the combat). outside this, she is a fighter, a martial artist, but you have many many many different fighting style and martial art in the world... that don't make everyone the same. go say to a muay thai fighter that he fight like a judo fighter you will see the result.

- "yoshide have said that the focus of SB will be the monk, hense it's two monk" no he have never said this, he was only talking of the derplander, actually when someone have try to ask about her while the QA, the guys was shoot down by the team. and yoshida was quite elusive about her and what she are.

- "the red lady is a dancer" nothing say it, it's a pure speculation soo far, all we can say it's she is a martial artist more agile using a lot of kick and a strange clothes weapon. that all!

now, if the dancer is added, no it will be different enough, i don't see it as healer for the sole reason that a dance is not a magic art and can't heal a wound. however, she can be a melee class a la bard that will bring buff and debuff to the enemy mostly based on the step used (combo)

ps: a point really important, it's highly possible to see in the futur another martial artist appear in FF14, do it will harm the monk, no since the skill and the focus will be different.
i want to remember that we have 2 sword user (maybe 3 if they add a samurai) do that make them the same class and hurt each other? no the focus an skill are different the fact that the weapon are similar don't make them the same jobs.

instead to close the possibiity of another martial artist in the game, why not try to see how they can do it instead to act like conservator without creativity

although i get your points ill bet she is a kind of monk. like Tancred moved from PLD to NIN other story related characters may be hybrids too... so yeah obviously she is a martial art in anyway at least her cls is based or related to MNKs - and i support the theory if she isn't Yda at all, she definitely is related to her in any other way for sure.

You people suck at speculation. Instead of trying to prove silly points, try actually answering the question the OP presented. You've all heard of WHAT IF scenarios, yes?

To answer the question put forth, I reckon you assume they'd both be DPS. The answer would be no then. MNK is the uncontested king of melee DPS. If anything, it would hurt DRG and NIN since it would try to make up for DPS with utility.

If it was really good, it would affect all of the melee DPS as it's a very competitive field for raid spots. All of them are basically interchangeable with one another. It would probably be better if it DID rival MNK in sheer damage output cause then it would be MNK vs DNC and DRG vs NIN

"The focus of SB is mnk" was literally the first thing he said after the video showed during the keynote. After he said that it was easy to make the guess that it's 2 mnks. I don't remember seeing a metal dart or any weapons actually. I do remember seeing the WoL catching a punch though.

All that talk about what kind of Kung Fu she uses? It's a cinematic, I seem to remember a brd in another cutscene throwing a protection spell down and a pld in another blocking a fireball with Shelton. A cenmatic generates hype. It was a sweet CS and I'm sold. Job well done.
