Garlean legions and previous FFs

I don't know much of Final Fantasy XII, but the story of that game might provide hints of what the main story of 4.0 in Ala Mhigo will be about.

One of my FC mates pointed out to me while we were watching the livestream that the new architecture appears very similar to dalmascan stuff in XII.

Realy though the reference will come down to the plot. Let's be honest here, MOST final fantasies are purely focused on a band of heroes defeating some kind of deity/godlike being that wants to destroy and/or rule the world, I think we can all agree on that. FF12 actually differentiated from that and was more focused on the war and politics between the two nations to end a terrible war and such. If they keep the focus on fighting against the empire and it's powerful soldiers/machines and uniting the resistance and the common people? Then I will fully agree the XIIth and Ala Mihgo is a reference to FFXII.

If the pattern holds true then it seems people wishing for more sympathetic Garleans might get their Larsa. I'd be happy if we get to visit Garlemald like how you visit Archadia and the Imperial City. Meet some citizens and see what they think (or even know) of what's happening in Eorzea.

But, I don't think it'll end too similarly to XII, at least how things went down with Vayne. Didn't they just get a new Emperor? Having him killed off again so soon would be odd. Plus I think Vayne Novus/The Undying is eerily similar to an Ysayle-style summoning and I don't think any Garleans would be fine with that.

XII's story revolved around extraplanar beings who interfere with the destiny of the mortal races, so I'd say we already have a pretty strong thematic connection going. One of the beings decides to upend the whole system, and defies them and works with Vayne Solidor, so if this theory holds true, we could see one of the Ascians (Elidibus, maybe?) who starts to act against the other Ascians in cohoots with Zenos. Given the cosmological revelations from 3.4, it might even see the Ascian storyline resolved.

It also could just be that the XII HD remaster comes out late 2017 (supposedly).

We're going in to liberate a nation that has been occupied by the hostile empire by fighting a guerrilla war... just like XII, sans the shadow "gods" dictating history having to be overthrown, a factor we've been dealing with since the beginning.

The XIIth Legion is only natural. The only question is whether or not yae Galvus is as terribad as the Griffin said, and if so what his reasons are.

Dalmasca of XII was a nation at war with the Archadian Empire. Dalmasca eventually fell due to the machinations of Archadian subterfuge, most notably spying. Judge Gabranth would eventually pose as Basch fon Ronsenberg (his own twin brother, so it was fairly easy to look the part) and murder the most loyal subjects close to the king, culminating in the king's own death. With no king, the Solidor family of Archadia was free to take over and eventually placed Vayne Solidor as the nation's consul. Despite their iron grip on Dalmasca, the nation still did not largely accept their new masters.

Much of this mirrors the plight of Ala Mhigo. Gaius van Baelsar watched as civil unrest between the lower classes and disenfranchised would tear apart the nation. When they were weak, he moved in and claimed the land for Solus zos Galvus. Even now, Ala Mhigo and its escaped refugees struggle to accept Imperial Rule.

I'm already suspicious of the Griffin...what with using body doubles, the letter readings, and the dealing with Ascians thing. He might've said that Zenos was worse than Gaius to fire people up. Or he might be a giant buttface, who knows?

I think it's more interesting that he's a member of the royal bloodline. Wasn't it stated that Varis was killing the other potential heirs to the throne? I guess Zenos might've supported his bid for the throne and was spared?

If I recall rightly, the "yae" title is that of a Garlean royal who is not eligible for the throne. Zenos yae Galvus, then, fits that description.

None can say for sure whether or not he participated in the war of succession, gave up his claim to the throne to be spared, or was never eligible in the first place. We literally know nothing of Zenos yae Galvus except his appearance, name, title, and rank - Legatus of the XIIth Legion, appointed viceroy of Ala Mhigo after van Baelsar's death / desertion, and a member of the royal family ineligible for the throne. (Hell, in-universe we don't even know his name!) According to the (False) Griffin he's much worse as viceroy than van Baelsar was, but... given the Griffin's heavily biased, how true that actually is remains quite suspect.

The "yae" honorific means in line of succession. The "wir" honorific means family members not in the line of succession. And as far as I recall, the succession war was just between Varis and his uncle.

Technically, the real war was between Archadia and Rozzaria. Dalmasca had the unfortunate distinction of being a neutral territory on the land-bridge separating the two, kind of how Ala Mhigo is relative to greater Eorzea.
