Is it bad to only like DPS?

I've tanked and healed with the best of them, and I believe I'm very competent at it (At least I've never gotten complaints), but at the end of the day I would MUCH rather go DPS than tank or heal.

Am I a horrible person? Maybe it's the lack of other roles that are present in most modern MMOs but I just enjoy doing damage more than keeping my mates alive or taking damage for them. I've slowly been liking Machinist as a somewhat DPS support, but even not doing as much damage as other classes I'd still rather be doing that. Maybe I'm scared of responsibility?

I'm a healer main but if i'm running roulettes with one mate for example we'd always both go dps as we can ensure stuff dies fast. Or I would go AST and just feed him cards. I love big numbers as much as the next person but at the end of the day play what YOU enjoy the most. We play to have fun and if that's fun to you then keep doing what you need to do.

You do you...if you only want to dps go ahead. Don't worry about everyone else they'll find other people to fill the tank and healer roles. That said, the only real downside to only running Dps is the que times. Hope you have a good book on hand. :P

I only dps and my girlfriend only plays healers.. Just personal preference. With that being said I'm excited for the next dps job to come out!

Most que times usually don't last more than 10 minutes, which I use to hang out at the Golden Saucer or surf the web. Everything else I usually find or start a PF and we que just fine. I definitely miss the instant ques but they have never really bothered me. I usually only get slack from people who are looking for tanks or heals and I usually stay quite until they see I have a PLD and SCH. :(

What makes this game fun is you can do whatever role you like! If it makes you feel any better, I am THE WORST at DPS. My numbers are terrible, I never move out of AoE, all I do is stare at my tool bar (and still suck).

I always prefer to heal or tank any content. Not sure why I can handle those roles and not DPS. But a good DPS supports the party in its own way, by ending fights quicker and utilizing their own support skills (mantra, litany, vulnerable rebuffs) so I don't think you should feel bad about it at all! Having good DPS makes all the roles have an easier time.

Totally fine. My go to kick back roll is Healer (and no I don't care if I'm not dps'ing, hence KICK BACK), dps if I feel like button mashing and going all postal, and tank if I feel like being a leader (with stress!). As stated above, that's what's nice about the game. You can fill almost any roll that suits your wants at any time. Just have fun!

Enjoy the game in any way you like, there is nothing wrong with favoring dps, I have friends who don't find themselves as dps and prefer tanking or healing. I started as smn and it's my favorite job and will always be, I have had the chance to enjoy every job till I got them all to 60 and till now I find myself going back to my main. The fact that you are concerned about switching jobs makes you among those who give an effort with other jobs especially in classes like tanks and healers and that's what makes a good one.

There is not a problem on like only DPS. What is bad is DEMAND all classe de DPS. A common thing in this forum...

Are you my sister from another mother!? I can't stand being a DPS myself either. That's the great thing about it, everyone can do different things. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. If you love DPS, more power to you.

All roles have negative stereotypes about the people who main them, and even though the stereotypes are often true you're fine so long as you don't live up to them

Me and my mates enjoy variety in our roulette, so we go as whatever we feel is best, sometimes we go without a tank just for a giggle.

Overall, I enjoy doing roulette as a Bard and Scholar the most, but I can do any other job I have geared up just fine.

Nah, nothing wrong with loving only the deeps classes. I myself love tanking or dpsing, but healing is the worst. XD Don't even have time to enjoy myself, just constant stress from being expected to be perfect at all times as well as pushing dps, even in PUGs! It's a shame because I like playing astro and their card system, but the community can be such a pain.

I like playing all 3 but as a tank I can't really speed things up that's the DPS job + the healer if they have time to DPS my favorite DPS for dungeons is probably summoner I love destroying everything and using Bane + Deathflare. My heals go to is either Sch or Ast since I can bring the DPS on either or I can support a DPS on my Ast, Whm is in the works but it has Holy + it's own burst DPS so i'm looking forward to that.

My advice is just play what you feel comfortable/enjoy playing only you know what you wanna play, if you're like me who enjoy being a good DPS and pushing numbers/supporting the group then I understand completely we tanks can only do so much.

I think one of the strong points of the game is that you're free to focus on whichever role you prefer :) If you aim to do harder content such as raids then statics may prefer if you're more flexible, but with such a large community I don't think it'd be a problem to find one that can fit your preferences.

As someone who prefers to play healer or support classes I can empathise with this. It's unfortunate that not everyone is willing to be accepting of other's playstyles, but I think the game design only exasperates people's expectations of healer dps. As a healer I tend to focus on maximizing dps because it's expected of me as opposed to actually enjoying it, but I think this is a problem distinct to healers as well.

It's not bad at all. :) I only like healing - I have no interest in tanking and DPS is hard for me to focus on so I get bored. IU also have chronic health problems that make focusing on the party much easier than running around going after adds, etc. My husband exclusively plays BLM (and is very good at it, gets coms every duty finder run, because it's ALL he does so he practices a lot). There will be those who have issues with it, but those are mainly a small amount of the hardcore community. At the end of the day it's a video game and you should play it the way you enjoy it.

I think most of us feel the same. We'd rather our fellow players stick to the jobs they enjoy.

If that's the most popular job, so be it. They're popular for a reason!

Oh yeah, I prefer DPS *way* more over tanking and healing. I main Bard, and it's what I use to clear the lvl60 content with.

That said, I'm not unwilling to try new things. Lately I've been playing White Mage often (recently got it to 60 as well) and find it really easy compared to the Scholar I was using. I also have a Dark Knight leveled, but I started to dislike it when I got back to the game because it feels clunky to me (I dunno how I even managed to clear Heavensward with that job).

I'll be leveling a Warrior next, to see if that's something I like. Personally, I like to keep all my options open so I can fill any spot (though I fill a DPS slot anyway with my regular party, with a set White Mage and 2 who switch tank roles now). Even if I'm not good in a particular role, there are always some that give me advice on how to develop in that role. It's what motivates me to try something outside my own comfort zone and it helps me grow as a player.

tl;dr
I vastly prefer DPS over other roles, but I'm open to playing healer or tank.




Just don't trust me with raids/trials, I hate doing those as healer/tank.

Sisters! I am TRYING to branch out by leveling Bard. I like playing songs to support the party! Pretty sure I still suck, though.

I pretty much only play a healer or support character in MMOs. If a game has no healing (some KMMOs that have come out lately) or the healing role is unsatisfactory to me for some reason (FFXIV, Wildstar to some extent), my interest in the game dies pretty fast. BF, on the other hand, loves all three roles of the trinity and is proficient at all three. Whatever he "mains" in an MMO usually boils down to either a.) what his raid or core group "needs" when the group is first forming, or b.) whichever class has the playstyle that he enjoys the most. He was a SCH in XIV and is a Demon Hunter main in WoW (he's addicted to their double jump and glide, lol).

Meanwhile, my old raid DRG only plays Protection Paladin (a tank) in WoW, and our FC leader is a tank for life and will only play MMOs with adequate sword-n-board heavy mitigation-based tanks. He fell out of XIV when the adjustments to PLD were always on the DPS end, and not the mitigation end, because the content was so oriented around it that he "didn't feel like a paladin anymore while playing". This was when we raided Savage Gordias.

I don't ever assume that people who like DPS are responsibility-shirking mouth-breathers. There's a lot of tanks and healers who do, maybe, but I'm not one of them. Sometimes it just boils down to liking the big numbers exploding on the screen, or just liking the gameplay/spell effects/gear appearances of another class more. Don't let it worry you too much, OP.

OP, why would that make you a horrible person? I get that DD classes are quite literally the bad boys of MMOs, but I find no difference in someone who chooses to main DPS over a healer or tank who chooses to main those roles. A skilled, experienced, and knowledgeable DD brings a lot to the table.

I main healer, but I enjoy playing DD classes as well. Especially DRG. I do enjoy seeing the big numbers, but it's not about that. I think it's more about showing the community that a DD can show they care as much about their group as they do getting a clear. I can't help but bring my healing mentality no matter what role I play.

Just be you. If that is a DD then be the best you can be.

Not bad, many of my friends either only olay one job or only play one job proficiently (meaning, I quietly and subtly shut down talk of "oh, I can't tank!" *I'm sorry buddy, no you can'take, not relevant content* lmao).
That being said, being proficient at different will sometimes allow you to join extra parties.

Indeed, it's just people choosing to be bad by ignoring that glorious Cleric Stance.

DPS is important regardless of what commendations tell you. If you are stuck with two shitty DPS in dungeon as tank/healer you are in for a very long dungeon run.

People generally seem to think of healers as an unsatisfying class to play as (probably because it doesn't give them a sense of "empowerment" that some people look for in games) and tanks are sparse due to also being low damage and heavily demanding that you understand some mechanics.

In that regard, I think it's only natural to like DPS more because it's really the easiest class to play by comparison.

Tanking is actually the easiest role to play in FFXIV. DPS need to make sure their rotations are spot on to maximise their output. DPS is much more stressful(and rewarding) in FFXIV then healing and tanking. People rarely look at healing metres, but they constantly make sure you are min-maxing your DPS.

You pay your subscription, you can do whatever you want. If you like to only DPS go for it, there is nothing wrong with it. One thing I do recommend players is to atleast take advantage of the class system in this game and try out new things, but since you already played the other roles and still prefer DPS, I do not see why you should feel bad or think that you dislike responsability.

I often feel bad because i don't have any viable DPS at 60, other than smn, but i haven't worked on it at all. MY FC has as many healers as we do DPS.

No you are not a horrible person OP. like others have said ffxiv allows you to be whatever you want to be. And most people pick what is fun to them.

I picked tank because in all past ff games I felt the main character(or my favorite character) the leader of the group so it just carried on to ffxiv.

Nope. It's normal for people to choose the job that they enjoy doing the most. In real life and in the game.

Highly skilled DPS is valuable in any MMO.

Nothing is wrong with you OP. I main a crafter in this game, easily 75% of my game time is spent doing crafting related activities. I play a competent a PLD, DRG and WHM (stance dancing fool).

You're not a horrible person unless you're that one guy who blames others for your mistakes. Everyone has their own preferences, nothing wrong with that. Plus if you pump out optimal damage on you chosen job; you'll be valued highly.

Personally I enjoy all roles (mainly AST/WHM, but if I don't feel like healing I'll go PLD, MNK, or BRD, [also DRK on my alt]). I like utility, and I like being able to fill roles that are needed. I'm a red mage at heart, jack of all trades :P

I prefer people to play their favorite classes because the odds of them being better with that class is substantially higher than with one that they feel "meh" about.

I did enough tanking/healing in older MMOs(FFXI, DAOC and vanilla WoW). No thanks to either these days, had enough lol

I have 2 level 60 whms, a 60 AST, and a 53 WHM(yes 3 different toons, and 1 has all 3 healer classes at 60). More power to those who like to tank, or dps, or whatever. We all have what we enjoy the most. For me it has always been healing. Not just in this MMO, but in others.

just liking DDs is fine. though trying to get some inside on tank and healer (by leveling) will eventually make you a better DD
