Why Can't We Upgrade Mount Speed?

I get the whole "World feels bigger when you move slower" illusion, but really, who cares about that? Other MMOs have implimented ways of upgrading mount speed, whether it's the whips and spurs that are equipable in WoW or the Featherswept Wings and spurs used for permanent upgrades in PWI. Even Aion lets you increase your flying speed on your wings as you level up!

I don't see why we can't have some method of upgrading such speeds. If anything it would make releasing Cloud's bike a viable option considering that the speed was all that was used as an excuse not to.

If they opt to go with HW-sized areas in 4.0+, having a land-based speed boost would certainly be useful. Heck, I wouldn't mind a faster land mount for 3.xx zones just so I could have a mix of sightseeing and getting to where I need to go in a reasonable span of time. ...and just duct tape some B52 engines to our bobos for moving around Ayis La.

Because that would be a good idea.

Let me preface by saying I'm all for increased mount speed, the faster we can move around, the better.

That being said though, the ARR zones are small enough that our current mount speed on top of being able to teleport is fast enough in my opinion. However, the flight speed for HW zones which are significantly larger definitely needs a boost, I feel that the flying speed could stand to be increased but not the ground mount speed. For the next expansion we still have to see if we're going to be able to fly and if we can fly, how big the zones are. If the zones are HW sized without flying, then we absolutely need a ground speed increase, if there is flying then I'm fine with leaving it as is.

Simply because in 14, we don't fly from one end of the world to the other like in PWI, and teleporting isn't a bish like PWI either. If SE decides to make the whole of Eorzea into one huge open world map, then I guess upgrading mount speed might be viable, otherwise, I don't see a need to.

Also, the mounts in 14 come with one speed. PWI fliers start you off at default 2? Can't remember, been too long, unless you cash shop the speedier ones.

Because that makes too much sense and somewhere someone is blaming the ps3

They don't have such thing probably because it will give unfair advantage to veteran players over newbies who has no upgrades, especially when it comes to FATE chasing / hunts. Though I actually prefer that they give a little speed bonus to ground mounts like Fenrir rather than straightforward giving it the ability to fly simply because it's one of those mounts that are harder to earn.

I don't think it's really important enough to need. We got flying mounts, those are already faster than ground mounts. That's the speed increase, we already have it.

In the case of WoW, which you brought up, they started giving speed increases every expansion. First it was 100%, then, then 200%, 300%, and finally 350% before the WoW developers finally said "ok, you guys are just using this increased mount speed to skip over all of our content. It feels like you care more about finishing our game than you care about enjoying it." So then they took away flying all together, because they wanted players to enjoy what they created. But players didn't like that. And now they're struggling to find a way to bring flying back without having it become so game breaking. Just look at their forums, it's not working out well for them.

Increased flying speed is just a lazy perk that developers add to make you feel like you're progressing faster because they know it's an MMO and know that sometimes players value finishing the game more than they value the game itself. Which is fine, but you have to understand, the faster you're allowed to finish content, the more content developers need to create. Which means developers either have to think up something grindy and time consuming, or they have to go back and slow down your content progression rate. Increased flying speed is a cute idea, but it creates more problems than it's worth.

I'm for it... as long as it's GC chocobo only. Make chocobos great again!

Speed upgrade depending on the area.
Small areas will reduce the speed and big areas will increase the speed.

This way ground mounts can be faster were the areas are big enough without running through small areas like North Shroud within 10 seconds.

OP, if you really want to travel fast, use teleport.

That is the one Mount I'd be ok with. The speed is just fine otherwise.

If you want to go faster, you could always teleport. Using a mount to go anywhere else takes only seconds.

What if they just made the zones interesting instead

You guys should probably never play FF XI... I don't know what it's like these days as I haven't played it in a good few years, but it used to be only White Mages who could teleport people and even then it was usually a lengthy run to wherever you wanted to be. Using a Chocobo all the way (i.e. without using any teleports) could take you a good 15+ minutes as well depending on where you wanted to go.

Personally I'm happy with the combination of XIV's teleporting/mount speed though. Depending on where you go, sometimes it's faster to go to another zone and walk across the border and it never seems to take that long to get anywhere really.

They can fight with us. HW introduced flight ? They learned to fly. Speed upgrades? Only for them. Hell, 4.0 introduce swimming or boats? They should learn to swim, etc...

They are the basic mounts for everyone, it makes sense that they should be the most practical ones. Others should just be vanity at the expense of speed.

I think the big selling point for mounts isn't so much use for transportation, but vanity. You don't have a slepnir because it's the fastest mount in the game. You have it because you like how it looks, or the music that it plays when mounted. Technically, racing chocobos have sprint in the form of choco dash. It would be nice if our companion birds could get something like that too. You can only use it in short bursts like sprint, but it's still faster than your average mount.

No thanks. I like a sense of speed that isn't tearing my characters arms off.
