Final Fantasy 3, 4, 5, 6, and type-0 are so good! Took a short break before 3.4 comes out to beat these games from the square-enix store. It makes me love FFXIV even more.
3 and 5 were very hard. It's great to see so many things like Cid and Krile in other final fantasies.
Idk what i'm trying to say. If you need a break from ff14 try playing any of the old final fantasy games. They're all incredible : )
Type-0 HD especially. Love it so much! Just finished my first play through.

I played the Type-0 remaster and thought it was just so... lackluster. The story made absolutely no sense and once I found out you had to play the game multiple times through to even understand it, I had checked out. It could've been so much better had they just included the whole story on the first playthrough. But to each their own.
I still have IV - The After Years and VI installed on my phone and VIII on my computer on Steam where I've been sitting at the final dungeons so I can come back and eventually beat them, but I could never bring myself to do it. I have to do that at some point. -

Type-0 is cool in a sense that it is a more 'grim' Final Fantasy but everything else is annoying.
The fact you have 14 characters is neat, but also a pain when you have to basically train them all 5 times over.
No character development because they squished 14 people into a game and have no time flesh anyone out.
The nail for me was the battle system. Kill-sight is fun, but the AI's are Dog crap...purely...one of the worst I've seen.
And to summon things, someone has to sacrifice themselves to do it. [In the CS, they summoned Odin and no one died...so what?]
Not knocking you down or anything just I had hopes for it but eh.
That said, in the last 2 years I've been delving into FF's I never played...
I literally played FF7 for the first time 2 months ago...That is one GOOD game.
The Don scene had me dying. -

The Squaresoft SNES games: Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, FF4, FF5, FF6, Secret of Mana, and Seiken Densetsu 3 are all amazing and are (in my opinion) Square's golden age of single player RPG's. In my opinion, none of the games released after the SNES (7, 8, 9, 10, 10-2, XII, and XIII 1-3) can even hold a candle to any of them although Bravely Default and Bravely Second were damn close. I still hold Chrono Trigger as my absolute favorite game and favorite RPG of all time, I believe it to be a genuine masterpiece of a game. However, I absolutely hate it's sequel Chrono Cross, I think it's a horrendous piece of garbage that should have never been made, ever. But I digress.

Type-0 teases a lot of story along the way to the end of the game. I never had trouble with characters leveling up since while playing as say only Ace the rest of the characters level up as well. Ended the game with everyone 25-30. I like that each character has a unique attitude and feel to them especially Nine.
During the game you find out about Ace's past, Rem's and Machina's but the rest of the characters I haven't found back story for. Either i've missed the npc's or I need to check the library book thing.
Things really make way more sense after googling Fabula Nova Crystallis.

Final Fantasy X will always be my favorite. It was my very first final fantasy game and i LOVED the story, followed by FF 13 series ( yeah I said it, Lightning was awesome and a great female character )

All games are overrated since the matter is always subjective. I can easily say that the Souls games, Skyrim, Fallout series, etc are all hilariously overrated, and to a decent number of people, that'd be right. I actually find X to be very overrated, but I can see why people love it, just as I can see why people love VII. For the most part, both games were players introduction to next gen RPGs.Quote:

Earthbound was amazing! It first released with a guide even if you rented it at blockbuster you got a guide with it. Years later I played it through again and discovered all the little quirks like standing in the waterfall for several minutes, everything you need to know can be discovered from talking to npc's.
FF6 was great in every way. If anyone out there loved FF6 and you haven't tried FF5 you should!

Forgot to mention. FF5 and FF3 are very difficult compared to FF6. It makes FF6 seem like a pre school game holding your hand the whole way. I really enjoyed the difficulty though and getting to play older style rpg's again.
Finally I have to say this... I hated FF4 After years and would not recommend it to anyone. The version I played though was the DS pc version I think that has a lot to do with it. I would have loved it more playing the 2D version but it's not sold on square enix store or steam. -

Because I absolutely refused to go and level up and gear up three parties of characters to tackle the final dungeon. I had a very specific team I liked to use and had absolutely no interest in playing any other. Now, if they had made it like the first sets of party splitting fights (where one really powerful party could handle all the enemies) thenit would have been fine.Quote:

I also love FF7. I know people go "oh it's so overrated" and in a sense, yeah it is, since people like to put it on a pedestal fit for a god and it's like. okay it's good but...calm down.

I`ve always thought of Final Fantasy VI as the most overrated of the bunch. It is good, as any Final Fantasy is. In a way i can understand why some would thought VII is the very best but VI...? Is completely overrated.
As for my personal favorite, nothing comes near Tactics (The Lions War in PSP) and Final Fantasy XII. Tactics, even with its localization, still has probably the best storyline of the whole franchise and gameplay wise, XII is the peak of the series offering the most diverse experience between exploration, challenge, freedom, customization, etc. XII basically gives you a whole open world map, controllable fight engagement and a combat system so superb you get satisfaction of just figuring out how to program a fight. I guess both games appeal to a more "tactician" minded player that likes to know all variables and prepare in anticipation to the more reactive gameplay style under the rule of the all mighty RNG combat rolls. -

When the game was originally announced as the spinoff game FF Versus XIII way back in circa 2006 it of course was planned to be directly part of Fabula Nova Crystallis, but after SE announced that it was being changed to become a mainstream FF title (FFXV), SE decided to shear it of it's Fabula Nova Crystallis connections and created a whole new independent mythology, ideas and setting (the last few FNC connections removed was the goddess Etro which was my understanding). Either way, FFXV no longer is part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis games and is now it's own independent mythology.Quote:

Terra is actually coming from mind control, has no memory of her past and is left alone and confused, it has nothing to do with her sex. Cloud on the other hand is just one of those kids in high school who wants to sulk, wear black and listen to Creed.
Kefka is completely insane, poisons a river killing the citizens of an entire city and even destroys the world all for the sake of just doing it and a lust for power. Seph killed one girl and cried over his poor mum, he couldn't even get the meteor to work. Kefka would kill you for sport, seph would kill you by droning on about his bad childhood and how he wants his mommy.
Regardless of characters, the secondary characters, story, plot and gameplay was all much better in vi than vii...imo.
vii was short, lacked any real depth and the end boss was a joke since you could knights of the round > mimic and done.
but again, my opinion -

I think disdain for VII is a bit like disdain for Apple products. When something is mega popular, there are always people who want to be different and shun the mainstream, even if they don't have a reason.
I can give some reasons why I think VII holds up as one of the series best.
The characters are very well developed. Every major character has an extensive backstory, with the game jumping back into the past many times to build its history. The death of Aeris/th had such a great impact because the game earned it by making us care.
She had a great personality and we had been through so much together. She helped us, we helped her, at one point we lost her and had to risk everything to get her back from Shinra in a huge dangerous mission. And then suddenly, after all we had been through, she was gone and never coming back.
It deals with timeless themes like love, life and death. It deals with topics that are still very relevant today like corrupt government and pollution (mako energy literally killing the planet). The story is backed up by an incredible emotional soundtrack, perhaps Uematsu's best work.
A common complaint from detractors is that Cloud is emo or whiney. He had reasons to feel that way after emerging from a mad scientist's lab with mako poisoning and scrambled memories, unable to determine the truth of his own past, all while his enemy has a mysterious power over him which renders him a puppet.
There's a reason why people still talk about VII and why it's getting a ridiculous mega-budget remake. It's ok to celebrate as a brilliant piece of art. -

I admit I picked up Type-0 day 1 and after playing it for like 2 hours I got very irritated, think it was partly due to realizing it was a Co-op game that had that part removed and had rely on team mates who didn't exactly get the concept of dodge as I recall lol. It's a fun game I will admit but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had friends who could control my other members like the original PSP version.
I do enjoy 7 myself but not for the story, mainly for the materia system and all the interesting combinations that you can mix in. Final attack + Phoenix and such. Though I still look forward to the remake. Concerning the argument over Kefka and Sephiroth, I gotta give it to the clown. Only one to my knowledge to actually accomplish his goal. Did recently pick up FF5 and loving it but I am also a sucker for a good job class system. :3 -

Both VI and VII are overrated, but that's my opinion and I admit I have a very, very soft spot for VII...
Y'know what I loved? The Bravely series. Enough to have both Bravely Default and Bravely Second standing at home as collector's editions. And thanks to being from Europe I now have small Pope Agnes and Terrifying Face Agnes the First in my room. But the gameplay of these games is like an advanced version of FF5, and the story is actually really good once you get through the horrible slog the route to true ending can be on BDFF. BSEL on the other hand was absolutely brilliant from the moment you got your second true team member. My god, I was so hooked, I even almost passed my sister who had like two weeks of a headstart on me.
in terms of FF, my favourite has to be FFIV. Something about that blatant Star Wars is really charming, and despite all those Disney deaths in the game they manage to have every single one of these have an impact somehow. The characters are really charming, too. And as bad as TAY was (just thinking about the True Moon sends shudders down my spine in a very bad way), when it characterised someone it characterised them really really well. I admit, my inner fanfic writer might read too much between the lines for most characters, but someone who was REALLY well done was Golbez, and the fact you can permanently lose him just drives the nail in the coffin. He's SO GOOD in terms of characterisation, and you lose out on something rather interesting between him and Kain if you do lose him in the Red Moon Revival Party part of the final dungeon.
Also FFIV and its introduction of the ATB leads to some hilarious oddities with the battle system, but all in all the game is very solid and I love it to pieces (enough to stomp through the post-game dungeon four times on the same day and beat up Zeromus UG just because. I wiped the floor with that dude).
On the other hand, screw the FFI-FFIV revival bosses in TAY and the fact they're NEEDED to progress - only for you to get destroyed by Bahamut. That's just horrible, horrible design and makes a slog of something already not enjoyable. Thanks, space flea reloaded, for this wonderful dungeon. -

Since this quickly turned into a VI vs VII debate, here is my take on the question.
Kefka never really accomplished his goal. Mostly because he never had one. He just wants everything to die cause he never got enough hugs as a kid or something. And he may have destroyed the world, but he somehow failed to kill any of the main characters. Which comes back to bite him in the ass. Also, he may have ascended to godhood, but moving statues around doesn't really take that much skill.
Sephiroth haters suffer from two major misconceptions. 1. Jenova is in control of Sephiroth. 2. Sephiroth wanted to destroy the world with meteor. I'm not going to talk much about the first one. It's simply not true. Jenova was dead when Shinra found her. Now about Sephiroth's plan. He knew all along that the lifestream would save the world from meteor. That's why he moved to where we fight him. To be engulfed in the lifestream and ascend to godhood. Considering he became a part of the lifestream and infected most of the world with a disease that turns you into black sludge, he kinda got what he wanted.
Overall I prefer VII. It's not perfect mind you, I think the combat is better in VI for example, but it isn't overrated at all.
I guess it all depends on what you find important in a game. IV had a great story but zero progression system. VI had loads of characters with different combat mechanics, but most of them had the same backstory. IX was super wierd but it had the best music. -

I bought FF7 and FF8 on the square enix store recently. They're so much fun I hope to play through them before patch 3.4
With Playstation the loading times even for 1 battle were frustrating. With the PC version it's much better. So i'm looking forward to playing them again. -

I'm the odd one out, but VIII was always my favorite. I think it had much to do with the fact I was a young teenager myself when I first played it, so all the emotional drama that turns many people off was instead a bit relatable.
Squall's moodiness is just his fear of being abandoned. You can't be let down by friends if you don't invest into them. The crew he is forced to work with slowly crack him. It can be hopeful in the sense that these people refuse to leave him in spite of himself, since he is a good person. I like that!
Otherwise, I'd put Tactics, FFI, FFVII, FFIX, FFX, and FFXIII (cuz that cast is too good for that game!).
I also don't care for VI.... Or II.
I've played all of them before X, and those two were so boring at their opening I couldn't get into them. -

I also liked that it built off the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythos, felt like that added a lot of weight to it outside of the game itself. I also really liked the combat - it's been awhile since I've played it but I can't remember having any real trouble with it. The only bit I wasn't entirely a fan of was the sudden twist, but looking back on it it would've been way more boring without it.
IX is my personal favorite FF, felt like it had everything that makes an FF great all packed in one cute package. It also has, imo, the best cast of characters - can't think of anyone in it that I disliked. Plus it's got Vivi - everyone loves Vivi.
