How come some mentors think they're everything during a Duty...

So I was doing the Vault in DF with a friend to unlock the second stage of our anima weapon. The Duty started off quite normal with the standard hello, we told both the mentor(healer) and the other person(Dragoon) to go a bit slower since I'm playing on an older laptop... Ofcourse the mentor just rushed ahead despite our warning until the first boss.:(

And here it just went downhill...
She started making us out to learn and play our classes, cursing in French (which me and my friend understood since we're Belgians) She said this: "Great now I need to play bad for some stupid kids, it sucks..." Then my friend says that she better learns her classes again, since she was just rush pulling even though we warned her not to...

Then she just kicked me out of the Duty for no reason and continued harassing and trolling my friend who just left the Duty 5 minutes after.:mad:

Unfortunately, these are the kind of people ruining the mentor reputation. "Durr, I have a semi-exclusive mark next to my name!" Look up your chat logs for their names and report them for harassment. Both of you, what your friend's got in the log might just be the icing on the cake.

We both reported the person, ofcourse we had the reply from SE that thy can't give any progress because of privacy reasons. But i was at my friends place anyway so i saw the full chat after I got kicked and it was pretty laughable. We just went on after reporting. Did the DF again and got the second phase on our anima weapons.

Now me and my friend were planning on becoming PvE mentors ourself since our FC concentrates on helping new players and generally having some fun.
We also just help random new players with Duties and such and if they are fresh coming out of the first cutscene we just show them around.

Sad to hear this.
The fact is the requirements to be a mentor are not that hard to achieve so many people should never be mentors will be accepted. (A.k.A Asshats)
Mentor or not runs should be adjusted according to the needs of the party, Thank god I main the tank role and pretty much control this decision. ( i'm only as fast as my healer)
If we wipe, I and the other party members hopefully look at what happened and learn and move on and clear the instance.

Sadly many people who become mentors are just in it for the status symbol and probably think they are on the same level as Game Master

It is true the requirements to become a mentor aren't that high at all. You just need 300 recommendations, run 1000 Dungeons, Trials and/or Raids and have a tank class, a DPS class and a healer class level 60 to become a PvE mentor.

Yet I just love to help new people, so we can try and keep the playerbase healthy since I'm not getting a lot of low lvl duties anymore if I wanted to lvl my lancer for example.
My friend usaully runs bard and I paladin ofcourse. Now even during the Void Ark we're seeing many more salty people that complain about how someone keeps the bosses away from mages and bards so they don't get hit as hard from AoEs... Now we only do Raids with our FC and LinkShell.

I experienced a lot of toxic players trash talk about my mentor crown.

Just because as a tank I didn't pull the whole dungeon.

Just because I don't back down when being treated as their personal slave.

A mentor is not your personal slave nor is he / she your lackey.

We help if it is needed but, at least I am not there to be abused.

Mentors have a right, to enjoy the game, too. And we are not paid for our help, we do it for free.

Be more grateful that there are people who want to help but don't ever dare to see this as a given.

Unfortunately your going to have 'those' people. The reason it is more common with mentor status is because some people put themselves on a high pedestal, & grow more egotistical. Also I once seen someone say on here if someone wants to become a mentor just to get the double seated mount while acting like a douche that's their right. So I guess people support this behavior hence the reason it will only get worse. I put those people on blacklist & report them hopefully they learn something, but doubtful hence my reason for not really playing much at all these days. Good luck!

However, I have seen some very good mentors, not all of them are jerks, hopefully you get to meet the good ones as well.

People that do mentor roulette just for the achieve can be cruel I guess :/
I did 2 mentor roulettes and got twice dungeons (Aery and Stone Vigil) and as I don't like dungeons decided to avoid it and just miss out on a grindy mount :(

Did Odin for 2 friends this weekend and as Odin is defo easy enough and Mentor Roulette atleast should fill the queue we went with DF... we joked about ragequitting Mentors before but we only encountered a few sprouts and oneshot it :p

It's nice to see posts like this. And yea there are quite a lot of good mentors. Like in our Linkshell alone we got about 3 mentors that are always ready to help when the others need it. Now it has been quite peacefull in DF since everyone is grinding those Yo-kai Fates again.

I don't want to become mentor just for the status. I love helping other people. The one new person me and my friend helped already became MNK while we were doing Duties with him together to level him and we were having a great time. It is fun to help new players and see them develop overtime. Let them be happy, don't just go all cruel on them like I have seem people do.

They did not want the tank to speed run/pull the whole dungeon, they got abuse for refusing to go faster.

The situation was 2 assehat players, mentor or not. Verbally insulted others and then kicked them for no good reason, both of these can be reported and should be.
To be honest the fact they are mentors means a harsher punishment should take place. You sign up for position like this because you want to help others, because when needed you will put in more effort to help someone struggling getting the idea.

Will I become a mentor soon probably, do I still help people? Yes, I take my role as tank seriously, even if i cannot explain mechanics( i'm really am not the best person at this, I of course will try but thank god for markers)
I can still control the run in a way that makes it enjoyable for newer players.

If you need an example. I Have been running POTD I asked the 2 new people if they where ok with 1 splitting up and 2 to do the floors with a fast pace( mostly me sprinting while keeping threat)
they agreed, had they not then I would have changed the run to accommodate them, yes them not me.

There always seems to be a conflict of interest between new players and veterans. Veterans have seen the content repeatedly and simply want to plow through it as fast as possible to get it over with, but new players typically want to experience everything the dungeon has to offer. This can create frustration on both sides as neither of them can have a fully enjoyable experience due to each other's conflicting goals, made worse by the fact that often times, especially by mentors, there is very little team communication going on.

I'm sorry you went through this situation, yet at the same time I feel like I understand the other side a little bit. I think it's a sad reality that many people simply don't have the patience and/or temperament to really help those who are struggling with the game, especially when their goals particularly involve "get in and get out."

I've had this done to me too during the 2.0 days. While tanking I had a healer and DPS rush off and pull adds in multiple dungeons which was fine by me. Clearly they're not morons, they knew what they were doing. By the time I caught up to them I would easily gain control of the situation. Now that I'm a overpowered handsome tank I know how those players felt and I'd prefer the fastest way. Either by pulling all the adds or walking past them. You shouldn't hinder another players play style, but adjust to it.

Why should the other 2 players go slow? Is it because of your slow laptop? I'm assuming the healer knew what they were doing and if they did get in trouble I sure the healer could handle it on their own. By the time you would of caught up and taken the aggro away or they would of ran to you if they needed help. Healers like that are the best healers because they burn down adds fast and can heal with almost 0 MP left.

The thing I don't like about this argument is that it can go the other way. Like, from my own experience so far, I always feel like I have to skip out on interesting things like lore bits or treasures located down extra paths because the rest of the party doesn't want to take that time to explore. That's hindering another play style in place for another in its own right.

They should go slower out of respect for their team members situation which may or may not be beyond their control? Same goes to the other two who wanted to be done faster, you come to a fight you're expected to be 100% out of respect to your fellow teammates. You cant come in a PUG dungeon and just half ass it no mater what situation you have on your hand. Family problems, baby crying, PC lagging, disconnecting every time, bathroom break or anything. If OP queued for A8S and said to take it slow she would of been kicked. Same thing applies to any team work event anywhere in life. If OP was out numbered we would of had another post about how 3 of the people in the group didn't want to take it slow in Palace of The Dead. Anyways, we're only getting OP's side of the story. Even if OP was running slower she would of still be able to pick up the adds and no conflict between the 2 would of occurred. Perhaps OP isn't telling us how she refused to pull or pick up the adds that the healer pulled? Which caused the outburst of the healer?

I am a mentor, as I want to help others. I am the kind of player who will take the entire time of the dungeon making sure newer players can get through the content. Outside of savage, i think I have a really good grasp on the majority of the content in this game. I try and simplify mechanics when possible, explain where mechanics can be avoided, and be supportive to other players.

What I don't like, is people trying to tell me I am wrong, and they dont have 1/4 of the level 60 classes that I have, and clearly do not have anywhere near the experience I have put into this game. You don't NEED to Limit break the tear in Chyrsalis. If the main tank on last boss of WC can turn the boss when her hair turns to blades, it can save a good number of people from dying in the raid. These are real mechanics, yet I have people tell me I am wrong and argue with me. I offer my advice, as a way for others to grow. But many players don't care to grow, or learn alternate ways of doing content other than how 1 person shown them. And they are rude about it.

I'm sorry you had a bad Mentor in your party OP. Patience is something that should be a requirement with anyone who wears a crown next to their name. If someone is on a slower computer, or has distractions, going at a slower pace, will make the duty go a lot more smoothly. I would have been fine with your pace had I been there instead.

@shape: the one talking crap is you, I just wanted to share my own story, so that people knew, that mentors can be harassed as well, because they don't rush trough the dungeon due to a careful playstyle. That's all there is to tell about it. If you have another opinion on that, feel free to keep it on yourself if you end up insulting others with that.

Yes your a mentor great, if you are getting flack for not having a fast enough pace and you are able to and the party wants it then why would you not accommodate that? I would give myself crap for that.
If you pull rank to force a slower pace for the 1 new guy then yes this is correct but you have not expanded on any of your points.

lets forget the 2 players where mentors would you think any differently, myself maybe a little but i'm still fed up of crap like this happening in game in general.
If you are getting flack have you thought maybe its also your play-style.
Also just asked a mentor can you turn off the mentor icon, guess what you can, so why did you leave it on
If i go in and leave my mentor icon on when leveling a DD job then I deserve the big target painted on my back for not playing the role at high level of play.
Yes I looked up your char you have all 60's but how many of them are your mains tank does not sound like one.

Of course Mentors are going to get harassed so do all players.
A BLM died 9 times in the final steps of faith and was told to uninstall and go kill himself, then the guy left
We did end up disbanding but the few of us also tried to help the BLM and address what issues he was having.

Anyway I have more important things to do like preparing to be a raid leader

I will make you know I did pull all the adds of the healer if I arrived at the spot... I was just telling we started to get the harassment of the mentor before we even started the first boss and then she kicked me out and started against my friend who was still in the dungeon still not doing the first boss... And I sat next to my friend in his room, so I saw the full chat.

Duty Finder has no consequences so you get people who behave like this even as mentors. Players would slow down to do the chests if the chest gave something worth opening for. Like if opening all chests in a dungeon rewarded a chunk of ESOs or something. Some people would still want to rush through though.

That story doesn't sound like a mentor problem.
That just sounds like a jerk who happens to also have been a mentor.
