Basically Japanese folklore monsters, demons,spirits, etc.
That Jibanyan you have with you is actually a cat pokemon, -dead- cat pokemon.

They're like Japanese spirits, a lot of them originating from myths and legends
like if Yo-kai Watch was made in America, Bigfoot would probably be one.


Also Squeenix owns the rights to it, and not Pokemon.
Another fun collection game is....any SMT game. Not really "for kids" though, that one.

because pokemon go is an embarrassment to the series, it's like a savage casual version of the proper pokemon games.

We call them Yokaimon in our FC.

My FC mates are now referring to Yokai as 'catching Pokemon' and 'Pokemon hunting', it really is the Walmart version :P

I personally am not offended by comic sans, although seems there's a funky hate for it on the web. Seems like it may have some footing from some designers in '99 (from a very brief and incomplete GIS).



BUT ON TOPIC - I actually think they're kinda cute. I had never heard of them before, but that goes for just about anything remotely anime related :X

Look up the history of this event's creation before you complain why Pokemon isn't a collaboration instead, I doubt FFXIV is even on Nintendo/Game freaks radar.

Personally I would have preferred a Professor Layton (hildibrand?) or Ninokuni event (both of which created by Akihiro Hino, i.e. the guy in charge of this event), but thats up to level 5

Square Enix does not have the rights to YoKai. It's Level 5. However, the CEO of Level 5 is friends with YoshiP and that is why it's a collab with YoKai instead of Pokemon.

Pretty funny though

I feel like an XIV in-game version of the Pokemon Go app in astrochronometer* directing players to locations out of the way to find rare Pokemon, participate in landmark defense like gyms using them, and some light crossover with Lords of Verminion would have been a much better event than the Yo-Kai's crossover of grinding hundreds of FATEs with nothing interesting added.

*Whatever they want to name it. Who build it? Cid, machinist's guild, a new wandering NPC who suddenly appeared in Eorzea, etc.

The games honestly have very little in the way of Pokemon resemblance.

Really, they're more like the Dragon Quest Monster series than anything else.

Reworked ideas like that being big in Japan is common for them, but not for western audiences... despite some rather blatantly reused ideas being marketed. Consumers do like products that are familiar, but take a new spin on things, which people generally won't see from the outside without experiencing it themselves. It's funny because this promotion is clearly intended for the Japanese audience, rather than any western one, but being who we are, the grand majority of us will forever fail to realize that.

Yokai are the Go-Bots of the pocket monster world.

Why is it that the monster catching genre seems to be the only one where people act like only one series can exist?

Especially ironic coming from fans of a series built on mimicking Dragon Quest.

I wouldn't go that far, I'd say that it has helped the brand be recognised more in the west, as it is much less well known over here. It could be primarily for the Japanese audience, but the choice to spread it worldwide is definitely intentional

Keep Pokemon out of XIV and XIV out of Pokemon. :D

The anime got an English dub...that's saying more than like, every Precure season ever (leave me alone).
There are tons of mon collection games, Pokemon is just THE BIG ONE. Pokemon didn't even start the genre; it's existed since the early 90s, late 80s.

HONESTLY....and this is my bias showing.... anything involving youkai I'm thankful they acknowledge even exist outside Japan. Do you know how hard it is to get good localization of things involving Japanese myth and folklore?? So this promotion: fantastic I love it please more

This. I really hate the conflation of Yokai Watch and Pokemon, the series are are only really comparable in the collecting and "Monster" aspects. Trying to say "LOL is this the new pokemon??" just puts a weird mark on a silly kinda new series.

Digimon minions would be cute. See them hatch from eggs and digivolve.
