The Silence Penalty

1 of the new changes coming to WoW in the legion pre patch is the silence penalty basically if a player is reported multiple times for spam or abuse will receive an account wide silence penalty that limits the way players can chat with other players

Could square introduce a similar system to FFXIV if an rmt bot spaming tells or standing next to the marketboard spaming in /say is reported multiple times they are then restricted and cannot talk to any player untill investigated by square it could be a solution to the problem of rmt what do you think? I'm all for it myself. Of course there may be the odd set of trolls who will report just for the laughs but I would assume if GMs checked it out and see the player never did anything worth reporting the people reporting would be in trouble then.

The RMT people will just create a new account and spam players again.

I am onboard with anything that can help stop or reduce spam from these people though. It is not a bad idea.

They did say on the Wow post that they would investigate before handing out the Silence Penalty.

I believe they said it would be account wide silence. but the RMT's will keep going regardless.

id be ok either way restrict the player untill a gm has investigated looked at logs ect if a player is cleared then lift the penalty but they maybe too late if they investigated 1st the account maybe deleted by the rmt's

I believe there was something similar already planned for ffxiv in an upcoming patch. I'm not sure where the info on it was posted however so I have no source to provide, just my shoddy memory. *hands out grain of salt packets*

Yoshi-p already stated in the E3 live letter that (not account wide) that they working on system that if person gets reported enough times they will get sent to GM jail automatically.

I like the idea of community dictated moderation. My only concern is that some might use it as a way of abusing others. For example, someone could get their linkshell to constantly report someone they just don't like.
If they can prevent that kind of abuse, then I'm all for it.

Or, even better, if they had a "silence" voting option in the vote kick window. There are some good players that shouldn't be on chat. Instead of kicking them, let's just keep the volume down.

It is my understanding that something like this is in the works. I can't remember the article, but I seem to remember SE announcing a planned Report-As-RMT option on the right-click menu. If enough individuals use that option, the offending individual is banned or silenced (can't remember what was stated) until they can be investigated.

The problem is that this is just a placebo. It may make players feel better, but RMT are ridiculously good at churning out new bots. SE already bans thousands of accounts per week for being RMT (just check out their biweekly "Actions taken against RMT" reports on the Lodestone), and most likely the vast majority of them are RMT bots.

Anyway, we should get our click-to-silence option sooner than later, but I'd be surprised if it makes much of a difference. And, hopefully, large FCs won't use it as a tool to punish legit players who happen to offend one of their members. ("All right, everyone, Some Body was rude to Freshie Fresh in Ifrit Hard - everyone report him as RMT. Let's get his ass banned!")

Good idea the silence penalty could also be abused by the toxic hunt community probably why square hasn't introduced a system like the silence penalty they need to find a way to stop players abusing it just because they dont like another player

I would hope they still keep watch over it and if abuse is happening, a much worse penalty befalls the people involved.

I've already said something similar to this before (I'm sure allot of people have.)

Tells to friends (both sides have to be friend-ed,) linkshells, Free company chat, and inside instances (Raids, trials, guildheists, and dungeons) should not be affected by this silence.

This silence should only affect shouting, yelling, saying and telling non-friends, in the open world. It should be used for RMT or other out of game advertisements, and should be bannable if the report is falsified.

Maybe first they can work out a quick effective efficient way of actually reporting the bots/messages, instead of having to slog through the current system.

After that you can start worrying about what punishments to dole out to stem the tide.

SWTOR has a "Squelch" system. Basically if someone is spamming or posting rmt ads in chat you can click on their name and "Report" then a window pops up and you specify whether it's spam or RMT then that player gets put into a temporary squelch list for your account. If enough people report the offender then their chat privileges are revoked until their account is reviewed by someone.

How this game has made it this long without a right-click "report" function is beyond me, but the squelch system is also really nice, because then you don't fill up your blacklist with gibberish names that are going to be deleted in a week.

Could they implement that on the forums?

I wouldn't mind seeing this implemented either, but ONLY if they take the time to actually investigate the logs before they dole out the sentence. From my few years of experience with this game, the community is no where near as bad as WoW's is (or maybe that's only because I'm on a mid-population server?), but there are still plenty of trolls that would report people just for giggles and knowing that they would have the chance to ruin someone's day.

I'd be happy to have a simple mute button in instances. It doesn't need to be server- or account-wide, it doesn't even need to be persistent. It can clear as soon as I'm out of the instance. I just don't want to see your overly-complicated macros you have for every skill.

I like this idea. It would only be given to those who deserved it since a GM would have to issue it.

Not if it is an automated thing.

Looking at the "sent to GM jail" bit seems to me like it puts it at the front of the GM's priority for easy investigation.

They could easily look at the log, see the time stamps, and decide from there.

Wow I never heard of this coming, that would be an excellent idea, but the dev team can't even expand the blacklist list, so idk....

The system they're implementing will need to not be fully automated and will require GMs babysitting the reports, since I've read several stories of GMs warning people for abusive language, when the only players they cursed at were gold sellers. This implies the gold sellers actually report people for harassment lol...

Poor, poor MrHappy and Mizzteq. That's going to be a rough system for them day one.

Seems pretty pointless, the reports still need to be investigated by a GM and at that point if they broke any rules they'd probably be temp banned anyway with a regular report, and if they didn't break any rules then the people who got their precious feelings hurt just wasted a GMs time that could've been better spent on helping people.

What SE should do is just fix the blacklist system we already have so that it still works in dungeons, is account wide and works cross-server that way people can fix their own problems and not waste a GMs time just because someone says something they don't like.

I don't think silencing the spammers will make any difference if banning thousands of accounts every few months has yet to make any impact. What really needs to happen is the money making bots getting eradicated and every item they put for sale being taken down. Just look at the Lodestone for new guilds being founded, for Hydaelyn's sake! If a normal player can see gibberish guilds being founded and filled by black mages and bards with equally gibberish names, surely a GM can as well.

A solution for this was posted many times already though. If you can only report people that send tells to you and not just random people, a person that gets reported would have to be sending tells to many people, and one that does that is most likely worth a "silence" anyhow...
And yes, GMs can still quickly check those that have been reported, shouldn't take more than one look to see what the tells that have been reported said.

Harassment is already a bannable offence, so not many people are going to directly send their harassment to the GM team. Do you really think anyone is going to convince a whole group of LS or FC members to all give up their accounts and access to the game just in order to attack someone who would themselves only get temporarily silenced by it? The victim gets a silence until the GMs check the reports, at which point they're un-silenced while everyone who reported them is banned. I just don't see that happening much.

They only keep churning out spam bots because the bots are profitable to them. As soon as they're not, they'll quit replacing them. The current system is that a spam bot can spend weeks sending out thousands upon thousands of ads before they're finally banned. That's long enough to bring in some sales, so replacing the spam bot is just the cost of advertising.

With this system in place, however, as soon as the bot starts sending out its first few tells, people start reporting it and it's silenced within a few minutes (possibly faster if it's using /say), with only a few messages having gone out. They're not likely to bring in any sales in just those first few messages.

As soon as it costs more to set up a new spam bot account than the amount that account can add to their sales, they're going to stop doing it. (The RMT itself would still continue, but the spam advertising it wouldn't.)

I know search has it's uses but those who wish to have privacy should be allowed it without having to resort to restricting all messages and other in game activities (such as trade) via the /busy setting.

At this point, I'm willing to even take a half-assed attempt at handling these jerks. Even if it is something that stops it for a week, and they figure out a way around it. I don't care. I would just like to see SOME kind of effort to handle them. SE wants to encourage player interaction, do they not? I feel the RMT is their bane when it comes to that.

Grrr! I know they will post a list of banned accounts that shows they are, and I know I'm frustrated. I know this problem is like trying to eat an elephant. But I think I want to see more preventative measures rather than reactionary ones. You can't attack a fuel source that is unlimited in supply. They need to find the heart, and shove a dagger right though it.

Imagine the GM jail full of RMT bots.

It worked tremendously and it is so easy to implement.

I'd love to see an option where you can receive tells only from those on your friend list, and possibly an option to turn off friend requests (to prevent bots from sending them).

Or just remove the "Send Tell" option from Player Search > Right Click. Their job becomes much more difficult if they have to type names or use other methods. The reason they're so "efficient" is because they use tools to search/spam tells, making it harder to automate makes it harder for them to work.
