In the live interview, Yoshi-P Said that active wyverns as pets would have to be balanced against the strength of the Dragoon as a job.
However, it is already something he said that he would like battle ready mounts to aid in battle.
So instead of balancing Wyvern's against the Dragoon's powers, how about offering Wyverns as an optional, battle-ready mount for Dragoon players to have?
Considering in the live interview they displayed rough images of riding Drakes and Airman this doesn't seem to be a stretch, and it would make both those who would prefer powerful Dragoons and those who want the companionship of a pet Wyvern happy.
Thoughts? Opinions?

It'd be a compromise that adds to the depth of the game while filling demands of both sides of the debate. Having a Wyvern pet out wouldn't harm the player's output any more than having a chocobo out and fighting with you, and would be balanced on the same mechanics.
From the player reactions, I don't see Dragoon getting Wyvern, and that doesn't bother me. But with Yoshi-p already in mind to make mounts capable to aid in battle, I don't see why this opportunity can't be capitalized upon to keep the base that wants to include Wyverns as part of their Dragoon's adventure.

I agree with the first point, very highly disagree with the second.
The traditional archetypes for FF actually are part of what defines it as a whole. White Mage has never been anything but a healer. Black Mage has never been anything but a Magical DD.
The line only blurs on jobs that would be difficult to balance in an MMO enviroment, such as Red Mage, the Jack of All trades, and it's notoriously difficult role finding and balancing throughout FFXI's history. (And yet, FFXI developers just made a hard stance stating that no job but WHM will be receiving Cure V as cast-able white magic.) And job mechanics that would make no sense at all such as Samurai's "Gil Toss".
Every other deviation of the series has pretty much been the players pulling the job themselves in an unforeseen direction, in the case of FFXI, or characters that really had no set 'role' as with some of the less job centric console Final Fantasies. All the job system iterations? They've been fairly spot on with their archtypes, they just vary depending on the world they're in. -

The Pro Wyvern crowd really are pushing for the wrong solution to this. IMO. Dragoon should be a Dragon Knight, as previously described by many. It's Iconic Image is sans Wyvern.
The idea of having a Wyvern fighting along your side to aid you, shouldn't be any different than those who remember the days of Bartz (Butz) and Boco. If you want it to be your companion, then let it actually act like a companion, instead of your shadow. It's a much more in depth system that would be allowed if it were tied to Dragoon as a job.

The pro-Wyvern crowd doesn't seem to realize that they're taking a choice away from the majority of the player-base in tiring Wyvern into Dragoon's mechanics. While their aesthetic desires for a pet can be met through other means, and likely to greater benefit to both parties. -

Do we really need to turn this game into MountCraft? I don't even like the Magitek armor idea. How's that supposed to fit in with the chocobo cultivating system, anyway?
If the Dragoon has to have a wyvern of some kind, I'd like it to only appear during certain attacks, like this, or perhaps it could follow the Dragoon but it'd have to be only a part of the Dragoon's animations and not a separate NPC.
Also, how about we all learn to use the apostrophe correctly? It is used when you want to form a possessive case (The dog's toy) or in certain contractions (don't), not when you want to create a plural (The dogs played with their toys). Also note the difference between it's (it is) and its (the possessive case of "it"). This wasn't an issue on the Internets five years ago, but it's spreading like the bubonic plague. Please, everyone, try to avoid this simple mistake. Thank you. -

If the wyvern is not going the be a part of the regular class abilities then I would just like to be able to summon it for battle purposes (much like the idea that's out there for battle chocobos).Quote:

Maybe not as a mount but as a compagnon like the Chocobo will be lately, and Dragoon could choose to fight with either a wyvern or a chocobo (but not both at the same time).

Hmm good idea actually, it could be like our Wyvern from FFXI has grown up now and become a pet that we fly around on. Infact the more I think of this idea and the Wyvern not effecting the Dragoon in any way the more I like it. AND THE MORE I THINK OF DRAGOON FLYING ON A GIANT Wyvern Instead of a small shit one OMFG HELL YEA!

Let's use an example. Instead of saying, using greens for the use of raising chocobos, you use parts and oils to tune your armor, or meats to give you're wyvern some healthy protein.
Wyvern and Chocobo are easy for breeding because its the same biological process. For Armors, you could say, exchange blueprints.
If I may go as far as to anticipate an argument you might have about the use of monster mounts. Yoshis' statment about monster pets did say it was something that would likely be limited and rare to those who are playing through the Seventh Umbra Era storyline. So it will likely NOT become the zoo you speak of.
This's doubly covered considering with what it looks like with the Chocobo mounts, they seem to take up space in the party. I mean its fine if you want to go against ideas of having a side companion. But speaking logically it is likely the best way to go about keeping both casual/lowman groups and dedicated parties more or less on the level.
And... I think that covers every possible misuse of the apostrophe. Just making a point: You can't win the grammar fight, give up on it.
That all said. The Golden Axe approach to Wyvern showing up just for attack moves could be a good alternative. I'm not against it. But it's one of many solutions the developer can consider.
